@jonnaas depends on her mood, but someone with no prior knowledge would probably instinctively start talking down to her like one would a normal 10 year old, and that would probably annoy her enough to remove all of your organs

I think a large part of touhou is taking the scary stuff and making it nice, the spellcard rules were done exactly for that after all, and Akyuu does comment on how it is a new era of coexistance between humans and youkai

Touhou has a unique vibe to it that I've ended up calling Cozy Eldritch Horror. If you read the lore, especially in some of the more narrative focused works like Forbidden Scrollery, it's clear that Gensokyo is one huge haunted house of mystery and scares. But because we always follow powerful, magical, and monstrous characters who live there, we share their perception - and to them it's not a just haunted house, but a haunted home!

Touhou can get pretty dark at times and ZUN just never focuses on it But personally i find it funny how there’s technically more Horror shown in Touhou than relationship

I love the implicit horror of the setting of Gensokyo. It's easy to forget that most youkai eating humans is established in the very first Windows games. Desperate, lonely people being led into Gensokyo by mysterious forces (Mostly Yukari), only to be deceived into feeling safe by the goofy and lighthearted manners of the strangely welcoming and uplifting girls they encounter, only to be turned into food when they let their guard down. It's all spared to the humans in Gensokyo, because they know the appearance is deceptive. But not outsiders. If there would be a predator that hunts humans, that's actually a really realistic way to do it over some kind of monstrous appearance - the ultimate ambush predator. And this feels like it 'evolved' naturally in a way that only exists in Gensokyo to fit both the pressure to be beautiful for danmaku, while still being capable of hunting humans. Such great storytelling.

As far as i remember, change of appearance is caused by change of perception of yökai's in human's eyes in recent times, and yökai themselfs becoming relatively tamer. I mean, most of them are strong enough not to need any ambush tactics. Not to mention that a part of human-like yökai do not eat humans, at all. Not as consecuence of individual choice or outside pressure, but because of the specifics of a yökai group they belong to, example: Kogasa Tatara Good theory, should've mentioned it was headcanon though. With all popular fan works touhou is already hard to navigate for newcomers

Most Youkai do not in fact eat humans, EoSD and some of the earlier games are outliers in 2hu. A lot of the stuff they set up isn't followed at all, an Omake said that Remilia is called the Scarlet Devil cus she's an extremely messy eater with blood, butt that's never shown in anything that comes later. In terms of eating humans, an extremely small number are confirmed to actually do that, Rumia is barely in, because she finds eating humans to be a pain, so she just scrounges off other Youkai, Mystia is said to be one of those Youkai iirc. Remilia is a light eater and Flan receives her food heavily processed, that's pretty much everyone that's confirmed to eat humans.

@@darkhorse744 It would be funny if Remilia isn't ever shown eating messy because she just wouldn't be caught dead showing a side of her she deems to be below her.(Yet she has no issues sitting in a toddler chair because she does not realize that being immature is a much bigger issue than being a messy eater) Rumia sticking out can be explained by the majority of Gensokyo just being a lot less old fashioned than her and not treating humans as lifestock being some sort of ethical revolution. Afterall, the reason she continues wanting to eat people is that she "thinks it is the job of a Youkai", which wouldn't have to be specified for her specifically if it was a relevant view on things.

I think a key factor is that that we are in the know. We know these characters, we know their Personalities ETC. It's a lot scarer if you are a complete outsider. I mean a friend of mine runs a Touhou Isekai Campaign, let me tell you even Rumia is a lot scarer if you're normal person. Though once we all settled in, it became a lot easier and became standard Touhou affair.

On the surface you see touhou takes a parody like take on youkais and the world surrounding it. When you go a little bit deeper you see the true nature of youkais and the dark nature of gensokyo. And at the bottom of the story you see the truth of gensokyo and the true horror hiden in it

I think the horror of Gensokyo is amplified by how it collectively views outsiders. There's a narrative among everyone IN the wonderland that the outside world abandoned them, that they are to blame. This kind of gets shattered once you remember that forgetting is involuntary, but that is common sense and Gensokyo threw that out long ago. "The kami and yokai should also be held responsible for keeping/not keeping belief in themselves active? It was *WE* who placed the barrier, a literal manifestation of the problem, treating it as a solution? Gal you are spewing gibberish, go check yourself and avoid the Hakurei miko." Half of the now massive cast probably hasn't even considered the implications of all this. Gensokyo is the "Don't think about it" zone. And in that climate, the idea that the outside world is to blame flourished, making everyone more apathetic or malicious towards outsiders, humans and yokai alike. In Gensokyo you are the other. It is not just a chaotic wonderland, but one that dislikes you specifically. You better hope you have enough luck and crazy at your side like Sumirenko to push back and slot in. Otherwise you ain't living, you either die properly, end up a lost and tortured (possibly amnesiac) yokai or become a vengeful spirit, viciously obsessed with the land that hated you, hating it back. A touhou game focused on outsider vengeful spirits would be interesting tho- (I may have written this twice, this is version 2, screw KZbin)

