"Indiana Jones doesn't have an arc in this movie" Why the hell else do you think he's searching for one?
@robertborland5083
@robertborland5083 3 жыл бұрын
1.) This is the best comment. Thank you. 2.) The issue with attacking the Indiana Jones because the protagonist does not have a character arc is a bit odd. The movies were inspired by pulp "two-fisted tales" that were published over a long period. In order to make sense to new readers who may start reading from a story written later, they often had protagonists that have no character development. (A good example of this from a different genre is Sherlock Holmes. Sherlock and Watson are static characters their stories but the story happens when they change the characters and setting around them.) Indiana Jones follows this genre's trope.
@Googaliemoogalie

@@robertborland5083 yea I agree that all protagonists don't need a character arc. But I disagree with stories that set one up and not give them one like Indiana Jones. The way it could have worked out for Indiana Jones to have what's called a flat character arc was possibly upgrade Marion from "damsel in distress" to the deuteragonist. She was introduced as a character that was important yet could be independent to the story (she had the medallion and seemed strong). She could have worked against the Nazis AND Indy and ended up on indys side at the end. She would have had the positive character arc and Indie would have been the same character we got. And on your point about Sherlock Holmes, Watson is the deuteragonist. He also has an arc, one of trust.

This is from the big bang theory: Indiana Jones serves no role in this movie. Completely remove him and everything would have happened the same way; the nazi's would have opened the arc, all died and then the U.S would get the arc and store it in the warehouse. I think this makes the movie hilarious and I wish they would have mentioned it.

Well Riley is very heavily influenced by others' opinions, you can tell because he never actually comes into these podcasts without watching "video essays" to spoonfeed him unoriginal talking points, so it makes sense that, whereas Linus' nostalgia blinds him from the problems of the film, Riley feels compelled to point them out for some social brownie points because he folds to societal pressure much more easily than the other two co-hosts, and if you question him he throws "I have a psychology degree" at you only half-jokingly

I have a sneaking suspicion that given how well these people know each other.. the opportunity to f with Linus in that you know there's absolutely no way that I was going to be less tainted let's say.. you want to have a fun juxtaposition the review of aliens.. I really did think that this was going to be the crew that actually broke that movie apart for the garbage it was.. but you know what, I'm still searching for an actual proper breakdown of that movie.. and it really is a I think there's a really good overall level to this series this podcast where you can really see how much nostalgia influences even when they're trying in Earnest to be objective.. and in some cases it's not even that the movie is the point of nostalgia rather than the themes etc these certain things, and so you're coming at it already on a on a playful adversarial level.. which is a really common theme and I really do appreciate out of the series, because it actually does bring up things.. But it's really hard on the other end of it when people are bringing up Star wars like it can do no wrong LOL versus this movie which is an actual good movie LOL.. and I'm not saying the first star was a bad movie it actually was a good movie it wasn't nearly as good as this like not even close.. from dialogue storytelling to like all of the things that actually make you know movie.. and fair appraisal of the dated fight scene and stylization where it's due.. this is so much better than Star wars.. and I would say objectively actually has action sequences that don't rely entirely on the effects work actually do rely on their construction from a filmmaking perspective and in general just the way Spielberg can Make scenes coherent that are usually not especially for the time.. including some actually good gun fights that may not be you know modern day tactical but I still think actually do hold up.. they're not common.. but like I was saying in another comment about the problems with serialization for the series I think when the situation stop being the primary focus you started to lose a little bit of that but in this particular film.. I think it's a master class of doing that. I'm terrified to watch the Star wars episodes I almost don't want to just send the general like vibes that I've gotten from usual hyper brutal Riley on things, and how he talks about Star wars that seems like this schism in in reality.. and that's nostalgic for you, it doesn't have to be like you know Nintendo fan level or Boomer shooter level gorgeous video game in general culture level of desperate attempts at regaining the happy years of their childhood when things were safe.. it's weird how it works in and I think I think as a whole this is good at that but it also unfortunately is good at that in a third party over seeable way from the audience looking at it and you have to be wanting to look for it.. at the same time I wouldn't be surprised if they also know it, it just never comes up at the time and that's the problem with these things.. at the same time though this is actually really comprehensive this one is definitely going to be brutal to get all the way through it seems from where it's gone so far.. but more often than not, some of the best objective breakdowns and proper thoroughly realized tangents I've ever seen in a entertainment or culture analysis series.. I really wish I knew what the series was when they were always advertising it, like I could never really comprehend that you know like I would want to watch like actively.. I never really got the impression of what it was and I feel like that's actually now that I have probably really hard to put into words LOL, it's almost like the name is a cop out the earliest the new name.. I really hope they keep continuing this on like private channel or something like that cuz honestly I'm very much a big fan, the only downside so far is that you have a pretty large buy-in price that you have to have seen the movie or have no intention of seeing the movie.. fortunately seems like they're picking a lot of movies that people have seen.. and yeah I'm a fan just just kind of wish that the trolling Linus episode wasn't raiders of the Lost ark LOL.. but we'll see how it goes cuz I've seen stuff flip around or or go left in the discussion before and and almost always at least it thought out or flushed out and I like that except for the aliens episode God that was annoying but you know that's the way an aliens episode always goes it seems.. I don't understand the obsession with James Cameron outside of nostalgia and for people that come into it later I just don't get it especially early James Cameron.. I'm not saying there's not good James Cameron the abyssism brilliant movie.. but yeah the the obsession and the reverence I don't get it. Especially when you contrast it to alien which was such a brilliant just near perfect portrayal of something completely different than aliens and as a feature like in a good way.. it's just kind of amazing how many free passes it gets and the mild rude goldbergian attempts sometimes to make the free passes.. and it's almost like they're just granted you know freely at the start and I'm just like what the fuck guys..? Where was the where was the crew from last episode? so maybe I shouldn't watch the Star wars episode at all or the Star wars episodes honestly I'm thinking that might be the best idea LOL cuz so far it's just those particular ones you know for all the rest God really good especially the South Park one which was the first one I watched because not knowing anything about how this show was supposed to work or what it was doing.. I can still almost always put on in the background people talking about South Park.. and I'm really glad I did because that was just a genuinely good discussion, kind of wish it had been on one of the later seasons of South Park specifically instead of the early movie because if the directions they went with it didn't always have to go back to a 1999 movie about cussing and moral panic.. and yet regardless it still did and yeah I'm a fan that's all I'm saying and at this point you know once I get past two paragraphs I just start talking to my phone so I'll fill in all the blanks of the conversation my own self.

