Thought provoking and came at just the right time for me. My high drive dog just doesn’t fit into the training culture of the class she is in alongside five low drive dogs. Mine won’t lay calmly and ignore the others, yet. So she is sent to the corner by the teacher. I understand she can’t be allowed to disrupt the others but this vid makes me realize I am probably in the wrong class for my dog's personality type and stage of development. Thanks for helping me see this!

Thank you so much for this video. This saved us from a terrible trainer who was very strict on only using positive reinforcement, but at the same time she made my dog work through his frustrations and had to ignore him until he was silent, while taking a step back would be so much better. Luckily, we were only 4 weeks in, so I really hope he hasn't been too damaged.

Susan, I'm so glad you made this video. I thought I was an amazing dog trainer and then I got Ivan. He's actually the reason I started home school the dog last year around this time. You see I never had a high drive dog before. I'd had plenty of boxers but they were a walk in the park compared to Ivan. Your programs have been a life saver. Ivan and I have a really strong bond now and he's my buddy. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for helping me to understand my dog and his needs ❤

I really enjoyed this podcast. I have working border collies - as in livestock work (we live on a ranch). Also trial occasionally . I have a young dog that I am currently training. He's very talented, and not over-aroused, but I want to learn how to best care for my working dog's emotional self as well as his herding behaviors, so I am watching many of these pod casts. I keep a training diary. I do remind myself of training "progress" indicators in my diary, but I also use this as a way to improve MY performance and training. I record every session. I watch my voice and movements. And I seek to improve my own interactions with my dogs each timeI go out. And every entry in my diary ends with the statement: Make sure Glen (young dog's name) understands how much you love and appreciate him. :) So I really like your list, especially the last one about loving your dog.

The videos of Momentum are a wake up call for us amatours on how we let our expectations and lack of understanding get in the way of what our dogs are able to achieve. I recently joined Recallers and other of your programs, I love your approach and the clarity, and even though I'm just in the begining of the journey, I can say it has already completely changed my relationship and connection with my dogs (my 3 dogs sends you their best regards!!). Hi!!! Had a big win today with our Moose. I enrolled in Recallers to help us build our Moose confidence and other habits which I know we contributed a lot, listening to Susan made it really clear. Just this morning while we're having breakfast, I tipped off our tooth pick jar and it went all over the floor. Moose normal reaction will be running towards what ever we drop and then guard, nipped and sometimes growls at us if we try to correct him. So we have to do a a lot of animated action just to distract which becomes his cue later on. Today!!!! It is completely different. When the tooth pick went over the floor, Instead of pushing him away. I stepped on it, he still runs towards it and try to grab but I said mine Moose (in a calm voice of course), then my daughter directed him to go outside with her, you can see the hesitation in Moose body language but he complied and I was able to pickup all the toothpick without the stress and chaos. Thank you!!! Can express how much this channel help us a lot.

Yet another absolute gem Susan, thank you for this. You speak with such knowledge, understanding and empathy and always from the heart. I was with you 100% at the end with tears in my own eyes as I know I've been that frustrated person too many times. I love my wee man with all my heart, no hesitation, no second thoughts, and its a frustration that can come with inexperience (he's my first dog) when deep down in my heart I know that I need to do better and be better for my wee fella. In those moments (which thankfully become rarer and rarer as we improve) that I'm never really cross with him, only really at myself. I started out with a high drive dog as my first dog and to be honest I had no idea what I was getting myself into, but it's genuinely the single most rewarding thing I've ever done in my entire life. There is life before Marty (my Parson Russell side kick) and life after, and it will never be the same again! A wee ray of sunshine that constantly asks me to question why and what I'm doing, his quick witted nature and razor sharp intelligence will forever test my abiilty to read his signals and signs. In doing so he has shown me an alternative path to openness, patience, understanding and sensitivity that I don't think anyone else really ever could. Here's to all the high drive dogs and the wonderful lessons they teach us when we learn to listen and open our hearts! Thank you for all you do, Gavin & Marty :)

Thank you for this, it made me cry. My Aussie I lost recently was exactly how you described a high drive dog to be but didn't realize that is what he was until now. He was an amazing teacher as I had to drastically up my skills to become more precise and seriously quick, to keep his frustration level down. I had to pick my trainers carefully to work with us or he couldn't cope. He was such a joy to work with when I finally "got it" and wonderful agility partner. Love all your videos and such, always SO much to learn!

