This is a really cool project and a really beautiful execution! However, if one would wants a quick and easy result, I think there's a much simpler solution - there are ready made boards with Arduino and stepper drivers such as MKS Gen and you could use closed loop steppers which have built in PID control loop and can recover from a skipped step or a stall and the gearing wouldn't be necessary (Makerbase has them in their offer for quite cheap). Alternatively, there are also planetary gear adapters for steppers which are in the range of $10 and are much stronger. I'm building something similar, but for an AK-47 with Nema 23 motors and the above mentioned solution.

Nice work. I wonder if it could be easy for a novice to change some elements in the mount such as the length of the U shape part. From stp file and a softwar such as freecad it does not seem too simple. Which software did you use to create this parts and do you provide sources if we want to simply change blueprints ? Or maybe there is a muche mor suitable software than freecad to deal with step files . Thanks.

Looks like a great design Isaac. I will surely print and try. Can you give an indication of how much backlash you have in each axis? My main goal is to use the mount to pinpoint the DSLR to exact coordinates (astrophotography). In that sense, backlash will be important. Also, it is a good choice to use Hall effect sensors instead of tactile switches commonly used in similar applications. Thank you for sharing it all.
@isaac8793 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Honestly if you main use is going to be astrophotography you should check out openastrotech.com/ instead. Their mount is much better suited to it. I printed the gears to a very high tolerance so there is almost no backlash at all but this will depend the calibration of your printer. Limit switches would have probably been slight more accurate but I didn't want them clicking every time the axis moved past them (when not homing). The hall effects still seem very accurate though.

@rendtech4 жыл бұрын
This looks amazing and well done on getting it all built. The only thing that I am a bit worried about is that my lens is a bit bigger and will hit the stepper motor if not careful. What ways are there to make sure that you can put a stop to the tilt function to protect for this. Also am I able to use the Arduino uno with the cnc shield avoiding having to build the board myself?
@isaac8794 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Unfortunately there isn't really a way to stop it from hitting the lens/camera. I have used a variety of much larger lenses and haven't had any issue as long as I have been careful not set the tilt axis to far. Even if you do manage to hit the lens against the mount the stepper motors should just skip steps and not actually damage it anyway. Using an Uno and CNC shield would require you to change some pin assignments in the code and might not have the circuitry for the hall sensors and shutter trigger for the camera. Apart from that it should work (I initially did some testing with a CNC shield before making my own board).