Questions like "is this still relevant" or "could this be made today" are interesting ones, but the discussion in this episode really struggled to go anywhere else. As for whether Indy was successful, I'm really surprised that both Riley and Linus were so all-or-nothing. Sure, the ark didn't wind up in a museum, but it also didn't wind up with the nazis, so while Indy didn't succeed on both goals, I think he did on the more important one. There's room between total success and complete failure :P

Going back and watching the final scene from Raiders of the Lost Ark when Indy finds out where the Ark is going in the end; I can say that Linus was correct in his argument that Indy in the end technically lost because the Ark wasn't going to a place that he had desired which was with researchers or in the scientific community. In reality it was locked away by the U.S. army never to be opened.

If it's supposed to be a dumb action movie for boys to imagine themselves in then critique it as that. I mean if you were looking to buy a cheap but reliable pc for 1080p gaming would you want them saying how a particular pc is bad because it doesn't have two 2080tis and a threadripper 3990x so it is terrible at rendering 8k videos quickly?

I like the point earlier where it was said that these movies feel like they could be dropped in as an episode of a television show. And we only saw 3 of what was likely 50. And I think that helps with the character arc. Each episode doesn’t have to have an arc. Maybe after this Indy was like “boyyy I got the job done saving the world, but I didn’t do it for the right reasons....” unfortunately we miss out on this stuff having only seen a limited amount of him. Also has anyone seen the “young Indiana Jones” movies? Are they good, do they add more depth to the character?

As for character arcs, I have to say that many movie franchises fall short. At least they do in the last couple of decades. I increasingly find more satisfaction in TV series over movies unfortunately. John Crichton in Farscape has a fantastic character arc for instance as compared to even Luke. (I just rewatched it) =) I'd even say that Crichton is the Indiana Jones of space but far better. Haha. Anyway, another good one gents! Raiders has a quaint place in my heart for sure. Cheers!

When you look at the the production of this movie, and the time space that it occupied.. the idea of doing a sequel probably hadn't been a realistic probability but given that they were doing a sequel to Star wars, and developing like an entire industry of techniques and technology and special effects alongside these movies.. suddenly they kind of had a production line and doing it in sequels made sense, unfortunately I think a lot of the things that hurt the last two movies was was you know that the problem of success in my opinion.. they were both good movies but man did they really nail it for raiders.. and I think a lot of the benefit of raiders is that you don't have this dedication to your characters in in the series format.. they exist in the situations and the situations are the feature, the characters navigate and present that and do the thing and are definitely definitely definitely a plus and part of the experience but once they kind of took center stage you end up with the separation of we need to have a set piece but we're writing this thing about this thing, and it's not bad it's just not as good where you had a lot more dedication to the actual events taking place and and set pieces and and hijinks.. That is a very loose analysis that I just came up with right now.. but the first part isn't the first part is just how it is and thank God because you know ilm change the entire industry and it was cool, even if like everything that's good it backfires.. but having these movies developed with the technology, and interlinked in that regard also made the idea of making them far more feasible.. supposed to be irony that the second one was one of the most miserable shoots apparently but there's a lot of reasons for that and it wasn't ilm or the production line it was.. I'm pretty sure it was just bad timing and, from the sound of it really really bad luck like really straight up run a bad luck and you know what it was a really good movie, it's actually way better than I originally thought it was back when I first saw it going back and looking at it now it I think it's better than the third one looking at it from an objective..

