That’s an interresting point, the loudness war has always bothered me and in the 90’s when I was a teenager buying cd’s I defenitly noticed a trend that albums became louder around 1996 or so when I was buying my first cd’s from my pocket money. I listen to a lot of different genres of music ranging from rock, pop, acid jazz, funk, techno to gothic darkwave and postpunk to chiptunes from old games. I like the music to be dynamic so I prefered the dynamic version of the test track. My reference is early 90’s loudness levels, the ones from the 2000’s are too much for me to a point where it starts to degrade the music and listening experience. This a problem with remastered albums, take Nirvana’s nevermind album for instance. I have the 2011 cd version and a more recent vinyl copy of it. The 2011 cd version has very muddy sounding drums whereas the version from the early 90’s sound much nicer to me. But when I doodle a bit with korg gadget I tend to make it to too loud for my dad’s ears. I guess younger people have less problems with “loud” but older people might find something too loud even when I consider it comfortable. My dad always complains about too much bass and he associates that with loudness (his frame of reference is the early 70’s).

You scan all your tracks of your library and corrective gain is applied based on loudness. the base line is -6db, but really old records are corrects -1db or -2db. Pretty much anything from the the last decade starts at -7db up to -12db. No more reaching for the volume knob.

Hey! This was super helpful. I've been kind of... doing my own thing for... ever (oops). But I just ran my mix/master through this tool, and hey! I was pretty spot on. My technique has been to use fairly heavy saturation on just about everything with serious transients (drums, etc), typical compression on everything, and then a little compression and saturation on the master, with a limiter to bring everything up to zero. I actually set it to -0.5 to ensure no clips. Apparently it works great! Spotify and some pull it down -2db.

Excellent video and an important topic. I agree with what you said here. I find when you can find the sweetspot generally the sound quality on whichever the service used is much better also when listening through that service. I also noticed that on some of the best sounding (in my opinion) reference tracks often when looked at are not peak saturated and limited to the flatline, and in fact usually have a db or so of headroom even mastered... which for a long time threw me off, but over time I have leaned that the ears tell the best story in the end, even though the science and numbers are also totally of use. It just goes to show the multitudes of range there can be between what hits the ear and everything in between is very subjective.
@heidewatzka5 жыл бұрын
Curios, I never had such a problem. I produce my tracks arround -4 to -5 I-LUFS and when I bring that track up to the same LVL lie my -14 LUFS produced track, then it sounds a little bit difference, but it has the same perceived loudness. Maybe it depends of the genre. Like I said, the sound, because of the compression, is soundwise a little bit difference, but even that is most of the time not a disatvantage. Cause it sounds fuller and as a listener i have the feeling it has still enough dynamic range. So i never was intersting in that how Loud is loud enough. Gladly :D. But one thing I noticed is the fact, that some Songs with equal loudness get different penalties. Sometimes there is a difference up to 1,5 dB. And then yo ustill have to adjust your volume. Also that they differ not between the content is curios. A Song that is from Start to finsh just an equal volume, because of its style will get a much higher "punishment" then a track with build in quiter parts. And then the loud parts are stick out dramaticly. Some make this as an sport today and it sounds horrible. So in my opiion the integrated LUFS is absolute not a good choise to limit songs. Good video.
@ProductionAdvice5 жыл бұрын
The difference you're noticing is because the streaming services don't use LUFS (only TIDAL). Which is the main reason we made the website and plugin :-)
@heidewatzka5 жыл бұрын
@@ProductionAdvice Ah, thats very interesting (I just read LUFS and True peak most of the time on that web pages). What are they using? The difference i notices happens in every value I check my mixes and masterings so far. RMS, DR, LUFS (all kind of, Momentary, Integrated and so on), Peak, True Peak and so on. It is even worser...often Songs with a true peak of +3 up to +5 dB (like in EDM) and an LUFS from arround -3 LUFS Integrated in there loudest parts and an overal LUFS arround -5,5 are do not get as much punishment as some Songs with no true peaks above zero and an "normal" LUFS from about -8 to -7. So for me that seems, that there is a hunge "thinking" mistake on those streaming services. Hope you can help me out on it..would be great. BTW...very usefull plugin. Follow your site since a few years.

