This is what happens when you live in a self-obsessed time. All people want to see in shows are themselves. Most shows these days are just shitty hagiographies of the writer(s). No universal themes, nothing anyone beside themselves can identify with. No wonder mainstream art is such dog shit nowadays.

Self-insert is the cardinal sin of writing.
@Sokolva
@Sokolva Жыл бұрын
@@Zachary-usually in the hands of poor writers, but some famous examples are incredible. “The Divine Comedy” has a self insert main character, as does two of Leo Tolstoy’s most famous novels “War and Peace” and “Anna Karenina” with important characters amongst the large cast who are self-inserts. Also “Novel Written on Yellow Paper” if that can be considered an example as its very direct and open about it. Very likely “Wuthering Heights”. So many others. It can be done well but the author has to view themselves with honesty and thought, and put just as much effort and compassion into the other characters. It’s like self-portrait-great artists can comment on themselves and their natures in a truly interesting way that is a gift to art. Unfortunately, I’ve heard so many inexperienced writers say they can only write themselves as a character and not see this as an issue; I believe this attitude is where some of the problems and blindness of poor self inserts come from.

I strongly think that characters who are mean and narcissistic can be very fun to watch, especially when there is no half ass tragic backstory and they don't care that they are horrible people. That being said, you can't make a character like that but have the show claim they are a good person. Embrace the villainy or have the protagonist be decent. This clearly did neither.

This is basically the reason why Rick Sanchez worked as a protagonist despite being almost the same in terms of attitude and d-baggery. Velma is portrayed as a "good guy." Rick is not. Rick is a questionable figure at best. Morty is who the audience is supposed to empathize with and he works as the audience's proxy for liking Rick. If Morty wasn't in the show to do that, Rick's character would be insufferable to watch no matter how cool the show is. We'd basically just be watching him be a dirt bag to his family while bullying Jerry and going on whacky adventures in-between.
@bobaorc7839

That's why I adore Zuko's character from Avatar TLA. While Zuko had a tragic backstory, the narrative itself never forgives him for his negative actions until he himself reflects, takes accountability for them, and grows past them. The closest the narrative comes to using the tragic backstory is in the early story when Iroh is contextualizing Zuko's treatment of the helmsman and his crew. Which honestly could just be handwaved as explaining to the audience, as it's our first experience with that plotline. Yet even then it's during the storm that nearly claimed the life of the helmsman had Zuko not risked himself to save him that make them respect Zuko as their leader. Not his tragic backstory, or his Uncle playing defense for him.

I haven't watched the show, but every review I've watched, none of the "jokes" they've shown come across as actual jokes. I'm reminded of the Simpsons episode where Homer gets a spot voice acting the new character on Itchy & Scratchy. There's all this hype and buildup, and then the reveal is his character is just a pathetic collection of dated buzzwords and catchphrases trying way too hard to be cool. The joke is how out of touch the character is. Everyone hates it. Every character on Velma feels like this only without the self realization of parody. Adding onto how Velma is a lot like Rick Sanchez in this show, I think a big reason why characters who are made to act like Rick so often fail is because the show they’re in fails to recognize their actions as wrong. @@notmything6629 tbh all this is making me interested in watching future episodes and I’m someone who dropped it after season 2. There’s just something so interesting about a channel having enough faith in a show to keep going after firing such a seemingly huge core piece of that show. I’ve seen a lot of people saying that Justin hasn’t even been in the writer’s room for some time (which, again, just sounds like a positive) so it makes sense that adult swim could think they could keep going, but it’s still interesting to me.

I’ve heard people also compare Velma to Daria. But Velma has several key differences that really change everything. For starters, unlike Velma, Daria was a real outsider and going against the flow, not just bitching about everything as a character trait. She had almost no friends at all, and had very little self-comfidence. Also even though she could be cynical, she rarely attacked people to their face and especially not based on modern progressist moralist trends, she only called out genuine stupidity of her peers and society as a whole. And last but not least, she occasionally was able to question herself instead of being an ass constantly. She felt relatable because she hated the growing stupidity of the world and everything that’s wrong with society, she wasn’t just being a smartass out of pure egotism.
@A-Duck
@A-Duck 2 жыл бұрын
The way Daria communicated her views was also charmingly well written. When she expressed an observation or criticism, it was almost always through a sarcastic witticism, the idea was written out in a banter/joke like format that actually had descriptive value. Her commentary would often then be responded to, opening up for further exploration in a back and forth. From what little of Velma I've seen, her character (and the shows writing in general) doesn't do that. She pontificates in a very shallow manner, with no nuance or depth to speak of. Like when someone name drops a buzzword in place of actually communicating the meat of the idea. This is a common thing in modern lowbrow political discourse, where it's easier to fling labels and buzzwords than actually describe and argue. In a word, Velma is pretentious. Daria is not.

Daria wasn't mean to be mean; she was frustrated by a world that could be so much better, and she even helped people once in a while, especially if she felt they were getting a raw deal. I'm not saying that Daria was a flawless character - in fact flaws were a big thing about her - but she had more than her share of good traits too, to balance out the more off-putting ones. It's always a good thing if a show's lead is likeable, but even if they're not, it's sufficient to be relatable. Daria wasn't always easy to like, but you could at least see how she turned out as she did.
@KhaosAdmiral
@KhaosAdmiral 2 жыл бұрын
Furthermore, Unlike Velma's supporting cast, Daria's Supporting cast despite falling into well worn archetypes actually have a good deal of depth to them like for example take Daria's sister Quinn, now on the surface Quinn may be your standard shallow dumb popular girl but we are shown that she is actually pretty intelligent and really only acts the way she does because she's really insecure for most of the series that being popular is the only thing she's good at and actively sabotages herself in order to fit in with people like Staci. Kevin Thompson may be the idiot jock and star quarterback, but he's ultimately a pretty chill guy. And Jodie Landon's entire character is one of the most nuanced and fascinating deconstructions of the whole Token minority characters.

your two minute Velma skit was funnier than the whole season one of the show 😂 HBO refused to use this video (after requesting it), when in reality, they should have hired MeatC to write the whole thing, it would've been definitely much more successful 💀

This show reminded me of the 30 Rock episode where Liz Lemon is nervous about going to a high school re-union because she was awkward and got bullied in high school...only for her to learn when she shows up that everyone was actually afraid of her because of all the mean things she said to them. "Velma," or Mindy Kaling really, come across as someone who thinks that because they had/have anxieties and weren't/aren't the Prom Queen, somehow they are automatically the protagonist and everything they say and do should be celebrated.

Velma is the type of show to make an episode about a ghostly possession plot, and turn it into being about how the ghost is white and didn't ask consent first.

When I realized the voice actress for Daphne was the Mom from "Fresh off the boat" (Constance Wu), I couldn't see Daphne as a young teen anymore. Don't get me wrong, Constance does amazing in everything she's in, it's just like hearing that voice be a Mother to 3 children prior to realizing it was her was kind of mind blowing.

They could've saved the show by tackling the harshest crimes out there, like a ghost that commits hate crimes, or a werewolf who's a serial sexual assaulter, but *shocker* it's really the creepy guy who's local version of Radio Shack went under and he swore vengeance for years at the local City Council. Shaggy knew this was coming and tried to warn the group for years but they'd replaced him with Norbert or whatever tf.
