I worked 32 years in the school system and we had a morning where the electric was out and all the kids were coming in late. I had the same situation at my house but got dressed by candle light and stuck my toothbrush in the rain to wash it off and away I went. Not 1 minute late. People also lack common sense and that you can't buy.

The longest I have ever been without electricity is two weeks but never missed any work. Cooked on a camping stove the whole time and got water out of the stream. It can be done with God's help 🙏

When my ex husband and I moved to rural Maricopa, we were on 3 1/3 acres with water only. We had to put in our electric pole for the power company to hook us up. And we had to call the gas company and have the house converted to propane with a 100 gallon tank installed 100 yards from the house. We started with propane first since the ex made a homemade BBQ outside and we could cook and heat with propane on the inside. So it was a few months before we got our electricity hooked up. In the meantime, we bought a windup alarm clock that ran off batteries and that thing kept us on time for work for almost 3 months. When there was a storm and the electricity went out, we would sit in our outdoor chairs in the cool night and look at the stars. We never lost our patience when the electricity was out. It only lasted a couple hours each time. Most of us can go without electricity if we have to.

My husband and I lived 4 years completely off grid on a mountain. I did not work outside the home during that time, but my husband did. It was quite an adjustment, but very rewarding. We learned a whole lot about everything, but especially really appreciating the difference between necessity and convenience/luxury. We heated our little cabin with a wood stove also used for some cooking. Cooked a lot outside over an open fire. About 2 years into our adventure, we did buy a propane cook stove, refrigerator, and a small wall heater to help supplement the wood stove. One thing I found particularly helpful was to remember “the power of 3”. Three working sources of heat/energy, 3 sources for water, and 3 sources for food preservation and cooking. The main reason is to be prepared if one source should become unavailable or breaks down, etc. then you always have backup.

Brings back so many happy memories! My grandmother took care of me while my mother worked back in the 50’s. She had a big wood cook stove in the kitchen and a little pot bellied stove in the living room. She had a wringer washing machine on the back porch. She had a garden in the summer and blackberries. I used to help her string beans after we picked them. She cooked green beans with potatoes on her stove. When she wasn’t looking, I would sneak the potatoes out of the pot! Delicious! Thanks for helping me remember some sweet times with my granny!

My Great Grannymaw did the exact same things!!! But she had the wringer type washing machine in the little side room where she took her bath in the wash tub!! Wood stove to cook on and the pot bellied stove in the living/bedroom area!! She took care of me for my Mama to work and gr. Grannymaw ironed our clothes !!! She and my mom could iron the best of anyone !!

Oh yes, there was only a cold water faucet and a slop jar or we called it the pee pot !! Outside a ways was the out house ! It had two places to use!! Kept the girls together !!

I wanted to share something with you two. It is Oct 6,2022 at 10am and I came across you showing how to make wash soap and Olivia Waltons old fashion cake and more. I sit here because I feel so down and alot on my plate. One my Daddy who is sick with cancer and mama sick to and just watching you two reminds me of them so much just good country people, hunting, fishing, baking and so much more. I put your recipe for wash soap down and going to try it. Anyway I just felt like you two are such a blessing to me today and always, it's nice to hear that talking sound of pure country and seeing Mr. Ralph getting in the video. My tip to anyone preparing for emergencies is to know how your supplies work BEFORE you need to use them. Those oil lamps are a great resource until it’s pitch black out and you have no idea how to light them!! As always, I really enjoy your videos Miss Lori (and Mr. Brown)!!

My mother’s parents lived off the grid like you they had a wood 🪵 stove a well with a bucket 🪣 an outhouse toilet 🚽. My brothers 👦🏽👦🏽 and sister 👧🏽 and me 👧🏽 we❤loved going to visit our grandparents 👵🏼👨🏼‍🦳they had pigs 🐖 & chickens 🐓 we liked feeding and watching them they had a garden 🪴 too. I remember the galvanized tubs 🛁 to bath in and the old ringer washing machines also the old rub boards to wash clothes and the clothes line to hang out the wash. Country life is the best wholesome healthy natural way to live like our ancestors. ❤ I miss that childhood time ❤ I am working on living off the grid…God bless us all 🙏

