Put a new BB in my GT and I didn’t know that torque wrenches only worked clockwise. Anyways when I notice a creak I had to hacksaw off the BB to get it off. It was so tight it snapped my park tool BB socket.

Costly mistakes I have done or seen: 1. Accurately assess your skills, future skills (age happens), time available for cycling, and financial situation. Ask friends and family for a brutal written review on these items as your perception may not be realistic. 2. Buy a used steel or aluminum frame bike (that reflects your assessment in #1) that you plan on using for a decade. 3. Get regular maintenance from a local bike shop owner that you make good friends with. The local bike shop owners need both friends and customers right now.

First pair of bouncy forks Marzocchi Z3's around 1999. Got very excited. Measured twice, cut once. Forgot to put the stem on. Cut it so short that it wouldn't fit the smallest DMR in LBS. Sent back to Italy for new steerer tube- £75. Measure THRICE, cut once (for some of us)

not a mountain biking experience, but expensive at the time, out for a training ride thinking to myself I'll change my tubes when I got home, going down the main street of a town that used to have the bike shop in the middle of that street, blew both tubes thankfully directly outside that shop.
My most costly mistake was featured on episode 321 of the dirt shed show when I went off a drop and landed on my head! Broke my ribs, two vertebrae and my collar bone!

I once borrowed my dad's bike to go riding with my mates up chopwell while I was up there over Christmas a few years back, bike had clips on so I grabbed his shoes to go with it, when i got to the carpark I went in the boot to find I'd grabbed only 1 shoe with cleats in and a random other shoe, I managed the ride but if you've ever tried riding clips without the cleats on your shoe it's not the most comfortable. Won't be doing that again!

I was backing up to get turned around in my drive and backed into my father in-laws suv. This was a mistake that became of the most embarrassing things that happened to me. When I was pre-riding the mtb nationals course at Mt. Snow, Vermont. I didn’t see a hole that I rode into and popped out of my pedal smacking my lady bits on the top tube. It knocked the breath out of me for so long, I’m surprised I didn’t pass out. Once I was able to breathe again, I finished my ride. I noticed that my shorts seemed awfully wet considering I wasn’t sweating much. They were full of blood. It turns out that when I hit the top tube I got a cut almost 2 inches long. So, I changed clothes, put ice in my shorts, and headed to the hospital. The doctor that sewed me up didn’t believe me when I told him what happened. Having to get my lady bits sewn up was bad enough, but having the doctor not believe how I got cut in that area was very embarrassing.

My mistake was when I recently changed the forks on my hardtail. I took the Rock Shox Recon forks out of my bike to take the crown race off. I used a screw driver and a hammer to release the crown race using the divet in the crown. It didn't work and the forks went back in the bike. I bought a crown race removal tool. took the forks out. It didn't work and damaged the rubber seal on the race. The forks went back in the frame. I also bought a crown race seating tool for when I got that race off the forks. It doesn't fit a tapered steerer tube. Not is all lost. It will fit the crown races on my hybrid and road bike. Except they most likely will never need a new headset. The road bike I don't ride much and my hybrid has a Chris King headset. So I bought a crown race setting tool That will work with tapered steerer. Then after finding out the crown race isn't coming off. I bought a Hope headset for the new forks. I haven't used that tool either. As the Hope headset has a split race and doesn't need one to fit it. Them I found out the rest of the headset isn't the type It would normally come with. So I had to buy a tool to remove the races out of the frame. With having to buy the tools as I found out I needed them and find the time around work. It took me 6 weeks to fit the fork. Those forks are the Rock Shox Domain. The first set of 38mm forks I've owned. But the second 38mm fork I've ridden. As 2 days after buying these forks. I bought Pinkeye.

Martyn's random tandem story sounds horrifying! Don't know whether not having any feeling in your foot was a good thing in that situation 😬😬😬 I have had to replace a seatpost on an old bike of mine that I got secondhand a year or so prior. The saddle started slipping so I took the clamp apart, cleaned and re-assembled. I was torquing up the bolt to 10nm as instructed I reached about 5 and then it started getting loose - the aluminium casting snapped around the bolt rendering the seat post scrap. It must have been overtightened at some point before fatiguing and failing. Thankfully it was a standard round seat post and I could get a cheap replacement but if it was a proprietary shaped seatpost, made of carbon or a dropper, I think my wallet would have cried.

I was running into this same problem. I only have one bolt that needs 34nm of torque. I already had a 3/8 inch Craftsmen torque wrench but all of my bike sockets were 1/4 so I got a 1/4 to 3/8 adapter. Not sure where you are but that Craftsman can be had for $50 at Lowe's or Amazon in the U.S. Also, my opinion, my 1/4 torque wrench is a Pro bike tool one from Amazon and it has worked great and it's cheap and came with all the sockets I needed.
