@Summer Sanderson (helpfully) mentioned that she thinks Frap looked a little overweight referring to his tail becoming thicker beyond the base of the tail. I initially denied noticing any increase in thickness but did investigate this and do agree with Summer that his tail does thicken somewhat beyond the tails base. The increase is subtle in my mind and I do not think at its current thickness is any indicator of him being overweight (especially combined with other key indicators like dragging his belly). I did also reweigh him to double check his weight. I did weigh him not to long ago at 10.9 pounds but did so without keeping him still. This time he weighed in at 14 pounds, which, for his length (~48"), is within a healthy range (10-15 pounds). I put him in a carrier before weighing him (and weighed the carrier separately to subtract its weight) and let him settle down before weighing him this time. Remember, this is a video on Tegu OBESITY (more extreme cases of being overweight). Obviously, any overweight Tegu should be aided in bringing down his/her weight, but this video was made because a lot of Tegu's do become obese without many owners realizing.

Awesome video! I have a female black & white tegu and this helped out a lot as a little "refresher" to remind me what to look for in regards to her weight. Happy to see see and know my "Gu" is a lean, mean, eating machine!

Best way to keep track is to weigh them monthly. I crate mine in a carrier and weigh him. Subtract the carrier weight after. Visual signs are great and work well but numbers never lie! Glad to hear your gu is healthy though!

Too many people over feed baby tegus to get quicker growth and that ends up the main reason for obesity. With that said though, a thick tail is necessary for brumation. My males will put on 5 to 7 pounds over the summer but they lose almost all of it between September and February when they wake up. As for proper diet 50/50 lean meats and veggies with fruit as treats only. And never buy pre-ground meats!!! Most is full of water and additives your tegu does not need. Invest in a meat grinder and do it yourself with the bones as well. Raw bones ground up is good for your tegu.

Our tegu is very fat we been feeding him same as you Monday Wednesday and Friday, rats 🐀 but seems to be obese lol shall we feed him only twice a week to try and get some weight of.
@ProfessorHerp4 жыл бұрын
I feed twice weekly now. Rats can be fatty. Get some greens and veggies in that diet! Reptilinks is a great product that balances out a lot of the meat/veggie/greens for you. If you get any let them know I sent ya!

When did you start feeding just a few days a week
@ProfessorHerp4 жыл бұрын
Went from everyday, to every other day, to 2x a week. I think I fed everyday until around 10-12 months. Every other day until maybe a year and a half. Not 100% but around that.

Is there sign of beardie obesity?
@ProfessorHerp5 жыл бұрын
There are but that would a separate video! Best way to tell is to weigh monthly though! I would say main indicators would be dragging of the stomach when moving, extreme laziness, and "bloatedness".
