I think being buried in her wedding dress holding the heart was a statement to the fact that she may never have really had his heart while married. She was a survivor.

I think that her being buried that way meant that all she want was her husband's heart when she was a bride. Maybe it was PR, maybe she was talking to her descendants, maybe her son did it and she never requested or knew that was how she would be buried.

I have heard in several histories about her that it wasn't that Edward had male "favorites" it was that these favorites usurped her position and that of other high ranking cortiers. Additionally, he supposedly wasn't doing his husbandly duties which meant she couldn't fulfill her duties to have children. I think being buried with his heart and in her mantel was to reassert her rank as queen and wife. Which would be important for the legitimacy of her heirs by him. I think it is hard to think of it as a purely romantic gesture.
@scarletohhaha6938
@scarletohhaha6938 Жыл бұрын
I agree it's unlikely a romantic gesture, particularly given it was a union purely for political reasons. She was also clearly an intelligent woman who understood well the obligations, power, etc. of her royal position. Her own heart belonged to Mortimer, so this was definitely her making a final statement of some sort.

At that time, there were so many factions who were a danger to her and eventually her son, that she had to decide which path to take and stick with it. To be treated so badly as a young bride and then later stripped of friends and cash, who can blame her for being a strong woman. 🇫🇷👑

If I remember correctly, the story also came about a few decades after his death too, so... *Correcting myself: I misremembered, it only took a few years after his death, though from what I read, it was likely put about as some type of propaganda after Mortimer's execution and Edward 3's rise to full power.

Isabella is such an interesting, strong person! She had to deal with an awful lot, and I think she's fab. Perhaps she didn't want to bring any disrepute on her son - he didn't exactly share that his mother had been shacked up with Mortimer, even if it might have been commonly known. I liked the idea that she asked to be buried with his heart and the mantle as a way of showing she'd come to England as Queen of England and Edward the 2nd's consort, and she'd leave England as such - but that's based on nothing but the romantic in me. As for if she was a she-wolf - in a positive way, yes. She stood up for herself and her children.🐺👑

I've read Alison Weir's biography on Isabella, attracted to having the same name and French roots, and further picked up what I could on her history. What struck me - as in your summary - was how women were thought of as mere pawns or bargaining chips in the royal courts and aristocratic games, and how they could either resign themselves to it, or choose to forge a destiny of their own. Neither would be easy, but choosing the latter truly put them in the crossfires of history. Thrown into it at such a very young age and confronted with a humiliating marriage, Isabella showed herself to be intelligent, resourceful and a strategist of note. Almost a thousand years later, there's much we don't know for sure that could add to the complicated tapestry. It looked like many of the citizenry adored her, but the upper classes and courtiers called her 'Jezebel'. She could not be directly implicated in her husband's death, but she was stuck with the association. The episode with Mortimer might have been the most painful of her life. For once she had a real man that she could be wholeheartedly in love with, a man who was a proper companion and supported her. There were indications that she might have been pregnant when her son grabbed him, miscarried, had a breakdown and spent a long time in seclusion...and came out of it rather pious. Probably a penitent, she dedicated her latter life to building churches and supporting the work of the church. And maybe, in this frame of mind, she tried to reconcile with her husband in death. She must have looked back on her time on earth with a mixture of triumph and regret. But she was not going to be a footnote of history, like so many queens were relegated to.

I know she-wolf is meant as a slur, but I kind of love it as a badge of honor. She was mistreated in her marriage from the start but managed to do her job and provide heirs while maintaining some sort of throuple with Edward and Piers. I think the Despensers were a different level of cruel which pushed her over the edge and she felt she had to set things back to rights. She definitely wasn’t perfect-Mortimer was a ba choice and she nearly got herself in trouble along with him-but I respect her.

@lizamartin4705I'm pretty sure she and Mortimer were never married. Marrying him could have made her beside the point as Edward's queen and her son's mother, inviting other nobles to try to control her son.
@stephaniechristensen6018
@stephaniechristensen6018 8 ай бұрын
@lizamartin4705 She had him killed? Her son, Edward III, pulled off the whole thing. He got a band of his buddies together, got access to their chambers through a hidden tunnel, surprised them either late at night or early in the morning, and took both of them into custody. It was he who ordered Mortimer killed. I don't think she had much of a choice in the matter, as she'd gone too far and done too much to be keen on giving up power voluntarily. She may have acknowledged reality and accepted that her fate was in her son's hands, but I'm guessing she'd had no intention of giving up Mortimer.
@stephaniechristensen6018
@stephaniechristensen6018 8 ай бұрын
@lizamartin4705Your initial comment was about Mortimer getting too powerful and having him "taken care of," not Edward II. As I said, it makes absolutely no sense. The only reason Mortimer accumulated any power at all was as an adjunct to Isabella and her son. Nothing I've heard of ever suggested that Mortimer was ever at cross-purposes with or threatened her or Edward III after they joined forces. That would have been killing the golden geese.

