Isabelle Huppert stands among the greatest actors working today. As the Festival presents her three latest films - Paul Verhoeven’s Elle, Mia Hansen-Løve's Things to Come, and Bavo Defurne’s Souvenir - we are honoured to welcome her for an in-depth conversation about her staggering four-decade filmography that includes work both with established masters (Jean-Luc Godard, Claude Chabrol, Claire Denis, Michael Haneke) and emerging auteurs (Hansen-Løve, Joachim Trier).
Isabelle Huppert dominates the screen like no one else. Her staggering oeuvre - which spans over four decades and features more than 100 roles - situates the French actor as one of the most prolific and fiercely committed artists in cinematic history.

I find it hard to think of any performance more impressive than hers in “The Piano Teacher”. It’s just unreal.

It's more than impressive, it's so moving that it brings forward your own demons from within yourself and you not only believe in the reality of the character but by the time the film ends, you feel more like her.

She is my favorite human being on planet earth. I have seen 58 films of hers. She has a depth of insight not only into the art of cinema but of the inner life of the human mind. I find no end to her fascinating thoughts and personality. What a gift she has been to world culture. Merci beaucoup Isabelle!!

@@giovanna722 I've seen them over a 20 year period and many I saw on the French tv channel TV 5 Monde. Many are difficult or impossible to find but also many are well known. My favorites are Violette Noziere, The Ceremony, Story of Women, Coup de Torchon, The Piano Teacher, The Lacemaker, Loulou, The Trout, I Heart Huckabees. But there are so many more. I don't know if you've seen any of her films or are a fan and have seen any of these but for me she's almost flawless as an actor. I wish I could magically make available to you all her treasures of film acting that I've experienced but sadly I can't. Hope you get to see some more of her films!

@@littleghostfilms3012 Thanks for the list! I saw Violette Noziere decades ago, La Ceremonie in the last 10 years, The Piano Teacher, Coup de Torchon, but strangely don't remember her( ?).

@@giovanna722 In Coup de Torchon she was Rose the young woman who was Lucien the policeman's mistress. That film is a diabolical satire on another level!

I am French, I know her since she started in cinema. Never saw her saw so talkative. In french interviews she is so self controlled.

What a fantastic mind! I was completely engrossed, she quite skillfully is able to express her thoughts verbatim and in a foreign language. Though I do understand French, I'm glad she translated her thought process to English. Ahh! I'm fulfilled

One of my longest relationship was with a French woman and I have always been amazed how, no matter what the age, they look and dress so effortlessly chic. Combine that with Ms Huppert's brilliant mind and you have a knockout situation

I was never too fond of watching talks, I mean, I've seen a few but they are not something I actively sought out. But I just came from rewatching Elle and then her acceptance speech for Gotham and I was directed to this video. I only planned on checking out a few minutes of this but found myself heavily engrossed with everything she was saying. She was very passionately articulate for someone who was not English speaking at the first. And she was so funny, too! I've seen a handful of films of hers and always thought her to be amazing but now, I've found a stronger renewed admiration towards Isabelle Huppert.

She is somewhat an enigma, very reflected and introspective about becoming people, playing roles that exceed expectations of who she might be. Robust and fragile, headstrong and unorthodox, unwilling to give up.

The Chabrol film she does not remember is The Swindle. She is magnificent in it as usual. A must see

In den letzten Jahren habe ich jedoch ihr Genie erkannt. Sie braucht kein Drehbuch, sie könnte ohne Dialoge auftreten, nur durch Mimik, einen Blick und vor allem das kaum skizzierte Lächeln. Sie ist ein Phänomen. Seit fast einem Monat sendet der TV Arte-Kanal zwei Filme pro Woche mit ihren älteren Filmen, aber auch aus den letzten zwei oder drei Jahren. Ich habe Dramen, Komödien, atmosphärische Filme gesehen, viele in berühmten Regisseuren ... Claude Chabrol oder jüngere Regisseure. Elle ist ein Film aus dem Jahr 2016, Eva aus dem Jahr 2018, er ist absolut unwiderstehlich, ebenso wie in der Komödie Mon pire cauchemar (ich weiß nicht, wie die Rumänen ihn übersetzt haben). Ich habe einige von ihnen aufgenommen und lösche sie nicht, um dort zu sein, wenn ich sie vermisse. Nach einem der Filme gaben sie einen Dokumentarfilm aus dem Jahr 2020 mit dem Titel Isabelle Huppert, "Ein Leben dem Film gewidmet", in dem sie über ihre Filme sprach, über die Regisseure, mit denen sie zusammenarbeitete, die sie trainierten und beeinflussten, über ihre beruflichen Überzeugungen. Unübertroffen!
