I assume the memory timing straps are too tight for double capacity memory chips? So that when it drops to idle speeds, the timings get very tight. That's just the first thing that comes to my mind. I believe he used some custom straps, but there's several that ya need, from idle to max and everything in between, all 7-8 stages. Could be any one of the performance stages other than max.

As with most things JaysTwoCents says; terrible advice. Doing this makes the VGA idle at high clock speeds, causing high power draw when the card isnt doing anything. All for a margin for error improvement in benchmark score, not worth it
@VarnavskyIvan

@@AndroidBeacshire , This is a solution to the black screen problem with increased VRAM, not because of some points in benchmarks. The solution is not very good, but it still allows the video card to work with doubled VRAM, and not to crash every time after 3D load.
@LambentTuguy
@LambentTuguy Ай бұрын
@AndroidBeacshire this is true BUT notice he thinks the issue is the power dropping below 12v and then crashing? Well this could address that issue. A bandaid fix but could still be a fix none the less. He clearly voided the warranty on card, so that aspect shouldn't be considered.

These mods will save a lot of these video cards from now on, not only because of the potential of the RTX 3000 which are more moderate to make than AMD's for now! I'd suggest to get some sort of cheap donor to learn on. Don't do this on your main card or anything that you use on daily basis. Otherwise it'll hurt far too much if you ruin the one thing you need at any given time. Luckily I was smart about this when it comes to PS4 controller repairs. I have three controllers (one original, 2 cheap aliexpress replicas), cheap controller had pretty gnarly stick drift and original one has a slight one, for learning I used the replica one in case I screw up and I did, now that controller is dead, but I learned so much from that and managed to swap analog sticks on my original one after that failure. Just a simple repair yet so easy to mess everything up. Don't be scared to fail, just be mindful when it comes to these upgrades (if it's not broken, don't try to fix it unless you know what you're doing and will be able to revert everything back to normal with applied upgrade)

This upgrade is definitively worthwhile if one has the faster binned 2GB Samsung too (K4ZAF325BM-HC16). RTX 3070 is severely VRAM limited in many new games, including Jedi Survivor, Horizon Forbidden West, Cyberpunk 2077 and many others. Those games need at least 11GB of VRAM, so even RTX 3080 10GB is having not enough. It is also interesting that RTX 3080 10GB is already obsolete, in terms of VRAM, yet many pay hefty price for it, only to realize they run out of VRAM.

This crashing after switching back to idle is a known problem after upgrading cards to a "non official VRAM amout". Maybe some older drivers will work but I'm not sure. Furthermore you can try the card in Linux if switching back to idle after load works there. Another work-around I've seen is to add some more capacitors to the memory rail. Maybe it will reduce the peeks after changing the load.

People always say that the bottleneck when you go over your VRAM is the system RAM. However, in reality, your system RAM isn't all that much slower than your VRAM. The problem is the PCIe slot bandwidth! Even a full 16 lanes of PCIE Gen 5 can only match the bandwidth of 3200 MHz DDR4. And there is no GPU that supports Gen 5 PCIe yet. The max you can expect is 16 lanes of PCIE Gen 4; which is half of that bandwidth!
@GraphicsCardRepairs-tk7ql
@GraphicsCardRepairs-tk7ql 2 ай бұрын
You are right. The bottleneck is the PCIE bandwidth. But compared to the GDDR6 VRAM, GDDR4 is much slower. GDDR6 is directly available to the GPU compared the the DDR4 RAM which has totravel through the PCIE than to tthe CPU and then to the DDR4 RAM and make its way back. This is a topic on its own. May be i will cover it in the future.

I have that exact 3070, bought it new in January of 21, was happy with the card for around a year and then started to run into vram size issues so upgraded to the 6800xt and very happy with it. The black screen issue might be your power supply, the 3000 series had very bad transient spikes so it's probably hitting a spike just when the load stops, I have a 1200W PSU so didn't have any issues with my 3070 or 6800xt.

It was before the youtubers started talking about it and it was because I was mining ETH at the time and wanted to keep mining while I played games and some games ran on the 3070 no problem while mining but some didn't, after switching to the 6800xt I had no such problems any more + both cards were basically free as I mined enough ETH to pay for both and even got some left.

I've had a similar issue with my 3090 where gpu worked fine while browsing and gaming but when exiting game it would crash. I've flashed the bios to latest version but that didn't helped. What fixed it was taking off the factory overclock by enabling "Debug mode" in Nvidia control panel which will run Nvidia's reference clock for Gpu core and ram.

The Arc A770 I bought "Just to see" has been a flawless performer even out pacing my borrowed 4060 just to test things out.
