Woohoo, 1st ever first post! Ok, just so you know. CTRL + X is a valid console command in Linux. Try opening Nano, and make no changes to a file. CTRL + X = Exit. Not everything is windows, especially the commands used in the matrix terminals

For those laughing at Neo for trying to quit using ctrl-x, before it was used for cut / copy it was quite common to exit command line / terminal programs using ctrl-x. Just like the one he's trying to exit.

Yeah, while it's not impossible that hypothetically talented hacker Neo might be doing dumb stuff - laughing and assuming he doesn't know how to quit something in an interface no one in that room has ever used, WHILE quoting one of the main commands we try to hammer into idiots (and beginners) who use the world's most common OS... Pretty baseless assumption lol. And there's a decent chance that the Wachowskis are vaguely familiar with "hacking" and specifically wrote intelligent keyboard shortcuts into the script themselves. I mean, it's not like they wrote the battery thing into the original script - they're not as dumb as some details might lead people to believe.

40:30 the Mikey commercial says "Give it to Mikey, he won't eat it, he hates everything". Everyone quotes it as "Give it to Mikey, he'll eat anything" which obviously doesn't make sense for a commercial trying to prove how good something is if the kid will just eat anything. It is the most misquoted line in history. The impressive writing is that Tank is misquoting a misquote because he hasn't been in the matrix. It's a double deep cut.

As for the agents knowing everything at all times: think of Matrix as operating system. Agents could be like antivirus program - it still needs to search through the computer to find malicious programs. And then if you have level 0 rootkits you're able to hide from the antivirus.

I would add that if you look at any machine learning stuff then you soon learn, that there's a "black box" of a mess happening beneath it all after input and before output and nobody can track whats going on in there.

I mean, they do probably know where people are who are using their hardware (mostly the pods like Neo's), but that probably has to do with the fact that those people are on first-party hardware and software with built-in reporting - some of the matrix hardware in the ships was probably salvaged from pods, but it's less than 100% machine-controlled.

29:20 "She just catfished him" No, she told him the exact truth ... but presented it in a way that he needed to comprehend (during that specific time) in order to bring about everything else. She told Neo that he isn't The One (he isn't at that moment) and that he is "waiting for something [...] your next life maybe". She also referenced the Latin above the door and translated it to "know thyself" and added "no one can tell you you're The One, you just know it". The Oracle then tells Neo he will choose between saving his own life or saving Morpheus' life. During the attack on the Nebuchadnezzar, Neo (inside The Matrix) is shot and his heart stops, but he had managed to save Morpheus. Neo is now dead and Morpheus is alive, exactly as The Oracle said! He then realises that Morpheus was correct in the belief that he is The One ("know thyself") and that he CAN manipulate The Matrix. This means he doesn't have to die in the real world from injuries incurred inside The Matrix. He rejects every control measure The Matrix has imposed on him and his learning. He revives himself inside The Matrix (subsequently nullifying his IRL death) and displays that he has now become The One by seeing The Matrix for exactly what it is - just code. Now you understand the point of The Oracle's existence. As pointed out in this video, she is the balance against The Architect. She says what is needed to facilitate the ongoing equilibrium but she doesn't lie.

I really love that everything that appears as a plot hole or inconsistency in this movie (though they're mostly very minor, other than the hokey love bit) is explained (though in a way that respects a viewers ability to connect dots and draw conclusions) by the Merovingian and the Architect in the Matrix Reloaded. I think most people fail to make the connections with the Merovingian's scene about cause and effect (and big but subtle worldbuilding with the food-delivered programs), and as well as not taking the revelations from the Architect to their complete conclusions. The great thing about these movies, including the sequels, is how many different layers there are to digest, each one kinda giving you an 'Aha!' moment once you finish.

CTRL+X is a linux bash (it's like terminal on Mac or command prompt on Windows) command for closing files opened in the bash. So NEO was just trying to close the file/ application when he saw the message. Cant believe that a Tech channel doesn't know about Terminals in other OSes. These guys would be feeling sooo stupid now for making such silly comment and laughing at NEO for doing CTRL+X

The Merovingian, his people and Seraph are relics from the second version of the Matrix. It was a mythological one, so The Merovingian was basically The Devil (he tempts and makes deals), he is the ruler of (criminal) Underworld and his wife is Persephone. And his club is called The Hel. Man who Persephone kills with silver bullet is called Abel and she tells Cain to tell about it to her husband. It is confirmed that The Merovingian was an OS for second beta Matrix.