I had a freaking nervous breakdown when I saw her in Braveheart!! Luckily I was with a bunch of history nerds, so I wasn't the only one angrily hissing "she was NINE & still in France, FFS!!" I've had multiple people online tell me Braveheart is accurate, lol- apparently completely impossible events, like Isabella having an affair with Wallace, him fathering Edward III, & Edward I throwing Gaveston out a window, are "just minor details", & "it follows all the _important_ events correctly"... What, like the Battle of Stirling Bridge with _no effing bridge?!?!_ Only the most famous battle he won, but apparently that's a "minor detail" too. I can't even. To be clear & fair, I also think it's a super-fun & entertaining film, but it could've been just as fun & entertaining without adding such wildly inaccurate rubbish. You'd have to invent some stuff to fill in gaps, like in his early life, but you could at least TRY to vaguely follow the facts that we do know... Sadly, most people dgaf, so people who make films & tv have no incentive to be historically accurate.

She had the most incredible life and is one of my absolute favorites in history. Thinking about the magnitude of her coup d'etat always amazes me. A foreign born woman overthrowing an anointed king even if it was in the name of her son is incredible. I often hear that John I or Mary I were the most hated monarchs in English history but it seems Edward II must have been pretty bad for nearly all his nobility and common people to just let her basically swoop in and take him down. Also I know wolves had a bad rep in the old world but I would def take She-Wolf as a compliment. So 🐺 👸🏼 🇫🇷

I got a very different perspective on Isabella when I found out about the Tour de Nesle affair. The wives of her 3 brothers were apparently having affairs, & Isabella told her father the king, & her sisters-in-law were imprisoned & their lovers executed, & that's only the start of an epic drama that contributed significantly to the end of the Capet dynasty. ⚜ Isabella fascinates me, and I'm so glad to hear your detailed assessment of her life. I think she was a strong survivor in a terrible situation. I always marvel at how these women, taken from their countries as young girls (albeit, as you say, trained for the life ahead), and thrown into the politics, power plays and scandals of another country, so often manage to carve out a life and an agenda of their own. Was she flawed? Perhaps ultimately power hungry herself? Sure, I suppose. But I don't know how one navigates such a life without a certain grit and steel. I can't fault her for trying to take power when the alternative was to have power used against her. As for the mantle and heart... so many possible interpretations... The thought came to me that maybe it was a way to remind the world that she came to England to be a queen consort to a man who never gave her his heart while he lived. That this was her intended purpose, and that she did her best to fulfill it. I might call her a she-wolf, sure... But I think very highly of wolves. ⚜🐺⚜

In case anyone didn't get the classical allusions in the Marlowe quote: Circe was a witch who lived on an island and turned sailors into pigs; Juno (Hera) was the Queen of the Gods and always being cheated on by Jove (Zeus), for which she often sought revenge; Ganymede was a beautiful boy whom Jove had brought up to Olympus to be his... uhh... cupbearer.

It startled me to hear how Isabella was buried. How did I get this old and read so much and not know that? If she was a cold-hearted She-Wolf, then I'd have to say she did it to show she possessed him utterly. Perhaps she wanted to demonstrate this to the world because she had been so hurt by his preference towards others. I think she gets a bad rap because she had taken Mortimer as a lover and angered the Barons. There is nothing wrong with being a wolf or a lion defending yourself and your cub. And she succeeded. Something Eleanor of Aquitaine kept trying and failing to do thus its interesting the different ways they are remembered.❤

I think it is a little of both. I think in the beginning she was just trying to survive as queen (getting back what was her due), But as her power grew, she became a bit like a she wolf. 🐺🍟🐺

Thank you, I liked your video. Being a student of history I have found it to be factual which a lot of these videos channels are not, and I like that when you give an opinion you state that it is an opinion. I have subscribed and liked.

Great video. Interesting as always. Has Dr Kat already done a video on Margaret of Anjou? I wouldn’t mind all the so-called ‘she-wolves’ getting a video.

Good video. I expect the wedding mantle and heart was her way of a last dig at Edward II’s ‘favorites’. I.e., she won! 👑👸 Well done.
