My dog is the most distracted son ever. 😢 I’m so frustrated with it. People come over all he wants to do is play 😢. It’s easy to do this when she isn’t focused on anything else. No one is around you and no one is distract her. I would like you to do this when there are distractions around.

Thank you for addressing dogs that are not food motivated🙏 its been a huge problem for me to find content that covers some kinds of situations such ad outside focus when your dog doesnt really care about food! Please make more of this! ❤️

You could try with toys, petting, or even verbal praise (in a squeeky tone). My dog is 10 years old, and is not very food (or toy) motivated, but she looooves when you talk nice to her and praise her. So I have been doing shorter training sessions, maybe 5 minutes each time, and mixing different food treats, and lots of praise. It's been working much better for her. You could maybe try different things and see what works best for your dog :) Good luck!

Thanks so much for a video! I have two dogs in my house: 10 weeks border collie puppy and 10 years old labradoodle. As I understand from the video, I should keep my older dog away from my young puppy to make sure I have her undivided attention. Until what age of the puppy should I separate them? I do see a value in them playing together and puppy can learn some “dog” behaviour

So our dog kinda hyper focuses on us in the house but outside he rarely checks in especially if there are distractions and food doesn't seem to get his attention when distractions are around. He's a 10 month old border collie and his indoor train work has been going well its just outside things seem over simulating for him but we live in a flat so we NEED to take him out to go do his business but there are other dogs living in and around our flat and sometimes they are out at the same times I take him, which makes him very distracted. Any ideas how I can get more focus from him during walks, we are currently working him with a gentle leader to curb his pulling which as made walking more enjoyable already but his lack of focus makes it hard to work with when distractions are around.

I wish my dog was this motivated. I know it's my fault but she also doens't like toys. I tried every dang toy in existence and she has no desire for any of them. She's always disliked squeaky toys since she was a puppy and so i tried non squeaky toys, tennis balls, tug toys, ropes, bones, etc. She only ever liked ONE toy she got for christmas. A pink santa boot. She chewed it up and got bored of it. Never liked another again. I have beef liver treats and she is like, "yes, i like but not enough" it's so strange.

Hi Ken, I'm getting my first dog next week and I've been doing a ton of research but I need to make sure that I'm making the right decision here. I'm getting a border collie but I hear its not the best dog for an inexperienced owner. What do you think?

I need help specifically with teaching my dog to maintain his training through a whole walk. I’ve been training him to not pull on the lead since he was 9 weeks old and he’s now over a year. He understands he’s supposed to walk beside me but he forgets literally 2 seconds after we start walking. So my walks are start stop start stop start stop. He can’t maintain his focus through a short walk even to go to the bathroom without me having to stop and reset him and I don’t know how to teach him that he needs to never pull on the lead. He thinks it’s normal now to stop every 2 seconds because that’s all I’ve ever been able to do.

I use to have the same issue. It was corrected with..I think the traininer called it negative reinforcement. Which basically meant taking away something the dog wanted, in this case to go forward until she behaved appropriately. Short version, everytime she started to pull, I would not stop walking. I would immediately turn around and walk the opposite direction. When she behaved, we would go the direction she wanted again. Other great focus tools are teaching your dog "watch" and "Touch". Both great commands that are used on service animals and really bring focus back once they master them.

Great videos, but if my 3 month old golden was as well-behaved as your dogs before they're even trained that would be a huge improvement. And that water bowl suspended on the crate door wouldn't last 3 minutes.

I rescued a 3 year old female part hound and pit bull in April. She will go up the stairs but refuses to go down the stairs.. I have tried various treat motivated efforts and she still refuses. Can dogs have a height phobia? Any recommendations are welcomed.

My dog has been like this too. She's an Aussie so they're typically "Velcro" dogs and love to be constantly near. A good piece of advice I've been given is to reward for moments of calm. For instance, I quietly drop a piece of kibble whenever she voluntarily lays down to nap and say, "Good settle." You can also teach a "place" or "on your bed" command, where they stay until released. This helped our dog learn that she doesn't always have to be near me and focused on what I'm doing. She's chilled out a lot. I've also had to work on being more boring when we're not in training sessions, haha! Good luck on your training journey!

What do you do if your dog Won't Work For ANY Food? My dog will only eat enough to stay alive. I tried EVERY Brand of training treats and kibble. He WILL NOT do diddly for ANY Food OR Toys. But praise is a Whole Other Thyng! Praise him like he won a contest and he does better. But he's Still VERY Distractable. I hired a "professional trainer" who only used treats, it didn't work. She skipped with our $600.00!

Yikes. That sucks. That’s the worst part about food based rewards, not all dogs want food. The solution is... don’t use food. Physical, play, or vocal praise is usually my go to reward. I worked for over 2 years in basic dog training classes... we didn’t use any food, our students always saw improvement.
