Undertale takes place in year 201x, because Toby Fox created the "undertale" demo in 2013, it took more than 2 and less than 3 years to finish undertale, then it got published in 2015.

Uhm... But Papyrus seems to know about cars. He also has a car shaped bed. This means that either Papyrus has seen the surface or someone else has seen the surface and made this bed for him. However, Papyrus can't have seen the surface since he doesn't know about the sun. Even if monsters were trapped underground for ages, it can't be that long, since cars must've been around when the war ended.

Well, the Underground has a dump where human trash ends up falling. It could be possible a broken car fell down into the Underground and into the dump where is was converted into a bed.(Or a magazine fell with pictures of cars in it and Papyrus made his bed based from that)

6:45 Although UT no doubt is a future setting, I find the tech theory to be a bit of a stretch, many sciences are scattered across numerous feilds, Monsters however are set with a more immediate and in their face goal of escaping, so it would also be likely all technological efforts were set to puzzle building and finding a (literally) soulless way to exit the underground, and the game doesn't hint even the slightest to mosters succumbing to illness besides determination overdose, so medicinal studies we humans have to divert time, funding and energy to are pointless to them, space and oceans are quite literally inaccessible to them, and most convenience technologies are salvaged from surface scrap.

Ok ok, Papyrus isn't a Boss Monster, the only Boss Monsters in the whole Underground are The Dreemurrs and, probably the Old Gersson (turtle shop guy) because they are all VERY old and Boss monsters only age when their children age, which well... the Dreemurrs obviously cant cuz, u know, and Old Gersson probably lost his children in some untold and sad way.... i say this because those are the only characters which are confirmed to be present in the first war of humans and monsters, also Boss Monster Souls persist a few seconds after Death and then shatter which you can see ingame happening with Toriel's and Asgore's souls if you kill them (i didnt) but its not happening with Papyrus, proving that hes a normal Monster.

I figured that the monsters were more focused on science then humans were, because while humans were fighting amongst themselves and had the barriers of religion, language, and nationality, monsters seem to be one united, English speaking culture. They spent a lot more time on science, so their tech is a bit more advanced. Not to mention that they have magic, which certainly helps. In Mettaton's quiz show, the answer to what makes robots is metal and magic. We can assume most of the Underground's Tech is based on washed down human things (like anime) and magic, along with their own research in certain fields helpful to life Underground. I place Chara's fall at 2010, the earliest possible 201X; and Frisk's fall in about 2021. This puts eleven years for the six humans to fall down (another thing to remember is that as time goes on, there are more humans to fall, so the rate increases). Not to mention Flowey messing with the timeline and reseting could result in a phantom expansion of time, thus making the monsters feel like it was a lot longer (Toriel's line "It's been a long time since a human fell down here" or something similar comes to mind). As for when the monsters got trapped Underground, I put that around maybe 1000, about a millennium underground sounds long enough and also fits with having Toriel and Asgore be about a millennium old themselves. All in all, I do agree that the main story of the game takes place in the future, but in the very near future, not 301X or something

I think we need to take magic into account for all of this. In fact, robots are canonically said to be made of metal and magic. Since both humans and monsters are shown to be able to use magic (I mean how else would humans have sealed the barrier?), we can't exactly assume that humans have progressed just through technology alone. Also, Alphys mentions that she has been studying parallel universes if you choose that you don't know the answer to the crush question and Mettaton's comments heavily imply that they are talking about the player. Does that mean the player is canonically in an alternate universe? Obviously I can't answer that but it's worth noting. Undertale's timeline is irrelevant if this is an alternate universe since technological advancements would obviously be completely different based on what has changed. Even if this were our universe, Asriel using a camcorder implies that 201X is unlikely to have been 2015 at all, but a completely different year since VHS players would have gone out of style in the 2000s. If the monsters got this technology from the humans, they would have had much better technology by 2015 since by then, newer and better cameras would have been thrown out and, Asriel being royalty, he probably would have had first pick of human technology. That or they replicated the technology, which goes back to my point that, by 2015, monster technology would probably have progressed past 80s and 90s technology. I also don't think the monsters would have PCs obviously from the 90s (as you see in Papyrus's and Alphys's areas) if this took place far in the future. My point is, I think it's impossible to pin down a time period for Undertale. It's highly doubtful Undertale is intended to take place in our reality at all. Which means that pretty much anything goes, technology wise, and that the use of magic implies that monster technology is likely to be quite different from human technology. And the fact that the human technology we do see in the Underground isn't any more modern than the early 2000s serves to make the timeline even more confusing. It's possible that the timeline is kept vague on purpose.

