In today's video I will show how to determine if your water pump is bad, in a Ford Explorer, years 2012-2019 with the 3.5 liter engines. And this same type of water pump can also be found in numerous other vehicles with the 3.5 and 3.7 liter engines, such as the Ford Edge, Flex, Taurus, police interceptors and a couple Lincoln models as well.
So, if you happen to have vehicle such as I just mentioned, with a leak in the right front, under the vehicle just below the AC compressor that is orange or possibly yellow in color.
This will more than likely be an antifreeze coolant leak, which could be leaking from a bad water pump

Put 129,000 miles on a 2014 Explorer and was worried about this. Then the transaxle started making noise. Fixed both by getting rid of it. It never leaked but was on borrowed time - not that bad to replace if the engine was out of the car on an engine stand. More trouble than its worth to replace it while its in the car!

Finally someone who explained this in proper detail with examples. Basically you have to hope that the cause of your coolant leak isn't due to the water pump because it will cost a lot of money and it's something that you can't do on your own unless you have the mechanical knowledge to fix it.
@zzoinks
@zzoinks 7 ай бұрын
Could try learning to fix it, but I'm sure that's challenging and learners will encounter some issues and mistakes to work through. But I think sell a high quality timing chain and water pump kits for this car for only $300 or $400 online, so if somebody wanted to try learning and had time, they could try fixing it!

I've heard some horror stories where somebody's water pump went bad so quickly while they were driving, the engine was destroyed by the coolant and oil mixing. Not sure how fast that can happen, but it also happens on Mazdas with this engine. In the previous design of the duratec engine, the water pump was on the outside, and apparently those are very reliable. And I've heard good things about this newer Duratec engine except you need to replace the water pump preventatively and it's super expensive like this.

I have a 2013 Ford Edge with the 3.5 non-turbo v6. 140,000 miles and no problems yet. I change the oil every 5,000 miles with full synthetic and change and flush the radiator every three years. The new motors won’t take any neglect like the old iron blocks. Keep up with your maintenance and the water pump should last 200,000 miles.

Crazy, my 2015 Ford Explorer XLT 2x4 has been driven now for about 184,000 miles without having to replace the water pump yet. Main issue that I have had were the front CV Axels having to be replaced twice. It’s my daily driver where I travel roughly 70 miles between home and work five days a week. Did have the coolant system flushed and replaced the coolant once about the 120,000 mile mark or so. Surprised it has survived this long but still worried a bit when this issues arises. Loved my Explorer this far and fear it would be too costly to repair. It’s only a matter of time.

It's best to get a used engine for $500 to $600 if not turbo from a crashed junked police car from LQK and pick it up yourself because you'll get charged $200 for shipping then a mechanic to put on for $600 to $800. Happened to me with my 2014 Taurus Police Interceptor sedan. Got a 42k 3.7 V6 engine from a 2015 crashed police car with a water pump in good condition. $1600 .

Ford should have a recall on the water pump……Last week I was in the car with my little baby and the car overheated and stopped in the middle of the streets and again on the highway, I did not even drive too long…. Today the dealer told me that the water pump is the cause and the cost to fix it is $4000 and that is without tax….. my husband and I are looking elsewhere to fix it…. This is dangerous especially when you have a baby, children, elderly in the car.

I will defend Ford just a little bit. Literally millions of these vehicles were produced with these engines and the percentage of ones with early water pump failure is pretty low. Many of the ones that did fail early were because of poor maintenance. If you own a car with one of these engines make sure oil changes are done on time (or earlier) and have the cooling systems serviced with fresh Ford approved coolant every 30k miles. This will greatly put the odds on your side that your water pump will last 150k miles or more. There are thousands of these engines that have got to 200k on the original pump...my bet would be that those ones were meticulously maintained. An ounce of prevention is always worth a pound of cure. All cars have inherent problems. I would take the Ford 3.5 ltr engines any day over the GM 3.6 ltr ones that are notorious for early timing chain failures. Honda, Subaru and Nissan have all had expensive transmission issues in some of their cars. And don't even get me started on Chrysler or any European brands.

There is no excuse for this. FORD should be ashamed for even designing an internal water pump. Yes maintenance is a great deterrent for early mechanical failures but there are so many of these annoying and very expensive issues with this explorer, and many more models. That godforsaken sync 2/3 radio alone made me swear a blood oath the old gods and the new that I’ll never buy another ford. Before the bullshit started I genuinely enjoyed my explorer sport. I’ve had to replace both turbos, two radios and now the water pump, I was about to replace the world’s worst factory struts. This is like an abusive relationship, you have to cut your losses and walk away.

A huge jackass design this engine. It would have been pretty easy to have the cooling water boss outside of the timing chain cover on, instead of in, the engine. I think these POS engineers design some of this in order to make dealerships money. A lot of people fall for the dealership BS and think that only the dealer can do this job when any good mechanic, pro or not, can do it. I remember decades ago when I went to an auto show and Cadillac had just come out with the NorthStar V8. They had a cutaway engine display and the starter was UNDER the intake manifold. When I asked about it, the sales guy indicated that it was rated for 100000 miles too. So, again, it required tearing down the top end just to replace a $100 starter. The mechanical engineers doing this, and their bosses, need to be drop-kicked off the planet!!
