How to tell if you have water in the gas tank. Well, the fact of the matter is, if you pump water in your fuel tank while at a gas station, you will know it within 2 miles of driving away.

Perfect visual of how quickly the water separates in fuel, I had no idea it was so fast. Also never occurred to me that the water could have gotten into the fuel while still on the truck. Great explanation and video.

Thank you, Robert, for educating folks on what happens when water gets in a fuel tank. It is good to know it is not necessary to drain the entire tank over a cup or so of water at the bottom of the tank. Cheers!

Thank you for the info. Lost my gas cap right before monsoon season here in Louisiana, and my car sounded and drove like it was dying. Putting heet and a piston ring sealant SEEMS to have worked wonders. I'm still going to go through the injectors and fuel rail to see if anything else needs to be tended to. Thank you for your insight, my friend. God bless you, and America. We're all just brothers and sisters trying to get by, and young people don't seem to get that. Thanks and God bless.

I had that issue with my car a few times. Id go get gas at this one place and sometimes it would be ok at first, then about a day or two later it would splutter, stall or even struggle to start up hot. Once it misfired so bad I couldnt go any faster than 45 mph. Pouring some heat in the tank would always fix it. Afterwards I just stopped going there and it never happened again.

This video is great! Thank you. During the winter I let my tank go almost empty, then added a 1/4 tank. All of a sudden the suv started to shudder going up hill around 20mph. I added 2 Iso Heet and a full tank of Mobil premium and was better in a few days. Now it is spring I notice that when the car starts to get about 1/4 tank it does not run as well. Is it the debris? I try to keep it over a 1/2 tank because of this with the premium that has detergents in it.

Hello Robert, I had and issue this morning. Yesterday I started my car up on a cold day and didnt let it run 2 minutes. Cut it off and the next morning it wouldnt start. Thought it was the timing chain. I read a post about cold starting car and not letting it run long enough before you turn it off can cause starting issues later on. Whats your take on this idea.

Hey Robert I want to drain the fuel tank of one of my late model Mercedes (2010). I'm going to be doing it not at the fuel tank itself but at the end of the fuel line, right before it attaches to the fuel rail of the engine. I'm either gonna be powering the fuel pump and letting it pump all the fuel out or sucking it using a pump at the fuel line tip. Will this be a good method to drain the fuel tank and completely get rid of old fuel and any water in the tank? Does the fuel pump reach the very very bottom of the fuel tank therefore evacuating ALL the liquid in the tank? Any help would be appreciated, thanks.
@RobertDIY
@RobertDIY 6 жыл бұрын
+Ethan Ward the sock should touch the bottom of the tank. The pump should get 95+% of the fluid out.

I managed Gas stations for years, how water gets in the fuel tanks at a station is due to the tanks sweating (above ground tanks can be worse than in ground), this gets worse the older the station gets due to tank degradation. Where i'm at in TN, it was allowed to have 1/2" maximum of water in the fuel tank. Anything over that, the water was required to be pumped out. Either the tanks had to be measured with a large measuring stick (old way) or a computer would print out every morning all the levels in all the grades. (Yes mid grade is simply a mixture of the Reg and Supreme) There are also filters in the pump to help keep the water from getting into someone's car, but again if a station is older, less maintained you are at a higher risk of getting water in your gas. I always try to get gas at the newest station, most maintained station.

@RobertDIY

E M I doubt that you have any because once you find out, it's to late. If you start the car and it pumps into the engine, the system will have to be flushed. If you think there is some in the tank and you have not pumped it into the motor, you can disconnect the fuel filter, turn the pump on (jump the relay or simple turn the key to run), and pump it into a container. Also, products like HEAT and STA-BIL displaces a little water/moisture.

ive had sporadic jerking under acceleration in my 2008 subaru outback, its like a momentary engine hestitation, a hiccup, seems like there deprivation of fuel ? i put new spark plugs in and that didnt fix it so im now suspecting that it could be something to do with fuel filter or possibly having some moisture in the lines ? would having a bit of water in the lines create this kind of momentary delay in the engine to fire and create a jerky response under accelertion ?

What problems can happen though, piston misfire? Car shuts down? I have a feeling the gas station where my neighbors and I buy our gas has water in their sumps, all sorts of cars on my block are having piston misfires sometimes they clear themselves up and other times it's replacing ignition coils, 5 cars on my street from different manufacturers have the same problem. Any speculation on how that could happen?

Should work immediately. If you have water in the lines, you may need to drive the car a few miles.

Hi Robert, (I hope you see this comment) Thanks for the information. I won’t get into details but I’ve been told by my dealership that my (new) 2019 vehicle (which is a hybrid), is filled with 50% water… causing all the recent *start issues. How could it possibly be 50% full of water?? 🙄

Hi +Robert DIY this is a great video thanks, can you tell me what would be symptoms of driving with contaminated fuel? Today I had my first ever trouble with my car (about 140k miles, Mitsubishi Galant 2.5 V6 petrol import) and I left the gas station, and within maybe 3 or 4 miles the car developed a very rough idle, especially slowing at traffic lights. The car began to shake on idle and 'coughed' or 'spluttered' as if it was misfiring, the idle got pretty bad and I turned to come home. The dash gave me the 'check engine' light and i slowly and gently drove the 20-25 miles home. When I got my car into my garage I noticed the splutter/misfire was random and didn't really have a pattern. There was heavy vibrations from the engine through the idle, it sounded like it was struggling to idle but was alright with a bit more revs, could this be contaminated/low octane fuel? Thank you for the video, it was very informative!
@RobertDIY

+Chris McCartney it could be contaminated fuel. Chances are you have a sensor that has randomly gone bad. I would have the system scan for its codes, and see if you can trace down the problem that way.

+Robert DIY thank you, I will check the sensors after work, going to give the car a full service and clean the MAF, throttle body and Idle sensors. Thank you! :-)

Thanks for sharing!! My wife purchased gas this past Sunday 2/14/16 from a place she doesn't ordinarily get it, didn't really start noticing a problem until Tuesday, 2/16/2016! Her check engine light was flashing, the car was hesitating/sluggish, and the engine appeared to be shaking slightly! Went to Autozone and O'reilly's and had it checked via ODB, no codes came up!! Purchased Lucas Fuel Inj/carb treatment, seemed to help temporarily, today back to same issue!! Dumbfounded as to what the problem could be, any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

I think it might be possible that my tank was sabotaged.I have a saturn ion. yesterday, Right after I left an ex's house, it started spitting and stuttering, and the engine light come on, then today I was going up a hill and it started doing it worse, almost to the point of shutting off. It settled down after I left out, but still shakes like hell when I stop. Code said cylinder misfire, I changed the spark plug and coil pack and new boots. Still sputtering, but to a lesser extent. Could it be water or salt in the tank?
@RobertDIY

Some cars have a fuel pressure test valve that you can use to drain some fuel out with. Or you may have to disconnect a fuel line to get some.