I can relate to all your solutions for these wonderful High drive dogs :) I do have a sheltie puppy who's extremely driven and also could be labelled a sleepy puppy. He needed lots of love and patience the first 11 months of his life. And we kept low expectations on his (agility) training. Lots of basics and foundations with kilo's of treats involved :) BUT the curve suddenly started climbing and now we are progressing in a rather fast rate. We do have our moments but I can get him to focus again rather quickly. only gamechanger would be, getting rid of the clicker and turning down the sound of the T&T. Thanks again!! lots of love!

I also knew it was me and understood that his behavior was a result of my inability to be precise and clear with my expectations but I never understood that his response to charge forward, take another jump, do what's next, offer multiple behaviors was due to frustration due to my inability to be precise. This session really hits home for me. Thank you so much for your insight. You describe exactly how I was feeling with my current sheltie. I was frustrated beyond words, until I opened my mind to thinking through her mind. I’ve shed a few tears lately for causing her so much frustration, and in turn having her shut down on a couple agility training sessions. You have just cemented in my mind I need to make some personal changes in my training methods for her. I can answer your one question honestly, do I love her…absolutely.
@Patsagilitybits Жыл бұрын
I can't understand anyone having to think about whether they love their dog. Mine has been puppy brained and bonkers since day one. She's had to be split up from her best friend at training class because she's a bad influence on him. She steals things to get my attention, and if that doesn't work she barks. Agility classes usually take longer with Rosie disrupting everything, but we're working through it all patiently. Everyone is asking when I'm going to compete with her and I say, 'When she's ready.' Dogs mature at different rates and just because the Kennel Club say she can compete at agility at eighteen months it doesn't mean she's ready. People tend to forget this with young dogs. There's never a moment when I don't love my dog. I fell for her as a little puppy. I was supposed to have the boy puppy but Rosie stole my heart. She's only seventeen months and she hasn't reached maturity by any manner of means, but she'll get there. She loves everyone and is excellent with other dogs. I wouldn't be without her for the world.

I wished that my condo board watched this video. I rescued a high drive Lab/Staffy in July 2021. Her issues were due to being stuck in a crate in a kennel in a rescue center warehouse with 200+ other dogs. (i light cook Dr. Judy Morgan recipe of meat, vitamins, high quality oils and vegetables) Rather than 'control" the weight or size of the dog allowed in this community, they just "banned" ALL dogs with Staffordshire Terriers, Bull Terriers, Pit bulls, wolves from this condo. I can understand controlling the size and weight in order to monitor what kinds of dogs are allowed here, but to single out a breed is just wrong. I love this topic and are watching every video on this topic.

In training she does very well, but in competition (change of environment) she gets crazy and if she has a tunnel prank she goes in and eliminates it. I don't know how to control her in competition. Do you love your dog? Susan asked me this question many years ago before h 360 I owned a three year old border collie, well trained loved me to death, but was crazy in Agility and my instructors blamed me for his behavior I just wasn’t quick enough didn’t get the commands out soon enough so I learn to hate this dog who loved me so much Susan gave me permission to send him back to the breeder and he replaced his father as a herding dog on the farm and lived out the rest of his life loved and working the farm thank you Susan for giving me permission to rehome a dog that I could not give my love to. I do wonder how life would’ve been different with him if we would’ve had H360 I believe he would’ve been a different dog that’s why H360 has changed my life in the agility world forever

It's beautiful,about 45 lbs now that it's 7-8 mo old. She has been popping it on the nose (I know you shouldn't do this) since it was a puppy. But recently told me "they were fighting and she punched it"... The elderly lady told me she hired a trainer recently who tried to teach her how to interact with the dog, but the stubborn old woman does it her own way anyway.

