I'm starting a Veterinary Nursing course at my University this year and would love it if you could do a video on how you study, make notes, revise, schedule work, study and social life and how you managed to read all those textbooks so fast and the best ways of retaining all the information they provide. I'd really appreciate it as I have no clue how to plan my study time or how I'm going to tackle, read and remember everything in all the textbooks I get given. Thanks :)

Vet tech student here. I have quite a few of those books! One I found really helpful was Mosby's Veterinary PDQ. It fits in your pocket so it's awesome to have on you for your clinical rotation. I've started buying VTNE books. I enjoy Mosby's Comprehensive Review as well. It puts the information in a list format. I find it easier to read because there isn't a lot of fluff like there are in some textbooks.

I loved this! I also was in the field for 7 years as a veterinary assistant and then went to Cedar Valley College to earn my degree. I graduated in 2014 and passed my board. It was an excellent program! Gotta love submitting those videos towards the end The surgical video was the hardest for me. Yes! Those books for dentistry are wonderful! I've been working in veterinary dentistry for 14 years now and love it. Thanks for making this blog!!

You run into these daily. Cats are assholes in the clinic. They are often so freaked out by being there, all the crazy smells, especially scared, upset barking, growling dogs they may or may not be able to see, etc. You learn to get creative when handling them. As a last resort, if the surgery, for example, needs to be done you can rabies pole them. It allows you to secure them in a corner, or wherever, while keep the head away from the back end, long enough for you to inject a sedative. On rare occassion there are just some animals that cannot be handled. If you cant even sedate by darting them, then they are sent hime. Sometimes for the really bad ones, owners can presedate them at home. One way I liked handling upset dogs was keeping the dog in the backseat of the car, have owner distract the head while i would inject vaccines at the other door. Sometimes two owners would work, one outside car at head, the other inside leaning their body against dog, pressing dog into back of seat. These only work with specific dogs. You learn to get fast. For dogs that just posture, show a little teeth with a minor growl or snap, I would get leash on them and then wrap it around their nose, sorta like lasso-ing, then pull it tight. Then you have control in one hand while you draw blood, vaccinate, sedate, etc with the other. Cats sometimes calm down if you can get a towel over them, especially their head/eyes, some dogs too. Towels are great because you can burrito wrap them in it and they cannot move. You can tuck them under your arm like a football and carry them around. You will learn techniques in school for how to catch and restrain animals, aggressive or not. I'm sure there are videos on it. The goal is to get in and out with the least amount of stress on the animal as you can. Hope that helps.

I’m really hoping that you can help me out! I am moving back to Houston Texas with my boyfriend in August and have recently decided to switch my studies from nursing to veterinary they’re saying. I don’t have any clinical experience, however I do have my final interview with a veterinarian and owner of a local clinic here in Virginia. I can’t decide whether an on-site campus experience or online it would be best suited for me. The best school in Houston that I have done a lot of research on is called Vet Tech Institute of Houston. It has very good reviews from former students! It’s an 18 month program which would be awesome, but wouldn’t allow me to come home to visit my family for those 18 months, so that’s the only downside really. My other option would be to work as a vet assistant until fall of 2019, and then enroll in an online program at that time so that I’ll have some experience to go off of and hopefully learn more on the job training. Do you think gaining one years experience as a vet assistant/unlicensed tech would be enough for me to consider an online program? Or would you recommend it for those with more than a year of experience? Thankfully, I have plenty of time to decide on this, but I have such a one track mind in this kind of thing and really just want to set a plan for before we move to Houston! I can’t tell you how grateful I am for your videos and you’re honestly so impressive to me! I noticed that the page on Facebook of the vet that you work at includes videos that you recorded for them. That’s amazing and I would absolutely love to provide that for a vet someday. I love social media marketing.

I'm not sure if I want to go into the veterinary field, wildlife field, or the environmental field. Either way I'm an animal and plant lover - and although I'm able to do things like physical care taking it's emotionally taxing on me. I prefer solitary jobs where I can use my mind to calculate data and solve problems. That's where I shine at.

So get into ag classes if you don’t have in your school than related classes! And talk to counselors about it I’m sure they would help you choose the best classes and pick great schools. Hi, I have a question! I'm a student studying prenursing but I wouldn't say it's my passion. I'm taking it because nursing is the only field I'm most familiar with through my parents. However, recently I've become interested in a career as a veterinarian instead. Not simply because I love animals (who doesn't?) but because I'm fascinated by them (their behavior, body structures/functions, etc.). *However* I'm not much of a pet owner. I grew up too poor to afford anything like dogs, cats, etc. I have bought the occasional goldfish or RES turtle before but nothing serious like a dog. Since I don't have much experience raising/caring for animals, would it be unrealistic for me to try to become a vet? Of course, it's definitely better to have experience dealing with animals but I will be doing volunteer work of course.

