9:00 FYI there is a small thing you might wanna know. Hyper-V is a layer 1 hyper visor like VMware ESXi (not VMware Workstation or player) while virtual box is a Layer 2 hyper visor like VMware Workstation. There is a small performance difference between the 2 because a layer 1 vm speaks directly to the hardware while a layer 2 first goes through the main OS before having the hardware connected to the VM

as someone who does IT, I think the two editions are really well named. Home edition is definitely the home edition - it's a great fit for the vast majority of people to use at home. Pro edition genuinely is pro - it's meant for businesses or for definite power user that just can't do with the home edition.
@SuperNGLP

As someone else who does IT, I also think so. I really like his approach to the topics. Everyone gets picked up from knowing nothing to „I understand what this thing does and what I could use it for.“. My thoughts always went „you could have added X and Y and technically Z is not that simple you need to think about B…“ No. He explains enough for everyone to get into the topic and explore the rabbit hole themselves and learn more. This could really spark an interest in IT in many people. Maybe some day, thanks to videos like this, we can stop asking: „did you try and restart the device?“

One feature I really like about pro (from several years ago; this may be different now) which I recommend people be really careful about before enabling: the ability to indefinitely delay Windows Updates. Remote Desktop is a fantastic program. I know of no other remote control software that works the same way. For example: -- You do not need a code, from the remote computer. As long as you have login credentials on the remote computer, you can login to that remote computer, with no assistance. -- When you login to that remote computer, that remote computer's screen locks. So no one at the remote location can see what you are doing. -- Whatever was running under your login at the remote computer will be sent to your local screen. -- You can choose to have the audio stay with the remote computer, and only have the video displayed on your local computer. This was a great feature for me, because I have a laptop feeding a DAC (digital to analog converter box, for music). I am using a short USB cable between the laptop and the DAC, because long USB cables will diminish the sound quality (long story). There is a reason that no long USB cables exist. But with a short USB cable, I could not have that laptop next to me (or on my lap). It had to be next to my DAC box. I ran an Ethernet cable from a laptop that I keep next to me, to the laptop that is connected to my DAC. Using remote desktop, I can control that computer as if it was the one next to me. And the digital audio feed remained with the remote laptop, feeding my DAC. That audio option was a remote desktop option -- one that I have not seen with any other remote control software. Also, I am averse to installing 3rd party software. In this day and age, it is hard to trust any closed source software. Nearly all of them seem to phone home (in a manner of speaking). Many of them nag you to upgrade. Some will not work if you cannot contract their permission server (which I have no need to do, because my laptop has no need to be on the internet (all of my music in on its internal SSD)). Remote Desktop took care of everything. It is a wonderful remote control program, included with Windows, that does not go through any 3rd party systems somewhere on the internet. If your computers are on your own local network, then your remote control session never sees the internet.

Found out they suspected me of using it in a commercial environment, but they wouldn't listen to me that my use-case is only at home through my phone and they wanted me to fork over all sorts of personal information, and I was having none of that. There is one major difference between RDP and the other options: RDP is a virtual desktop/session, the others mirror your console, the console being where you are with physical display/keyboard/mouse. There's pros and cons for each. Windows workstations only allow one active session at a time, so if you RDP into a machine that already has someone logged in at the console, you'll kick them off the console. If you are logging in as the same account they were on, you'll take over their session virtually. If a different account, their session will suspend much like it would with Switch User. This can cause problems if you want to share a screen with someone, though you can use Quick Assist with them. The alternatives, at least for most, only let you share the console with the other user if someone is already logged in. But then you are sharing the screen with them which could be what you want.

I use Parsec to remotely access my Windows 10 Pro desktop machine, because it's incredibly low-latency, and acts very much as though you're sitting right there at the keyboard. It does have a couple of quirks -- if there's no monitor attached to your computer it won't work, and if there's no mouse attached it will not let your local mouse remotely-control the machine's mouse-cursor. So it's no good for "headless" machines. But it's so low-latency that you can actually play videos or even games on your remote computer as if you're sitting right there. (It requires a very good GPU to do this, BTW.). So it might not work for everyone, but it's a very good alternative to Remote Desktop, nonetheless.

Funny, that you first use Group Policy Editor (which is a domain thing primary, as it applies to "domain groups", it is literally made to manage policies for groups of users or groups of computers, it is in the name), and domains - the absolute most important thing in a business - only very late o:O ... Let me tell you: in a company network, domains are a must. There is just no other option. There it is not just "worth it", it is necessary. Unless the IT guy wants to administrate every PC on its own which makes absolutely no sense at all. Pro stands for "Professional" which means "Business". (In fact for WIndows Vista "Pro" was named actually "Vista Business", but for Win7 they went back to "Professional" naming scheme).

Hey Thio! Great video as usual! Small question: Is there any reason as to why you chose TeamViewer as an RDP alternative rather than AnyDesk?

He could have picked from any number of similar RDP type solutions, TV and VNC are perhaps the most well known. Equally, AD has been a bit flaky recently, and free user accounts now seem to time out at 10 mins or less making it much closer to garbage...

Anydesk is a great alternative for remote desktop and even TeamViewer You can set it to auto start with the computer Make password for it so you can get un intended access Settings to optimize latency which do make a difference in slow connections Block user's input so that the controlled pc peripherals won't interfere with you And you can run it without installing it

Windows 11 Pro is worth it for Bitlocker, especially if it's a laptop/tablet. While most Windows mobile devices have Bitlocker enabled on Windows Home edition, it's usually limited and you can't edit it too much unless it's a Pro device.

If your needs are barebones, then Home is fine. Check your e-mail, type a letter, print a page, watch KZbin, etc. If you do more than that, like, Entertainment, Gameplay, Programming, Video & Photo editing, than Pro is a must, no question. If you spend less than an hour or two a day on your computer, then home is for you. Funny thing is the "Hour or two" people are usually the one's who've bought those ready made computers with the OS pre-installed anyway, so depends on how much you spent to which version you get.

Even if you are a small business, please buy computers with pro on them trust me, it will save you money in the long run. My boss expanded the business slightly (still only 5 machines) and I had to inboard everything and set it up how she liked it. She probably paid me more to mess around with the home computers than if she got pro where it would have taken me a tenth of the time.

You can buy a grey-market Windows 10 or 11 Pro OEM version pretty cheap. However, if you ever need to reinstall, it may not work and you may need to buy it again. However, my prebuilt desktop came with Windows 7 Pro and I paid through the MS Store for the upgrade to Pro for my Windows 10 laptop. Also, if you buy the cheap OEM Pro version, you may have to jump through some hoops to get Home to upgrade. Once upgraded, be sure to make an image backup to avoid having to buy another cheap grey-market copy.

Imagine paying for an operating system which holds more features hostage behind a higher paywall as well as requiring you to login with a proprietary online account and uses telemetry to scan and upload your personal data for advertising or other unknown reasons. I use Arch btw.

I still have a stack of pro volume licenses from windows 7/8 days when I was a network admin so I just install Windows 10 with that key on all of my systems (currently 4). As long as I can still upgrade to newer windows versions I'll probably never run out of licenses. Unfortunately Windows seems to be increasingly more of an advertising platform but I digress. I like the network sharing feature in pro better. And I'm a developer so experimenting with sandboxes etc is handy. Isn't there a limitation in Home for the number of discrete processors you can run and amount of memory? Yes, home 64 cores and 128GB ram, pro 128 cores, so if you want to use an amd thread ripper or intel xeon with lots of cores you'd better get pro. I'm still at 24 cores (13900K) so no problems there.