I think that the tracking plot hole is answerable. The resistance members' bodies in the real world are unplugged from the matrix, they enter the matrix through some sort of remote hack aboard the resistance ships so they are unknown and uncontrolled entities in the system. The system can't track them so the agents have to employ less effective tracking methods like the eyes of the people who are still plugged into the matrix. On your discussions around Smith's character, I remember reading somewhere that that Smith is Neo's equal and they're different sides of the same coin, I'm not sure if that's in the movie or it was someone's deeper analysis that I found. I think the architect talks about Neo as part of an equation that needed to be balanced. If you listen to the architects full monologue it tells you a lot about why the matrix is the way it is and why some characters are there. The first time I saw the monologue I thought it was over intellectual nonsense but every time I've listened to it afterwards it has made more sense, kzbin.info/www/bejne/mXm9nWWklr1kjs0.

Neo is the stapler guy from office space, he just snapped and did sifi. also Dark city (1998), late 90's seems to be rebelling from office life. but then we also have ghost in the shell and William Gibson then Jean Baudrillard. just a film from it's time. the story is they showed 'ghost in a shell' as the pitch for the film. both the matrix and ghost in a shell come from William Gibson's book's and then a vainer of Jean Baudrillard (who did a open letter saying they missed the point of the simulacra, we are already there) and interestingly William Gibson also says we are post cyber punk, we carry computers in are pockets and use augmented reality daily. cyber punk happened it was corporate but boring. any way the fashion in the film is kind of out of his books and kind of out of the 90's.

Ok, I'm late to the party but I've had to discuss and analyse this movie since 1999, so am I really? At 44:15 Riley touches on the point that Neo just goes along with it, until he's the one and he kicks ass. I mean, he does spearhead the lobby scene and saving morpheus, so he does actually start to take some agency there. The point you guys were making though, was that keanu reeves' acting makes him appear as an empty vessel, like neo in the film. I think it's actually more that the movie was badly written; or, rather that the wachowskis weren't able to get their ideas down on paper coherently - which was another point y'all made earlier on - because Jupiter Ascending has the same problem. Mila Kunis is dragged along by events - she almost marries her son just coz they said she had to...? - until right at the end where, suddenly, she kicks Eddy Redmaine's ass!? Jupiter Ascending was obviously worse because the only other time the main character took some agency over their own life resulted in... bees? She got to wave some bees around, I think? Maybe she stepped up somewhere else? I can't remember... Sense8 was freakin' amazing though!

About the resistance, and how it takes away from them that they are purposefully there to help with the machines achieving a goal. The matrix is about control, conformity and being in a box that you aren't even aware of. It's about social system, and the media, and your being told a lie. The resistance is in a way "controlled opposition", let them fight about what they think is important so long as it still lets us do what we want to do. This is just an extension of some of the core thesis of the movie.

I felt that Thomas A. Anderson was too generic of a name, other than that, pretty good

I feel like the Will Smith thing wouldn't have completely ruined the movie but it would definitely have taken more of a Hancock feel.

"Plot hole!" You keep using that word. I don't think it means what you think it means.

Watch a KZbin video with a theory that Agent Smith is The One. Makes a lot of sense. I wrote this before he brings it up in the video.

Hey guys, please don't give incorrect run-times! You said that The Matrix is two and a half hours, it isn't! You had me reaching for my Blu-ray to check. Its 2 hours and 16 mins (an average persons watch-time would be 2 hours 9 mins - without the end credits). I have spent the last 20 mins searching the web to see if you had a newer 'extended' release with deleted scenes reinserted or something. Some of us are movie buffs and would pay good money for a different 'extended' version. You don't have to give exact mins and seconds in your review(s), but please don't add 10% to a films run-time. Thanks!

This is a really important and valid comment that I agree with an have learned from! However, if you Google "how long is the matrix" you will get an answer of "2h 30m".

@@TheyreJustMovies I'm curious, what does Alexa and/or Siri say? Also and by extension; Is Google actually part of the Matrix, is that why its lying? I just wish we could ask; "Mister, Ann-der-sen"? Glad you got that reference into your review! LOL! And as all the reviewers watched the film, you would think maybe one of them would have noticed the run-time? Still, n'er mind, I enjoyed watching you all debate it, and it was fun! What more can you ask for from a film review? Maybe no need to rush so much with reviews for the Matrix 2 and 3 films? They are not a patch on the first. The Matrix 4 however... Thanks for taking the time/trouble...
