Rest In Peace to my old horn. I can’t believe I used to play on that now that I’m looking back at it. Nonetheless, i love what I’m playing on now and that’s thanks to you Trent. Cheers!

I got my first trumpet back in 1976 at a pawn store. It was an old beat-up old trumpet. I was stuck in the last sheet of beginners band for 3/4 of the year when my music teacher came and looked at my trumpet. She told me that old instruments back then were made to be played in Old orchestras. She said that old instruments were tuned slightly different than all other instruments and that's why they stick out. They don't tune. I went to a couple music stores and they confirmed this back in 1976 in Salt Lake City Utah. I've talked to many instrument shops today and nobody has ever heard about this. Within 2 weeks of swapping in that olds trumpet, I want the first sheet, then got brought the last sheet of the interment immediate Ban, two weeks later I ended up in the advanced band and became first seat. They all hated me at that point, the other trumpeters that is that were all older than me. I could see maybe my teacher being wrong, but all the instrument shops and the fact that I want from last seat of the worst band the first seating their best???

What a shame to see that there are brands that don't play well. Just stealing money from the customers.

My most 'amazing' equipment experience was when a student brought in his new trumpet purchased in a hardware store (1976). It worked for two days and then the valves froze. It took them out to check and discovered ALL the valve ports were very jagged around the edges. The inner valve surfaces were all shredded. It never worked again. Made in India, I believe. I also had some major brand student trumpets in a section that third line G was the line of doom. If we tuned that G, all below was ok. For G and above we had to tune the concert Bb. I tuned according to where their part registers lay.

Coming out of collectors’ circle, there is a motto about buying online - “buy the seller”, meaning that there is always a chance to buy anything that is bad, but the key point is finding a reputable seller so that the transaction is always well taken of. I guess buying new is the same - find a seller who knows what he/she is doing, with good customer service just in case.

I can tell you this is true about online horns, I have a Bach that plays and sounds great but was a display model. I guess it was played tons and never bought because I had to get the second valve rebuilt almost immediately. Be careful!

Years ago I bought a 1950s Olds Ambassador (LA) ~ I loved it so much I worked up the Olds "food chain." Today the star of my Olds collection is a 1939 Olds French model, followed by a 57 Recording & 41 Super all are wonderful. The lacquer on all but the Recording is toast. They're not super "pretty" BUT their build quality & sound is golden.

Turn it into a lamp???? When I first heard you play it, I thought that was what you were playing. If you do make successful repairs to this, please make a video outlining everything you had to do this "trumpet" as well as what the bill would be for these repairs. Turn it into a lamp????

@chuckb95955 жыл бұрын
Big fan of yours but this video confuses me. Basically and correct me if I'm wrong, but this video is about not buying horns like this and this on in particular. But then you won't give the brand, thus preventing people from "not buying this horn" and saving them a lot of time, money and possibly many hassles. What gives?
@austincustom5 жыл бұрын
I choose not to name the brand in case they try to come at me legally. The bigger point is to buy from a reputable shop and you will never have to worry about this. I know of another shop who called out a brand and lost a $16 million dollar lawsuit.
@johnwhitaker72154 жыл бұрын
I respect Trent for not naming the brand due to potential legal issues. However, if you are curious as to the brand, all you have to do is go to eBay and search “Monette trumpet”. Somehow, this company had manipulated the eBay search results to basically list their horns as seemingly as good as Monette for a fraction of the price. The horn he played was the first result when I searched on eBay using that phrase. It’s a shame...