How should i react if my dog got frustrated during training? Still give the treat because he's trying so hard? Make him, instead of the thing that's too hard right now, do a very easy command that he'll succeed in for sure, then praise him & give the treat? And should the training session end once the dog seemed overwhelmed, even if he can calm down again? I don't want my pupper to feel stressed ❤

The moment I stopped getting frustrated when my dog was "stubborn" and gave her the benefit of a doubt that she did not hear me or was too overstimulated in the environment or something is bothering her physically or that it was my fault and not hers our training SKYROCKETED. Now on the rare occasion she does not do what is asked on the first try you can see her mind go "oh, right, she just asked me to do something. I'll listen and get rewarded this time". And there is no shutting down because of annoyance in my voice or posture or whatever

My dog is naturally high drive. He is a field line Australian Shepherd. He has learned some forms of calmness but in advance obedience classes and agility I have to explain to people why I am “coddling” him. He does amazing in follow cues and executing commands but gets so excited around movements and other pups and people, but I will often be petting him while he laying on his belly instead of making him hold a sit. As a way to calm him, acknowledge his feelings and give him a second to get that extra energy out.

I'm trying to train a rescue McNab puppy for success to go to a forever home. He is a high-drive pup and very biting/aggressive. I know he's super smart, and can be really sweet. But he has this devil-dog switch that will flip on if he's tired or maybe bored. I don't want to punish him, but his biting of my skin and my clothing is just unacceptable. Poor thing was crated for two months for 23 hrs/day from 7 weeks old to 14 weeks old. All of his training at home has gone well until he decides he's going to snarl, growl and bite at me like I'm cattle. The only relief I've found is to put him in that timeout you said not to do. But what to do, wasn't mentioned. I will look into signing up for your training. I just don't have a lot of money and this dog I never wanted is costing me a fortune! I was just trying to save him from my irresponsible family member.

So much great advice here which I really needed. I still don't understand the label "High Drive Dog". If I have a 5 month old puppy that goes from calm to 60 in fraction is that high drive? Or does behaviors at home but, outside my home in a new environment can't focus, over stimulated, leaping about does that make high drive? Or do I just have a puppy that needs more training not being labeled?
@RaptorsGirl3 жыл бұрын
Honestly Helen I never think of any of my dogs as “high Drive” until somebody asked me to categorize them. I just train the dog that’s in front of me. Am I seeing behaviour that I want to reinforce? Am I helping the puppy or dog grow to be confident? These are the things that I wonder about not what category my dog belongs to or doesn’t belong too.

My dog is super food motivated, so she will high pitch bark at me because I haven't delivered a reward. When she is trying to do what I ask her but isn't getting it right she will bark in a super high pitched tone at me. I won't give her a reward though because she isn't doing it right. For example I'm trying to teach her to sit in reinforcement zone on my right side. I try your method of moving the reward around so her bottom comes in close to me. This doesn't work so well because she jumps up trying to get the reward. So is she frustrated and over aroused because she knows there is a treat but she can't have it? Or maybe go back and look at my mechanics first for what I'm trying to teach.

I've got a high drive dog I think that's just who he is I'm not a hyper person I wish I could find him a home that wants him and where he would be better. He's quick at learning and always wants to be doing something. Cause it's just me he's too much I get no space or time to myself I would like him to live with a family who are out doors type of people I walk him 3 hours a day train him every day spend time with him but he just always wants to do something. Could someone please explain to me what over-faced means? Thank you.

@outbuy Being over-faced means the dog is given a challenge that's too hard for its current skill level, leading to stress or confusion. Susan suggests breaking tasks down to keep things manageable. (Julie - DogsThat Team)

My Miss Crazy Pants, Brigitta, is definitely a high drive dog, WITH some anxiety issues, for which she is on medication. She is a Boxer/Lab, with some Beagle thrown in. I'm her second adopter. So, also dealing with that baggage. She has been challenging, as I have other challenges, too. So, stepping away from the clicker -- I certainly saw how that amped up her drive. And will be re-reading "Shaping For Success." I've definitely embraced the smiling and laughing mind set.

I really think you have to define what you mean by over faced.

How do you know the difference between high drive and reactive?

So helpful, Susan; thanks! I don’t understand what you mean by “faced,” though, or “over-faced.” BTW, I’m not sure if you’re aware of this or not, but there’s a lot of repetition in this video.

Hi @wendyannh, thanks for watching! Over faced is overwhelming, a term often heard in the horse world. Putting our dogs in a situation that they are not prepared for and expecting them to handle it.

OMG, the clicker makes my medium drive dog insane! I watch his thinking turn off and he just frantically throws behavior after behavior. I thought it was just me 😌