We've lived 8 years without being tied to the power grid on our remote Alaskan homestead. I'm with you, there is so much joy in growing your own food. We live in Texas and preserved the 2021 ice storm. These hand warmers that my husband had bought saved the day. The electricity would be off for hours and then come on an hour. We were always out of water because the pipes busted in the kitchen. This went on for a week. We had neighbors that would bring us jugs of water. We filled the bathtub with snow to flush the toilet. We've learned a lot since then. Praise the Lord for helping us and neighbors that helped us. I'm enjoying listening to y'all's program today. Glad you are feeling better. God bless you both ☝️🙏😊

In 2019 I moved from Colorado TO California to be near my kids, for some unexplainable reason I went on an heirloom seed-buying binge my kids questioned my sanity, I am sure Baker Creek appreciated my many orders. While in Calif I was constantly on the search for a state to move to, I ended up purchasing a property on the surface of the sun in Arizona I always said God knows my need and he will choose the State I need to move to I cashed out 2 acres ordered a 12x40 weather king cabin made by the Mennonites and will be 100% off-grid again my kid's question my sanity the younger generations have no vision, I keep hearing mom you're too old to live off-grid and homestead I would ask them how did the pioneers survive? my family came from Germany and Russia they had a homestead my Grandmother retired at 105. Since I was 8 years old, I have craved a homestead and now I have one I am sure my kids will move in on me when stuff hits the fan.+

Sounds like you have a great location, and a great plan! Not sure how "old" you are, but I'm 62, and by myself, just getting the ball rolling to do the same thing. Just found the land in southern Missouri, and hope to get there, to live, by end of the year, but things the way they are, that may not even be soon enough! I will probably end up with some similar shed to cabin conversion, just to save money for the well, and a small amount of solar power. Blessings!

I knew a gentleman who at 84 moved off grid and built a small stone cabin. Some years before had previously been wood cutting with my husband and a 3rd person had a truck with a battery that always went bad. So the jumper cables were hooked up from our truck to his and was running building up a charge and they were taking a break before time to head home. Walter was still afield when he saw our truck had come loose from the wheel blocking and was starting to roll down the hillside toward a 6ft. drop-off. That elderly gentleman ran across the clearing and opened the passenger door and managed to hit the brakes before it would have gone over the rocky drop. When he moved out to that property off grid we went to visit him. As we were leaving I told my husband " So Walter isn't only not afraid to die, he's also not afraid to live."

We're off grid too have been for almost 18 years, love it!! 10km from town, in countryside, house runs like it's on the national grid! Wifi microwave fridge freezer etc runs just great, have two lithium batteries and 8 solar panels, absolutely brilliant, have garden and fruit orchard. Love it here. I have two solar ovens. They work great. As long as you can see shadows, even on a partly sunny day, it will get hot enough to cook. Food cooks starting at 180 degrees.

So glad your feeling better, I have tried to prepare the best I can . My husband has a lvad which is basically a heart pump he has lived with this for 11 years by the grace of God . He has to have electricity to live so we have a solar generator and a generator . I also have a wood furnace and a gas fireplace . We have 3 acres in the country. Im 71 so do all of it by myself . Jesus helps me everyday.Im so thankful!

In my years of canning and preserving, there are always those jars that have a cravk or chip. They are no longer appropriate for canning, but I keep things like matches, bandages, coffee filters, milk filters, spices, even seed storage.

I have a 5 gallon bucket that’s never been used with anything but water and soap and I drilled a hole in the top to it that I put a brand new toilet plunger handle through, and I plunge the clothes as though it’s an agitator with soap in it, and then do the same thing for the rinsing cycle. It works great.

I’m a former city girl who wanted to move to the forest. 4 months ago I did just that with my mom of 83 and two special needs children. I live in a forest in Oregon and we have a house generator. Most everyone around us have generator of some sort. As long as I have generator I can cook anything in an electric skillet. Our power goes out often. Mt Hood.

Ms. Lori, call me crazy, but when Katrina came and we went weeks without power and no phones, I loved the family time, and the neighbors came together and visit. I remember the way my grandparents did things. We are so spoiled we need to come down from that horse. Our kids will be the ones to suffer the most because they don't have a clue. Will I miss a lot of conveniences, yes! but will be together with family and God. So glad you're doing better.

