Great video! You gotta be comfortable with the uncomfortable stuff. Death, sickness, poop, vomit, blood, parasites, disease, angry clients, crying clients, out of control kids, getting mauled, getting bit, helping clients afford services (like a financial consultant), boring days at the clinic, cleaning the whole clinic when needed (some techs think it beneath them and not the "sexy" work), and so much more!!! Some days it's a total shit show...and I LOVE it! I thrive on the craziness. When the days are slow and we have cleaned everything completely is when it's the pits. Btw, you are never too old to be a vet tech. I went to school at 43, graduated, got state certified, and now working in a cross trained small general practice that does dental, surgery, appointments and some emergencies. Will be 49 this year, had foot surgery while employed at the clinic and back from medical leave...and kicking ass! Was an artist (with some odd jobs) before this. But, ALWAYS loved science...and gross stuff. Considered mortuary school before deciding on vet tech school. You can do it!!!

It's crazy because now a days in high school we have an agriculture department. And when you become a Senior you can take the veterinary medicine class where you deal with animals and veterinary stuff

Yes, yes! I completely agree! Volunteer or start off as a kennel assistant. I would never recommend someone go directly from high school to tech school without knowing what they are getting into. I have seen so many people regret this, come and go or panic because they are $10k in debt and they learned they can’t handle working in a clinic. And they spend 2+ years in school and that’s all they know.

I acually volunteered at my animal shelter and i delt with death, poop (a lot), sickness, and many many other things. I got to interact with all the animals and it was fun if you ignor all the bad. Being a vet assistant may not give a lot of money but if you enjoy the job than its worth it. Working at the shelter made me realize how much i love working with animals and how much interacting with them can teach you many things. 😁

I went to a county school, so I took Ap Bio, Bio, and anatomy, along with H Chem. But because I went to a County school we also had agriculture classes, so I got to take animal science and vet science!

I take agriculture class in my high school which I’m a FFA member so I would raise a lamb for like six months and learn things about my lamb and get my lamb ready for the fair to compete. That is one way of starting for being a vet tech in the future cuz since I would have some type of experience in livestock. I’ll be a senior in August and it would be my last year to raise a lamb and I wish to do it again each year cuz it’s such a fun experience. Advice: If you would want to raise a livestock animal check with your school and if they don’t have a class for that then join 4-H near you. P.S. It’s a lot of hard work and responsibilities so you have to take action and know what you’re doing.

Do you have any advice for work experience at a vet? What to expect? How to 'act or behave' at a clinic and What is it like? Thanks this would be a big help.

This video helped me a ton and reassured me that what I’m doing is correct - so thank you a ton!! When I was a freshman, I was so blessed to be given the opportunity of enrolling in a veterinary assisting program. It gave me the opportunity of learning everything in the veterinarian world & it also enabled me to volunteer in clinics. It definitely widened my eyes and I for sure want to pursue this type of career! I just recently “graduated” from it and now I’m a junior & a certified vet assistant! Now going into senior year next year, I plan to take AP Biology and Algebra 2. I’m so excited to graduate and continue my life and save a bunch of animals! I still have no idea if I want to be a veterinarian or a tech though. What made you decide between a tech & a veterinarian? Thank you for being amazing! ❤️❤️❤️

Vivian Tanner I'm in a vet assisting program at tarpon high. Our program is 4 year long. How intensive was the class?because honestly in hours we've done barely anything. Important stuff but it's like a study hall.but junior and senior year its double block so hopefully well be doing more. Worried I'll have to prepare for the exam myself with an online course or something.
@soupsoe6 жыл бұрын
DrumStick I was actually accepted into Tarpon’s vet program but I declined because it was too far away from my house. So I accepted something closer which was the program I just finished (Career Academies of Seminole). I really enjoyed the program. It’s a 3 year program and it’s split into levels. First yr is level 1&2, second yr 3&4, and the final year is level 5 and then what we call “directed studies”. This is when we do this online program where it basically refreshes you on everything we learned thru out the past 3 years and studies you for the final exam. (Which by the way was super easy and I stressed out for no reason!)
@soupsoe6 жыл бұрын
DrumStick also, starting around level 2-3 is when we have to call and apply to clinics to volunteer at. It’s required for my program to get a total of 250 volunteer hours in order to take the final CVA exam. It’s a lot of work but it’s totally worth it, in my opinion!

I just started high school and I already know I want to be a vet. But I have no idea how anything works after that. I kinda need someone to plan it out for me. I don't know if that makes sense. But like. What do I do after I graduate? What's graduate and undergraduate? How do I actually *become* a vet?

You should first shadow a vet to see if u truly like it and in college do prevet to get ur preques than animal hours and good grades

This answered so many questions!! Thank you so so much for this video...I'm a high school student really looking into veterinary medicine, and I also volunteer at a rescue/adoption center. I keep thinking there's more than I could do, but like you said, in high school there's not really much you can do because there's not the same flexibility as in a college. Just wondering, what did you major in at your two year college? Tbh that's what I plan on doing right out of high school and I would love to see a Q&A with more questions ❤️❤️❤️

I dont mind blood, and guts and all that. I ve helped out in the shelter and in a vet clinic for 2 weeks....and ive seen stuff....im fine with it though

I graduated high school in 2013 so 5years ago and right after high school I went straight to college to become a Vet Assistant but ever since I haven’t had any luck with getting a job as a Vet Assistant so I’ve just been doing other stuff so I’m 23 will be 24 in August so do you think I’m too old to go back to school to become a Veterinary Technician? Or to become a Veterinarian?
@TheBirchFamily6 жыл бұрын
I honestly believe you are never too told to follow your dreams. 23 is NOT old! You have plenty of time to become a veterinarian or veterinary technician.
@Midmists6 жыл бұрын
I was 24 when I got hired onto my first vet job as an assistant. Many clinics told me they didn’t want to hire me because I had no experience or I was second choice because someone else had experience. I am currently in school to become a license tech and I’m now 29. It is never too late. But I also learned I was asking for the wrong position to start off as. Even though I went to school to become an assistant and I had a few months of volunteering at a clinic, many clinics STILL wanted experience. It wasn’t until later I learned many clinics would rather have you start as a kennel assistant even if you went to school to be an assistant. Or at least, where I live.

How do you deal when you have to suggest euthanasia to pets because the owners can afford the treatment? my cat recently was diagnosed with squamos cell carcinoma, and also is infected with feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) this is because I adopted my cat when he was all grown up, I went to animal foundation to seek help and treatment for my cat for a lower price, cause vet can be really expensive, and the lady in reception only look my cat and told me that they can help and my cat has to be put down (she was not a veterinariam just a receptionist) I took my cat home and cry all day, i do really want to help my cat, but i dont have enough money but i will keep searching for and affordable vet, anyways my real question here is, does i am a bad person if they told me that i have to put down my cat because he can receive chemotherapy because he has FIV and i dont do it? My cat is sick but he is still acting like nothing is happenig, he eats very well, sleeps, play with me as always, so i cannot put in my mind the idea of putting him down.. i wanna know what do you think? should i keep fighting with him?