One of my favorite things about Indiana Jones and it's really clear in raiders before they kind of do some more adventure tone shifts with the sequels.. this guy is basically if James Bond were competent.... like it seems kind of strange cuz he's got you know wild fist swings and and whatnot like the presentation isn't as convincing as Kung Fu born Bond.. but when you look at all the situations he gets into the choices he makes and his general ability to succeed it basic tasks and complex ones regardless.. there is you know that serialized Bond kind of setup or at least what bond kind of mainstayed into after from Russia with Love.. and you notice James Bond is not really good at his job, he's tenacious though thank goodness and eventually he gets there and usually follows a sort of strict Kabuki theater ask a series of events that should they alter in any slight way he'd be very dead, fortunately they don't and he succeeds through the plot devices alone that are laid out in sequence.. Indiana Jones usually doesn't rely on that he's just good at his as his job which we don't like I'm not sure what his job is but he's just good at things.. and it's kind of a rarity cuz I'm so used to the the trope where you have this like almost first circle series of poor decisions being made through character flaw establish etc.. I'm not saying those aren't things with Indiana Jones but it's funny how his character seems like that until you put the meat to the metal.... Actually sometimes literally now I think about it. Like, sure there's some decisions that maybe could have used more planning but that's also part of the he's like James Bond but competent.. if he decides to go chase down a Nazi convoy carrying the Lost ark of the covenant.. like I'm not sure he has a plan but he sure damn good at coming up with one as he goes because gosh darn it if he didn't very successfully route that entire convoy almost single-handedly.. James Bond would not be able to do that without serious plot devices or at least a a like strategic plot device situation where he just always had the upper hand and was being a badass before the inevitable incompetency. And I don't know for what it's worth it's just kind of it's kind of nice and I wish that would happen more often in movies like you know I'm sure he could get boring but, just the very fact that you're never expecting this guy to be as good at what he's doing and it never looks like he's good at it really but he always wins at it and he does so weird, if he's out done he's outgunned if he is outdone but has an idea that will work, he will then carry that out usually to varying degrees of success of course.. I wasn't as into the sequels as I was raiders raiders really is a near perfect movie.. not only for the time but I think in modern cases.. there's a level of competency that Spielberg has that allows for even older styles and technology of filmmaking in action sequences to have this coherency that subplants the cut reverse cut mess that most things end up being and got good God like now that you can do single take somehow they still manage to screw that up in terms of scene coherency and consistency and just you know like that that filmmaking part that you know takes the filmmaker try hard to really you know do the thing LOL.. not easy to do most people can't do it Spielberg is really good at it.. but anyhow I don't know I just came to this realization a few years ago and I'm like I'm never in a room where I can actually have this discussion so I'm just going to scream it out to the KZbin for an older post that's never going to get responded to.. am I making any sense with this one..

These were absolutely pivotal in my childhood, drove my interest in history. And I think that is something you guys missed on this, is that Indiana Jones also was about the curiosity of man and his own history(even twisted in the occult of Indy's world, the ark is apart of history). But yeah in the end it was just a dumb action flick.

If you guys want to do woke analysis that's fine. Viewing a movie through the lens of "wokeness" (Critical Theory) might provide insight on occasion. The problem here is that it felt like Riley was shoehorning it in and giving us Great Value Wokeness. Just because the people with Indy betray him, Riley interprets that as the movie depicting an entire people group as "scheming" and "sketchy people"? Sorry, but that's just dumb. The vast majority of people, almost certainly including those who made this movie, realize that every society has good and bad actors and they don't intend for every character to stand in as an archetype for an entire ethnicity. Once Riley said "I forgive all of this" I had to chuckle and go watch something else... Will probably listen to the rest later on podcast.

Linus's camera setup/setting make him look like he's wearing a ton of makeup - that distracted me so much I don't even know what movie they were talking about.

Expecting every character to have an arc is not expecting more from your entertainment, Riley. It's pushing your own agenda on someone else's art. Also, expecting every character to have an arc shows how little you actually understand about movies. Movies are an entertaining art form. Therefore, they don't have to stick to your arbitrary (and very scholastic) rules.

This one was...pretty cringe. Why did Riley get so offended when Linus said he didn’t like Shia? Whats with viewing a 30 year old movie through the lens of todays woke brigade stuff, why does there need to be a moral or heros journey? I feel bad Linus was the only one who really watched the movie and got it and didn’t just project onto it.