I came across this video & it caught my attention IMMEDIATELY & I just sat here smiling the entire time so I just subscribed and am excited to watch many more. My comments are endless cuz I could relate to nearly everything I saw in the video. My grandparents raised 9 children in a little old farm house using a wood cook stove for heat, making hot water & all the cooking. My mother was their first born in October 1936 so she's about to be 86 yrs old...and I absolutely love asking her questions about living at the farm. She has told me that they used the outhouse, no indoor plumbing, no electricity , no central heat or AC up until she was 18. She married at 19 & THEN my grandparents installed a kitchen sink, 1 indoor toilet that I clearly remember it being in what I would call a closet...which was located in the kitchen...I remember that it was so weird to use when we visited; but, it was definitely better than going to the outhouse containing spiders & smell in there LOL and if u had to go after dark I remember being scared to death the boogie monster would jump out from the dark & get me. My 2nd takeaway was ur coffee grinder. My grandfather was a collector of grinders & when he past away & all my aunts & uncles were going thru the house, barn and 2 detached frame structures....guess houw many grinders he had there??...From the smallest 5" tall to around 4 or 5 FEET tall.....hundreds of them perfectly on display upon shelves from wall to wall and floor to ceiling, ALL pristine & u definitely could see his passion for coffee grinders. Well, I'll shut up now. Too much typing & screen time; but, I just had to stop in to say "Hi" & complement ur vidwo & thank u for a trip down memory lane. When u said u were "fixin to" ....LOVED IT cuz I dated a young man from Louisiana & a true southern gentleman who often said those word ....too cute

On laundry : DETERGENT ! not soap like you can make at home. Detergent stays in water better where soap gets "stuck" in the fabrics hence the need for scrubbing and bashing pre washingmachines. Detergent works in cooler water that is just agitated (shaking/stirring) every so often. Plunger with some holes in it works. Plastic barrel you can close waterproof works (rol it back and forth a few times every 15-30 minutes). Time and soaking does most of the work. It also keeps your clothing from wearing so fast, modern fabrics are not made for the "abuse" that is old fashioned scrubbing on a washboard. Wringer though is gold when you need to handwash. Smooth post in the ground kan help you wring large pieces of fabric, but otherwise wringer is way easier than twisting it by hand.

My top tip is to keep a list of all your supplies,and where they are kept. If you dont have to dig into emergency supplies for months its easy to forget where everything is when you need it. I have a notebook labeled STORES where everything is listed. If I use something I cross it off the list. Also handy if you are away and someone else is in your house,they can simply consult the book if theres a situation going on.

When I was young, with my first child and husband and in college, we were poor. I bought a new toilet plunger and I washed me cloths in my bathtub. Back then I could wring out my cloths with my hands. I am now in my 60's with my husband. I would again wash and rinse my cloths in the tub and buy a wringer from Lehman's and hang the cloths to dry in my wood room or laundry room, which are attached to our old house. Our winters are very wet in Western Oregon so an outside cloths line does not work for us. Where there is a will, there is a way.

Washboard and a bar of the old sunlight soap cleans clothes better than 2 runs in an automatic washer 👍. I live as rustic as can be. After a house fire- I bought just a small camper to come with my dog when she hit heet coz my sons dogs got very vocal and having a landlord for the first time I wasn’t wanting a noise complaint. house fire was March 2022, grabbed the first place that allowed dogs so they’d let my son out of the hospital,, ( he’s a breeder and has 3 huskys- I have one ) Bought the camper May 2022 and 😇 STILL here. Just so nice being home I can’t leave. I prayed many times for guidance and strength and I LOVE the full time rustic ways. Lived here 40 years,, set back in the woods, trout in the Brook 🥰 and all the space my Sorcha needs to run and play. LOVE your channel. I had an old grinder that attached to my table, it survived the fire though black and the smooth wood on the handle burned off 😢 but working on restoring it.

I also recommend everyone get a Berkey water filter. They can actually filter your pond water. I use mine in the city, given water quality leaves much to be desired. I LOVE it!