Okay, but how about this-- I belive Undertale DOES take place in the future, but I also believe the date of 201X written on the calendar marks the date that Chara fell down. This is because if you go to Asgore's house in the genocide route Chara will say 'the say I came here' and I think they counted that as their 'birthday' thus the presents. Also, I believe the Underground's technology is slightly behind that of on the surface. Key evidence: The VHS recorder and tapes used by Asriel. These are items from a few years before 201X, but are used in favor of DVDs. Then I believe the next few kids fell down over the course of at least 100 years (although the evidence for this is weaker) because during the second dinner with Sans, he says 'She (Toriel) laughed like she hadn't in a hundred years'. It could just be to describe her sorrow, but it could also be a clue in the narrative since that is the type of game this is. What do you think?

It's possible that human society regressed at some point in the Undertale timeline, due to some sort of catastrophe, self-inflicted or otherwise. It would explain why the Underground continued to advance unaffected, while the surface technology seems very modern. It might also explain why a cowboy fell into the underground, after 201X. I mean, it's possible they were just an enthusiast, or a cosplayer, but there's really no way to tell.

also, we know that when Chara fell(and before Asriel was born), they had video tapes at least, from the archives in the true lab. and that they were portable enough for toriel to casually record things in bed, so not the over the shoulder behemoths of the early 90s. in addition, at the beginning of the game, when you find the toy knife, frisk mentions that nowadays it's a rarity to see things made of plastic, which is definitely not the case today, but could be if petroleum reserves began to run dry in a century or so. Alphys also mentions that most of the stuff they develop comes from bits of junk that floats down into the dumo, which is why she visits there frequently for supplies, ideas, and anime. also, and this is a simple one, only Asgore, Toriel, and a handful of ancient monsters like the turtle merchant, actually were alive to see Asriel and Chara. the way most of the others talk about them, make it sound like they learned about it in history class, and weren't alive to see it. but then again... the dogs apparently were, because they came in second to Toriel and Asgore in the 'Nose Nuzzle' competition of '98 and I kinda doubt that they were nuzzling noses after war was declared... but Alphys and Undyne and even sans, didn't recognize toriel as the old Queen, until she introduced herself/sans recognized her voice from the door, so that must have at least been longer than they were alive...

The calendar in New Home confirms that Chara is the one in the intro on 201X. Interesting to note is it says the date is marked "near the end of" the year 201X, leaving little room for the years to not advance between Chara and Frisks' arrivals.

It's pretty obvious that Undertale takes place in the future, but the tricky part is figuring out how far in the future it is. During the Reunited part, where you can go back to the beginning to see Asriel, if you stop by Gerson's shop (was that his name? I can't remember), he'll tell you a few things: Boss Monsters, or the breed of monsters the Dreemurr's are, have a weird aging process. Once they have a kid, they only age as the kid ages. So if the kid dies, they no longer age unless they have another kid. And because Toriel and Asgore divorced, they stayed the same age they were when Asriel died forever. They're supposed to be about Gerson's age. I'm not sure how fast monsters age, but if Gerson is anything like a normal turtle, it's been over 50 years, and considering he's a monster, it could be longer, because their lifespan.

I had a thought while watching the video and did some research. I don't think monsters would have been likely to invent telescopes on their own while underground, since there aren't really stars there, but they do have telescopes. So I looked up when telescopes were invented and apparently it's 1608, so monsters were probably sealed underground after then, unless I'm missing something.

One thing I think should be said here is that most monsters do not know Toriel or even that she even existed, like how Alphys says "There are two of them???", I would think the royal scientist would know that kind of information. Though we are unable to tell the lifespan of monsters, I think we can assume at least one generation of monsters has gone by between Chara and Frisk.

I have an idea for this, actually... Monsters could have a different time system for them, since they don't have the sun, moon, stars, and night-day cycles. I liked striped shirts before Frisk made them cool. ;) I'm working on adapting "Undertale" into a screenplay/film project for fun and the contrast between fantasy and science fiction is a little difficult to balance. If I had to pick one direction to go in I'd definitely choose fantasy, but there are important parts of the story that take place in Alphys' lab and Hotland. I was thinking that maybe in the screen adaptation the monsters would construct their inventions from trash that falls into the underground. Kind of like how the rats in "the Secret of Nimh" use garbage to create rooms, elevators, and conductors for their stolen electricity. Obviously the Hotland area would look quite different if I go in that direction, but what do you guys think?

I don't feel like doing accurate reliable research right now so here's a wikipedia page that suggests they've existed for a long time. I think it's safe to say though they've existed before Undertale started development.

if you have to think about it there is that scene where asriel does take him up to the human Village and it shows them using Spears and other types of old weapons against asriel when he brought up Chara so technically if chara fell down in 201x why would they use spears to attack Asriel

my explanation is that the X in the date isn't the final digit but instead, a dating system starting in the 9th century when Chara fell, like how our date has AD, so Chara could have fallen back in the 11th century given they came from a village, and the monsters just put way more work and skill into science.

I always thought that 201X was when the game starts, meaning when Chara fell down, also being 2015 or present day, and then frisk fell in 201XX, but that was just my idea of the timeline. There's probably a way to prove me wrong

Just a thought but if undertale takes place in a alternate universe to our own wouldn't that rule out nearly everything because of how little we now about this alternate universe
