Thank you so much! What are official estimates about the number of active Yiddish speakers or those whose first or mother tongue is Yiddish are there left in the world? The problem with Yiddish is that it is a playful, rich variant of German developed by Ashkenazim Jews and with loan words from Polish, Russian or Hebrew. When the ground was pulled from beneath the feet of the east European Jews and they were dispersed to other countries, mostly US or Israel, Yiddish as their vernacular also lost its foundation.

Probably all of them. It wassn't his official acceptance speech, but an appearance before a special Yiddish-speakers banquet that was organized in his honor by the NY Yiddish newspaper "Forward" where he worked for many decades.