First time viewer - wonderful video. Praying for your health & strength. I'm in rural California and have dealt with the winter outages for decades - now we're learning to deal with the "shortages" in summer the last few years. I got me a tiny cabin, tiny woodstove for warmth, propane stove/oven for cooking, hand-pump for the well, and plenty of lamps/candles. My mom used to have my Dad take the ringer washer outside when she was canning or freezing carrots. She cut off the stems and roots and washed the carrots in it for a long time. They rubbed together and peeled themselves. She then ran them through a rinse after draining the water. She did huge batches of carrots this way.

This is a important video Lori, after Katrina we were out of lights 28 days. We are old school and was prepared the best we could. Now the ground has been so saturated with rain for months. If a hurricane comes the trees would fall so bad. Thank God right now they are turning back out the opposite direction. We are still a blessed people. I just came across this video today. I've never seen your content before and I love it so much!!!! 🥰 I wish we were neighbors. Would be so nice to have a canning buddy and my husband would love hanging out working with your husband! We are 38 & 40 years old and don't really "fit" into our own generation too well. Although that can be quite the blessing sometimes 😉😂 You wouldn't believe the amount of jeering we get doing gardening , canning, home cooking (we rarely eat out or do fast food), hunting, foraging, preserving, etc. just general things that used to be of the norm all because society has moved on without those skills. I wish they would come back as a norm but I think it would take a catastrophe to see people get back to it and even then they would only do it out of necessity and not out of choice. I got covid around July 11th and my cough is pretty much over. So that would be about 7 weeks. I took severe Nyquil to keep the cough suppressed and Ricola cough drops and keeping the cough as quiet as I could seemed to help me. I've accumulated several different modes of cooking with Butane, propane, wood, charcoal briquettes AND a big Ole Fire-pit. Oh, and a solar oven. This should cover things for awhile. . . I hope. I bought OXO Good Grips when I was young and I'm thankful I always had a great jar and can opener for now. They last and they work. I was told at a pretty young age to plan as though you might one day be handicapped or old. So, I built the houses with double doors and extra wide doorways and everything else. In Louisiana we have power outages during hurricane season and typically it’s the heat that is an issue during power outage. Also one thing many people might now know or consider.. power outage means credit cards are worthless if you need to go to a store for supplies. Keeping cash is a great tip! Also many people think they can charge their phones in their car.. in Louisiana after a hurricane hits getting gas is a major ordeal.. you can spend hours in lines and many times the gas stations run out of gas. The Solar phone chargers or a necessity if you want to have your phone working. Sometimes we lose cellular service after hurricane for weeks too so they want to scout out where a payphone might be or if you know someone with a landline maybe that could be used. After Katrina family members were separated and had no way of getting in touch with each other and it was very stressful

My mom and grandma dug a pit, lined it with large rocks from the creek, and topped it with a grate. They built a fire, used two galvanized tubs, one for hot water wash, one for hot rinse and then another tub for cold rinse , then they were hung on the line. The pit was also good for canning outside without heating up the house.😮

You definitely want to be careful when using rocks from constantly wet areas- rivers, creeks, even a dry creekbed can be dangerous. Water gets into the rocks, and when you heat the rocks, the water expands and the rocks can shatter into shrapnel. Might as well be a grenade.

Sharing a couple of projects I've done. Get some "light anywhere matches", wrap them in cotton balls (or those square cotton makeup remover pads), coat them with melted wax and you'll be sure to have dry matches. I used muffin tins with liners and filled them with wood chips. Then, I poured melted wax over them. I stored all these in bottles. Three years later they are still in perfect condition for when I need to use them. Hope this is helpful. *I ran across these ideas on survival videos!*

Wood chips and even dryer lint are good choices. Shredded paper doesn't work as well. I buy candles at Thrift stores, and even at Dollar Tree to use for this. If you go to your local pharmacy, sometimes you can get them to give you a few large medicine bottles with caps for free (just depends on the pharmacy). If so, you can get 10 to 12 tea lights in one, depending on the thickness. This is a good way to store them, and to keep them in an emergency kit without them melting all over everything. 😊

I am so glad you are feeling better. I had to laugh at your title! My "Homestead" consists of a small 2 bedroom apartment on the second floor of a building. Unfortunately it is all electric and I can't afford something like a Mr Buddy indoor heater plus propane is illegal to use in my apartment. I have done a lot of research on heating in the winter season and do have a small tent and a sleeping bag. If the power goes out and stays out I can pitch a tent in my living room which is WAY easier to heat up than the room would be. I could survive but whether I would be comfortable is another matter; lol. Thankfully East Tenn doesn't get the bad winters. I have many of the kitchen items you showed and I would add an old fashioned egg beater to that list! Wish I still had my grandmothers!!! Wonderful information!!