Recently found out that Spotify not only normalizes tracks when they are too loud but also applies some sort of distortion to it (though compression/saturation/limiting? idk) that makes it sound even more flat. In the app settings you can turn this off and kaboom, all of a sudden the songs sound way better (not only louder). Im confused why they would do this instead of just turning the general volume down/up, user experience is also delivering the best, unaltered audio quality right?
@ProductionAdvice5 жыл бұрын
This isn't true, in our testing. Spotify *does* use a limiter if it needs to turn quiet songs up, but not when it turns loud songs down.
@nietsmusic5 жыл бұрын
@@ProductionAdviceThanks for the reply! Maybe I should elaborate, in the Android app, apart from the normalize function you have a "volume level" adjuster which reads: "Adjust your volume for your enviroment". By default this is turned on on a "normal" setting, I haven't run the audio into my PC but listening to it the transients sound completely brick walled, especially on tracks that don't have that much dynamic range in the first place. Edit: I just recorded both settings into my daw, balanced the levels and flipped the phase, the normalisation (normal) setting doesn't seem to turn it down at all, it actually pushes the track a bit higher and compresses it :/. I am at a total loss here, I have no Idea what is going on, the "soft" setting does turn it down and the "loud" setting completely destroys the track. I don't think this option is availlable in the desktop app. I know that in the past Spotify only adjusted levels but this is a completely different system, there is also no way to just turn off the "enviroment" setting.
@ProductionAdvice5 жыл бұрын
@@nietsmusic OK gotcha. This means your track is slightly *below* the reference level for Spotify. If you test it using the plugin in this video, or on the website for free (www.loudnesspenalty.com) you'll see it has a positive value for Spotify, meaning they will turn it *up* - and in that case they will use a limiter to prevent clipping, as you noticed. In other words your original statement was correct except that your song was too quiet for their reference level, not too loud ! And the problem gets worse if you choose the "loud" setting because they boost it even more. You either have to put up with this, or possibly lift the level yourself a little before upload so it has a small negative LP score. In this case Spotify won't add limiting - at least not on the "normal" setting. (Most users don't even know these settings are there, and leave them on the "normal" default all the time) Hope that helps ?!

I've been mixing for -14 LUFS and 00 on the meterplugs plugin and it's never as loud as online reference tracks. I put those reference tracks in my daw to see how "loud" they are and it was -11.5 to -10 LUFS and -4.5-5.0 on Meterplugs. I uploaded the track to Google Play just to test it and it's nice and "loud"... didn't seem like there was a penalty or it was just ignored. Is there actually a standard or is LUFS just a way to measure? I keep reading everywhere on the web that -14 is the way to go... I'm mixing R&B and Hiphop. Also looking at the wav the reference, "professional" tracks are compressed like hell and barely any dynamics. Is this actually what people expect?
@matterofzoets5 жыл бұрын
Hey man one thing to remember is that the frequency balance affects how hard the song will hit the limiter if the track is bass heavily then if its master at -10 reduced to -14 for streaming it will not sound fairly transparent because of how uneven the mix is in comparison to other commercial tracks. I would recommend trying to balance your mix as best as possible before applying limiting in master or back in mixing and see if that adds to your overall volume. And lastly remember compressed mixes fatigue the ears!

They sounded a bit punchier than the originals and were being accepted by all the streaming services. But I was surprised to see the results now that I learned about this "loudness penalty analyzer"!?! So far, my songs are being dinged between 4-6 db.. Perhaps I should be releasing the original versions without mastering?? I'm still not quite clear on the purpose of mastering.. you lower the volume just so it can be boosted again..and then you get penalized for boosting it?? What's an acceptable penalty level/range, in your opinion? Thank you. Edit: To my naked/uncultured ears both the original and the mastered versions of my songs sound clean. I am mastering my album to have about 11-12 dB of dynamic range. RMS level of around -12dB, with 3 to 5 dB of gain reduction on the output track. I can't get it any louder without it sounding saturated and compromised, so this seems to be sensible for my own limitations and for the material... jazz inflected funk, I suppose you would call it. It's certainly quieter than current produced music, but people can just turn the stereo up when they listen. I'm not sure if this sounds crazy or sensible.

Here's my question: Does this even matter? I mean, if the streaming services will turn down some tracks (and push up others depending on their loudness) so that all music sounds relatively at the same volume, why bother checking the penalties and so on? Why not just master the music to a loudness, that serves the track itself (If it's a Hardstyle track, it will obviously have be louder than a Folk track etc.) and then just leave the streaming services to adjust the loudness as they need?
@slapshot14imo5 жыл бұрын
that is the point he was making about streaming sites putting an end to the loudness war. BUT, as he mentioned, if you get your mastered track pushed up cuz it's too quiet, it may fudge your sound. It's probably better to be a little too loud and have it pulled down versus pushed up.
@Madrrrrrrrrrrr5 жыл бұрын
Yes because most loudness normalisation system overcorrects loudness on both sides of the spectrum wrong when it needs to do it too much. And to make matters worse only Tidal uses a true LKFS measurement system as far as we know. The rest is not a standard or mixes of. To keep it simple: you want to keep the best quality and keep the most dynamics you use this plug always at 0 LU for every platform. Now if you need to master a hardstyle track this becomes difficult because that genre doesn't really know dynamics or definition at all :P But seriously. 99,99% of the people here posting will never run at 0 LU. They say they care about true dynamics but most of them don't because of their peers/fashion and ignorance. Only real audiophile's know. Back to the real world: that's why they invented LUFS. It's anti loudness war. LUFS and True peaks? If you know how to gainstage and master a track you don't need this plugin. So yes mix accordingly but if you squash a track like this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/d3vXdYt_lt-lg9E a LKFS system make your mix engineer and mastering guy look like fools.

There's another hassle: trying to convince your client that the master you're giving is loud enough. He goes home, shows the song to friends, and they compared with some lousy hit-for-the-week song, and just say: 'this is selling a million, can't you put your louder?"

Send them to the website (www.loudnesspenalty.com) so they can preview it for themselves and hear how it will sound :-)

@@ProductionAdvice thanks, I didn't know about this website! Great! I'm already buying the software to facilitate hearing on the fly, but having that on the web is precious. Thank you again.