Naomi hi I live in the uk but I’m sure it’s universal! Getting into vetmed or vet nursing is more about practice experience gained and work ethic! In the uk to get into vet school you have to complete several weeks of work experience including in practice, equine and farm animal. For vet nursing at least 2 weeks in a vet practice. I would recommend getting tones of work experience in a range of settings including boarding kennels /cattery vets riding centres/schools. :) owning pets is definitely not a guarantee that you’ll get into the field or on a course so don’t feel disadvantaged! Good luck :)

I am not really educated in all the details of vet school, but I'm very interested in it, so I just have a few questions. What's the difference in a Veterinarian, a Veterinary Nurse, and a Veterinarian technician? How much schooling for each, and which has to euthanize the animals?
@pokemon9oct
@pokemon9oct 7 жыл бұрын
A veterinarian is a vet, they do surgeries, consultations and have a lot more legal rights to treating your pets than a vet nurse/tech, as nurses/techs cannot treat your animal without the vet having seen it first. They can dispense drugs, they keep the finances, they deal with the owners and they go on home visits. A vet nurse is the same as a vet tech, just a different name. Nurses do a lot of behind the scenes. They dose drugs, they moniter the animal whilst they are under anesthesia, they feed, water and clean the paitents, they take blood samples, they run lab tests for urine and blood, they clean, they take the dogs outside, they look after when an animal is boarding, they are in charge of the stock, (drugs, cleaning supplies, food, bandages, fluids etc) They are pretty much the working gears of a veterinary practice. Both have to euthanise animals, often a nurse is needed to assist the vet, either by holding the leg in which the catheter is in or actually putting the animal down themselves. I can't help with the cost, as it completely depends on where you live and where you go towards study. Hope I helped a bit! (Just to be clear I'm not a registered vet/vet nurse, but I am a VCA student and have worked in a practice for the past year)

How are you working in a clinic as a veterinary nurse as well as going to school to become one? I am confused how you are able to practice it without previous education
@ridexonxstars
@ridexonxstars 6 жыл бұрын
Meggy Peggy she is technically working as a vet assistant right now, but many clinics will teach you on the job. A license is not required in some states to work as a veterinary nurse, it just gets you a higher salary.

I LOVED this video. I really want to become a certified veterinary assistant (not a nurse or tech yet). Penn Foster has an online program but it is based in Pennsylvania (go figure) but I don't live there. Would it still be certifiable where I live? Another question I have is is there a minimum age requirement? I'm pretty young, but really passionate about animals and veterinary medicine. And last, any suggestions on other things I can do related to this field? My local vet clinic and a lot of other ones will not let me volunteer/shadow them for liability reasons. Thanks!

You can take the vet assistant program no matter where you live. And I believe you would have to be 18. Or at least graduated high school to get in the program.

Ignorant question: if you’re already working as a veterinary nurse why get a degree to be a veterinary nurse?
@madiadamkie6476
@madiadamkie6476 7 жыл бұрын
John Nozzi I don't know if this is the same for every state. But from my understanding Vet assistants and vet nurses are a little different. Vet assistants don't have a degree and can not do as much. Plus the pay is less. Vet nurses do have a degree and are allowed to do more as well as get paid more. I could be wrong. That's just what I understood.
@TheBirchFamily
@TheBirchFamily 7 жыл бұрын
You have to have a degree to be a licensed veterinary nurse or certified veterinary technician. If you don't have a degree you are a veterinary assistant. The majority of the procedures I am able to do is because I am working towards my degree. In some states you legally you can't without a degree. Also, the pay is better.

When I check the meaning of nursing is a health professional who goes to university for 4 to 5 years, to work with humans. Someone who studied microbiology, human anatomy, human physiology, psychology, infectology, mental health, pharmacology, epidemiology, nutrition, psychopathology, and every single pathology per age, etc, plus hundreds of hours in clinical practice in hospital, in every single area of medicine, surgery, pediatrics, mental health, ICU, anestesiology, etc. This vet nurses and dental nurses are just weird to me, never heard anything like that outside of USA, and I think is disrespectful to the profession, just trying to appropriate the term like that, it's terrible, why not vet tech? Like in most countries. Not saying your profession is not important, because obviously It is, I just dislike the wrong usage of the word because you are not a nurse.