@Монс-й1ь I mean, yeah, Gensokyo in general is left up to interpretation so everyone has a different idea about it but I don't think my word spill over here is too off the mark. In general it is a very nice place with its own funky rules but if you are an outsider human that stumbled in you are kinda screwed.

TIL the specific word for fear of crickets. I like how Touhou still keeps some of the horror elements in the background of the youkai (ie. kappa extending arms vs. shirikodama extraction). It gives a good base for writers to go off of even within just canon and not folklore. Yuuka being in one of the games you featured is interesting though - even beyond the folklore basis ZUN still makes the youkai have quite fearsome backgrounds. Although I suppose that's because the youkai _need_ that fear to live.

Touhou is scary, but it isn't that scary because you always follow the perspective of a being of ENOUGH power and knowledge to survive and live there comfortably. A very effective way to turn touhou into horror is a horror game where you're a normal ass human from earth that somehow teleports to gensokyo and has to fend for themselves.

Once again great video MegaFrog!! I really appreciate your analysis' with the Touhou Project because I think you promote to the western audience the activity of interfacing with the deeper folklore that Touhou has to offer. I found this video compelling because upon reading the title I immediately thought of Dolls in Pseudo Paradise as being the pointed scary part of Touhou in my experience with the Project, and then sure enough you cited it as a primary source for establishing the cautionary tales that in reality tell of the very real dangers that are found in Gensokyo. Initially after only learning about Touhou from the story in the games the project was still a cute and childish fantasy to me, but after reading DiPP while listening to the album a part of my perspective definitely began to see the horror that can be interpreted in the subtexts of the games stories. Contrary to being scared for the fun of being scared like when playing a horror game and letting yourself be frightened, I genuinely felt fear and anxiety while reading DiPP which I commend ZUN's storytelling because only a few other novels have gotten under my skin like that. Anyways thanks for the fun and topical video it was cool to hear about DiPP in your presentation!

My idea is gensokyo used to be scarier and over time is becoming less hopeless or frightening. For example look at how unnerving was Dolls in pseudo paradise can be.

That's basically the plot of much of touhou media, gensokyo is becoming a lot more balanced between the humans and non humans, and between non humans themselves, so someone tries to invent a new method of getting power other than the fear of humans. Whether it is religion or anything else.

Correct Answer: The franchise can be as scary as you want it to be. Fans have made things like "Little Reimu", but they also made things like "Koishi Komeiji's Heart Throbbing Adventure". That's the thing about Touhou. It can be any Genre you want it to be. The fact that everyone is a cute girl doesn't really matter in an original series. It's how you portray them that counts.

Akyuu is not just Gensokyo’s most prolific author, but she’s also incredibly adept at horror storytelling specifically. Just look at what happens with the hundred ghost stories event in Forbidden Scrollery, which would have been a bit of a let down had she not been there to basically say “you all suck at this, let me show you true fear”. Granted, Marisa helped, but it was primarily Akyuu.

In the new CDs there's a short story from the perspective of a shrine maiden who says: "It looks like some strange person has slipped in again. I'd better do something before she gets to the shrine... Oh, that girl... doesn't look like a human or a youkai." This seems to reference the blonde-haired girl of the old CDs who is not human anymore but isn't a full youkai either(Until the end where she fully transforms into one). So although I think it's true that the entire story is just a made up tale, there seems to be some semblance of truth in there that indicates that some events did occur.

There are fan theory about Kitsume is blood thirsty Youkai that her head is not actually hers but its her last victim's head. Also but there is another creepy cannon theory that Nitori is killing spree. She has spell card called "hundreds of shirikodamas". And those things are ussually organs that is found in humans an*s which Nitori killed like lot of people just to use their body parts on one SPELL CARD

I used to play a lot of horror games. Some the forest or phasmophobia and lots of survival horror stuff. I quit and that’s when I started playing Touhou shmups. Although I say to people I still play survival horror.