It seems to have aged me about 5 years. I am nearly 70, but still canning, drying, and hanging clothes out on an old line. I have an old wash tub, for chickens, or hog boiling or clothes. I have even cleaned it with lime to sterilize, then used it to can with!

Hello Miss Lori! I always feel better whenever I spend time with you in the kitchen and just chatting. I’m glad you’re feeling better now. We all, me, hubby, all the kids, got that Covid all at once about 3 weeks ago. We are all doing well with. Our little 8 yr old granddaughter was able to finally get back in school and is so happy to get to see her friends every day. As for doing without electricity, we encounter that after most hurricanes here in south Florida. Done without it for over 3 months after Hurricane Andrew in ‘92. S we have all of the things we need, but recently we went one step further. We are going Solar! So we are excited to have a lower power bill and even have some to sell back to the power company. We will be investing in batteries to store the excess electricity as well. I have learned that there are several things I need to get by without power. A hand can opener, for sure. Batteries for flashlights. Bleach, water purifying tablets if you have city water, matches, hand sanitizer, toilet paper or rags for that, towels for drying dishes, hands and faces, a squeegee to get water out of your house if you lose your roof (essential!), and everything that you mentioned in your video. I give thanks every time I think of you. Bless you and Mr Brown. May you stay healthy and safe. Too many of us need your calm ways and your knowledge about the old ways. 💖💖❣️❣️

My kids and I were at home and my husband was working whenever we lost power. He found downed trees on every route as he tried to get home to us, and eventually had to turn around and go to a hotel for the night. We have electric central heat, but thankfully we had kerosene heaters in the basement for times when temps fell below freezing for several days. I knew I couldn't heat the whole house with that little heater so I took blankets and covered all the door ways in our living room and we all slept on couches and in chairs. I ran water for flushing the toilet into the bath tub in case the pipes froze, and filled containers for drinking. I had candles and old lanterns passed on by family for light. The excitement of it all was an experience we'll never forget! We heated beanie weenies and warmed water for instant hot cocoa on the kerosene heater before we snuggled in. It was noon the next day before my husband could get to us. Thankfully we could afford to spend a week of that time in a hotel as we searched for a generator. As you can imagine every one was in search of the same item, and they were sold out for days. Bless you and Mr Brown for urging folks to prepare. Times are changing quickly and I pray for folks decernment. God speed.

I'm not much of a coffee drinker...but I DO drink tea. I'm not ready...yet...to deal with no electricity, but, I'm working on it. I have a sewing machine that doesn't require electricity. I haven't had an electric can opener in MANY years! I have an electric washer, but, that is on my 'to do' list. I TECHNICALLY live in a city, but, one day I hope to move my homestead. I'm learning to farm, so I'm working on that self sufficiency, I still have to be able to go into town. I mainly stock up on items I'm not yet able to produce myself. I took some sewing classes at Joann's to learn how to sew before I got sick, and I'm now getting back into it. I'm planning on taking some sewing classes to become a lot more self sufficient. I do a LOT of reading and I have my own library of books right here. I am fortunate in one regards, my furnace REQUIRES electricity and methane, but...the way I'm fortunate is that the weather here, it gets chilly, but, it doesn't freeze anymore like it used to. Maybe 2 or 3 degrees. The thing I really DON'T like is when it gets hot! If it's cold, there is something I can do about it...dress warmer. But, when it's 35 degrees, there really isn't much that can be done, particularly on a humid day. And...you have to go out and work on the farm. I'm planning on making a root cellar.

