Utah fans are the Raiders fans of college football. Sorry Drake, they’re not a great fan base. Plus, their team, although talented, isn’t as good as Utah fans think they are. Drake’s sitting here talking about Utah winning as if Utah controlled their own destiny the last couple of years. Fact is, they haven’t. They’ve been to the Rose Bowl, sure, (only in the recent past) but they had to get in on the loss of other teams. Utah fans are just punks who’re upset their team has NEVER been as good as they think it is.

On the other hand, as a true blue BYU fan, usually the Ute fans I meet in real life outside of the state of Utah are actually pretty great.

Been a BYU fan my whole life, but I used to love Utah. Why not root for the school that wears my home state’s name, right? It wasn’t until I got older that I realized how vicious and arrogant the U’s fans were (and I don’t mean that in a good way). The fanbase slowly made me grow resentful of them. They act the same way whether their teams are good or bad, and I don’t believe being good at a game warrants that kind of behavior towards other human beings regardless. I know there are good Utah fans, of course there are! But the loudest portion of the fanbase takes it far beyond playful sports rivalries. What about the Utah fans who posted jokes about Jay Hill after he had a heart attack? Is that acceptable because they’re “good at football”? I wouldn’t say so.

As an Utah fan, I’ll agree with most of Drake’s comments. It’s annoyed me too. I think a lot of it comes from always being overlooked. This is the timeline of BYU fans comments: Utah in mountain west- you’ll never be better than us. Utah gets invite to PAC 12- BYU fans immediately say you will never be good enough to win the south. Utah wins the south and Y fans say we will never win the conference. We win it twice. Same with media. We go 12-0 and smoke Bama who was #1 most the season: finish 2nd in the polls. We smoke Pitt in the fiesta going 12-0. Finish like 7th. Utah fans are a like mad at disrespect and we’ll let you know when you come after us. BYU fans have done it forever.

Just because you're good doesn't mean you should act like an asshole. If you're actually good, you act like it. Back when Nebraska was a powerhouse, they had the nicest fans in the Big 8/12. Same with KU basketball fans. If you're winning all the time, it's easy to be nice to the opposing fans, but for some reason Utah fans haven't figured that out. Seems like a lot of them are insecure or have little man syndrome.

I loved being in the pac 12, now I love being in the Big12. Coming from the MW, those first few years were rough. To me, it felt like being boys among men. Then we started competing in that league. It was exciting to watch. This move to the big 12 feels different. It feels more like we belong, that we can come in and compete right from the beginning. I’m excited for this move.

The pac 12 was really good last year and a shadow of its former self for the entire decade leading up to last year. Being generally towards the top of that conference for the last few years just isn’t as impressive as they think it sounds. Heck, byu went I believe 6-0 or 7-0 against that conference a couple years ago.

I think what a lot of other B12 fan bases are missing is the context. Utah went up from a group of 5 to the Pac-12. They were told they could never compete on a Power 5 level, then back in 2018 they made their first championship game out of 4 in the next 5 years. Winning two back-to-back. We were the underdogs and finally broke through. Ask Pac-12 fans and I think most would say they have high respect for Utah and their fans. We could all agree on a common enemy in USC, Oregon, or other big brands. Then the narrative switches. People claim the pac-12 is weak, and that’s the only reason Utah won. This feels like disrespect to Utah as if they couldn't actually be good enough to win it in normal circumstances. Then there are rumors that because the Pac-12 doesn't make the playoffs, they aren't good and ultimately this the reason it fell apart. When the truth was that it was just competitively balanced with parity and we played late games that East Coast people didn't watch. USC bailed out on the conference due to poor management and caused a cascade of dominos to fall. The Pac-12 was not weak. Despite evidence for its strength manifested with out-of-conference wins the last two years. This narrative was still pushed, particularly by BYU fans. They had their first victory over Utah in 10 years and arrogantly stated they would have won the Pac-12 in 2020 and 2021. Then they join the Big 12 while they are heckling about our conference. Being prodded first by them, Utah jabs back at BYU’s conference too, not knowing their conference would meet its end eventually and they would need to be rescued by the Big-12. They were always loyal to the Pac-12, and it was a cruel irony that they would go to the same conference as BYU. BYU fans had a heyday with this. They literally stirred up all of the other fanbases in the Big-12 against Utah and made them enemy #1. Then by the time Utah joins, Utah fans have to be defensive out of the gate. There is no mutual enemy, like Oklahoma, to take off some of the heat. Utah fans are not used to this attention, and instead of taking it like champs they are defensive and lash out in retaliation. Coincidently Utah fans are simultaneously bullish about the 2024 team, not because they play in a "weaker" conference now, but because of all the returning talent. This may be the best team they've had in decades. So to sum up, the root of the ill feelings towards the Big 12 and Utah had nothing really to do with the Big 12, it had everything to do with BYU.

Go spend some time on a Deseret news thread about BYU (or Salt Lake Tribune, or KSL) 80% of the comments are Utah fans haYting on BYU. They are not interested in talking about the abilities of individual players, or Game strategies, or rankings, or anything else relative to the game, they are only interested in haYting BYU in every possible form or fashion. So whatever animosity UU fans have generated in BYU fans, it is self-inflicted. This omnipresent ugliness has been observed by everyone and garnered. Ute fans, the reputation of being ugly by everyone who follows their comments. It’s been that way for decades. My first basketball game at UU back in the 70s exposed me to my first F+ck BYU T-shirts, so it’s been going on a long time and started by U. Harsh reality? UU reaps what U sow. Look at the difference in the two universities, BYU is always going to have more money than Utah, you are a small state school so how are you going to compete with them? we are entering an era where are the schools who have the financial capability are going to begin to really Flex their muscle capabilities and that should be a real concern, especially to small state financed schools like Utah.
