And these instances where we see her in interviews that dont take her from her own element are precious, look at her, sis came back to do what she wanted lol which is take movies and talk a little bit what's on her mind. Isabelle was made for visiting the Criterion Closet. Her picks are perfect. I Knew Her Well is one of the most heartbreaking portraits of a young woman lost in the sauce of her society. And Wanda, and Nothing But a Man are beyond measure as must see films.

I really like that little anecdote Isabelle shared about Rossellini. Such a valuable lesson which doesn't only work in filmmaking but in other forms of art and literature as well.
@polytechnicaАй бұрын
WANDA broke significant ground as one of the first American feature films directed by a woman to receive international acclaim, with Loden also starring as the passive drifter in Pennsylvania coal country. The film's vérité style and unflinching depiction of a woman voluntarily abandoning her children and drifting into crime was radical for its time, influencing later independent filmmakers and feminist cinema despite being largely forgotten until its rediscovery and restoration in the 2000s. Thanks Criterion for preserving this important work! 🎬

Although she didn't explain her reasons for picking any of these, it's still one of the more refreshing closet picks because she's picked 2 movies there that I've never heard of in I Knew Her Well and Nothing But a Man (and I've seen a few thousand movies). A lot of the choices in these closet picks are a case of rinse and repeat with the same movies coming up time and again, so thank you Isabelle Huppert for highlighting something different.
