I was sent to American Prize Ring to react to their videos.
They claim to fight according to the London Prize Ring rules, so I'm in!

I thought the fight was really good. I'm sure it will take awhile until people relearn how to optimize the rule set. I definitely would like to see the evolution of grappling for this.
@EnglishMartialArts

Yes, there are definitely things that would help, a flat surface with well marked boundaries and grass would make a big difference to the grappling I suspect.
@GallowglassAxe
@GallowglassAxe 2 жыл бұрын
@@EnglishMartialArts Oh I was referring to the actual grappling techniques. Like you said the takedowns he was doing was fine for MMA or ground fighting but not as effective for London Prize fighting.
@EnglishMartialArts
@EnglishMartialArts 2 жыл бұрын
@@GallowglassAxe Ah, gotcha. The throws in themselves would need very little adjustment to make them effective, almost more a change of mindset than much of technique.

@@EnglishMartialArts Would a marked boundary really make a diference? AFAIK, most "rings" in the bare-knuckle days were simply rings of spectators. It wasn't possible to move past them (and potentially dangerous if the spectators were unsporting...) But a marked ring means little. Would the fight stop if someone stepped outside the ring? That would just mean another way to start another round. A solid ring would change the fight, similar to a cage match.

The London Prize Ring rules state "That the ring shall be made on turf, and shall be four-and-twenty feet square, formed of eight stakes and ropes, the latter extending in double lines, the uppermost line being four feet from the ground, and the lower two feet from the ground. That in the centre of the ring a mark be formed, to be termed a scratch; and that at two opposite corners, as may be selected, spaces be enclosed by other marks sufficiently large for the reception of the seconds and bottle-holders, to be entitled “the corners.” Some fights undoubtedly simply had a ring of people, but that certainly wasn't the norm for championship fights.

We fought with similar rules on the farm growing up, my cousins and i had a lot of fun beating eachother up with that ruleset because we were a bunch of farm boys (and the girls joined in to, my older sister hits like a brick and fights Muay Thai these days) who when bored if we weren't getting in trouble in town were boxing and wrestling

I like the concept, though I feel this particular bout didn't make the best use of the ruleset. As you have said, the throws employed didn't do much besides stop the round - a proper throw could have ended the fight. Some of the old bare-knuckle manuals advocated DROPPING on your opponent as you threw him, which would certainly have been devastating. What we saw here were more "tumbles" than throws. This seemed to be a combination of a grappler who didn't know how to use the rules to his advantage, and a striker who couldn't stay clear sufficiently to use his own strengths. I'm sure both would have learned from this though. I'll be interested to check out the other fights from this channel.

Better than an agreed round limit, they should have an agreed time limit. The current ruleset allows the better grappler to simply trip his opponent 5 times and win, whereas a 15, 20, or 30 minute fight would allow an undetermined number of rounds and much more wearing down, that I reckon would better resemble the old fights under London Prize Ring rules. I don't think multi-hour matches are feasible in this day and age, but more time would allow modern fights to resemble the old school more closely in spirit, at least.

Great video! Thanks for following up on my suggestion! This video you chose to feature was one of my favorite ones, in terms of the grappling, but I think the first full fight video is also one of my favorites because of the striking and use of purring/shin kicking: kzbin.info/www/bejne/boK0qqF6rsxoqJI I've recently watched all the most recent fights on APR, sure looks promising for the rebirth of the London Prize ruleset. They've finally got a ring set up as well. Hoping to see more bare knuckle fights as well as some old school stances and movements as well. I practice a combination of drills found here on your channel, and on Tom's, at the gym, but I can only do so much with bag drills. Watching these fights really helps as well, and puts into perspective the difference between the London Prize rules and what we know as boxing and grappling today, even if they aren't quite following the ruleset in entirety.

I don't like to kill the mood but I think you have to know. I too was enthutiastic about them, until I noticed the tattoos of some of the fighters and founders. The APR was founded by dudes belonging to Operation Werewolf, a neo-pagan and neo-volkisch movement. Some of these tattoos are clearly linked to national socialist and neo-pagan occultism. Personally it's a f-ing big no-no for me. All mention about this was removed from the original vidéos. Wish politics would stay away from pugilism, but it's is saddenly not the case. Thought it would be better to inform you.