I'm so glad you're feeling better! We've been through ice storms, blizzards, hurricanes, etc. over the years and power outages have consistently taught me new things each time. We have a generator and some fuel ~ not enough to run it constantly, but to keep the freezer at temp for several weeks. For lighting we have candles, oil lamps, solar camping lanterns, plus flashlights and headlamps. For heating we have a wood burning stove (not nearly as nice as yours, but we can cook and bake with it, and it has a water tank to keep water heated), as well as a spare kerosene heater. In addition to the wood stove we also have an outdoor brick grill that we built, a small rocket stove, and a solar oven. I have far more non-electric kitchen gadgets than electric ones, including all sorts of peelers, strainers, presses, etc. for canning, dehydrating, making cider, meat grinders, etc. Except for days when my RA is acting up, I prefer them over the electric. We have even more non-electric tools in the shop. I have a tub that is similar to yours for laundry as well as a small hand spinner version and probably enough soap/borax/washing soda to leave some to my children. I've also re-stocked our board games that we had gotten rid of once the children were grown, added some new ones, and have plenty of raw materials for hobbies and crafting on hand. We finally installed a hand pump on our well, and all of us are comfortable using a composting toilet to cut back on the amount of water needed for flushing. The best thing to do is take note of things your family does every day that require electricity and then look for alternatives that don't require it. If you have children, especially if they are used to having electronics available all day, you will have to get pretty creative at finding substitutes that will keep them content. My husband and I are both gamers, so some of the newer games I bought are RPG type games since that is what we both like. We have a larger library that we've collected over the years filled with how to, novels, history, and reference materials. We keep simple foods on hand that can be simmered on that wood stove ~ or outside on the grill if it is summer. What we have is tailored to our lifestyle, and what you put together should reflect your own individual likes and needs. One thing I do recommend is that everyone should buy a tent that is large enough for their family. If the power goes out in the winter, set up that tent in a large room of your home. It will keep body heat in and keep both children and elderly family warmer than just bundling up if you have no other heat source you can use.

Some time ago I asked you about lids and you suggested Forjars. I ordered them from US (I am in Italy) and I have been canning like crazy since they arrived! Tomatoes, green beans and lemon (after watching your video!), chicken broth , beef broth , turkey broth, turkey vegetable soup, pork chunks and beef chunks. My grandfather had a farm in southern Illinois and my grandmothers on both sides canned a lot, so I guess you could say it's "in my blood"! I still want to do some beans, but will take a break and do some dehydrating. I live out in the country and the nearest supermarket is about 20 miles away, so having some canned food in the pantry is very useful! Thanks for your suggestions and I just love your channel.

I don’t know if your canner is a pressure cooker or not but I do hope that you are going to buy a recipe from a canning book. Because many of the foods that you mentioned can cause poisoning if it’s not processed right. I can for years even meat. You do need a pressure canner for meat. You can order them online. Please be safe when you open out only when the steam is totally gone out of the little pressure hole. Also I always let the pressure canner get cold. Then I would open it. The reason why I’m telling you this was that my cousin got burned severely.

My canner is a a Presto Pressure canner and I have been following the instructions in the USDA Complete Guide to Home Canning (2021 print) as well as the All New Ball Book of Canning and Preserving. I've watched a ton of basic tutorials that have been of tremendous help as well.

I live in a retirement apartment that is only electric. We do not have backup generators nor can we have any auxiliary type of heat. I’ve read to put a pop up tent and sleeping bag on your bed. The tent conserves body heat.

The older we get, the harder it is to kick some of this stuff. I didn't rest enough this last round and relapsed. So glad you are feeling better. We have prepared in a lot of ways. So glad ur better. I was raised without electricity cooked on wood stove had oil lamps and had a spring where we got water. Its not real difficult if u know what to do. I live in florida where hurricanes are a way of life and we have to be prepared for the worst. Being prepared is key.

I use propane to heat as well as two modified rocket stoves and a couple of large ceramic heaters These are all independent of power. I re use my great water and I store water. My state will probably ban fireplaces and wood stoves unless the are “no pollution”. I can and dehydrate food. I also smoke meat and grow salad fixings under lights indoors. I live in an apartment. A wonder washer works great for our laundry I am a senior citizen

I’m glad you’re feeling better. You still look pretty tired so take care still and continue to rest up. I had an awful bug this last week I could barely get up and walk around I was so weak and my body ached so bad . I to tested negative for Covid I guess there’s another bug around. Finally today I feel a little better. I just love you two, and love your channel I’ve watched every video and have been watching for about 3 years . You have made me feel better when I’ve been down and I appreciate you for that. Thanks again
