A glimpse into the very diverse thoughts and impressions about Islam that exist in China.

A few remarks: 1. I did not interrupt the people no matter what they were saying even though some of the statements are clearly mistaken and even offensive, because I want them to reveal their true thoughts and feelings about Islam. The first step towards combating misconceptions is to know what they really are. 2. A few conclusions we can draw from the video: a. Some Chinese people have positive feelings about Islam b. Some Chinese people have never heard of even the word "Islam". c. Some Chinese people hold very weird and foolish legends about Islam, not out of insult, but out of genuine ignorance (when I was growing up I was asked more than once "You guys don't eat pork, is it because your ancestor is a pig?". It's absurd and laughable but such weird ideas do exist among many Chinese people). d. A lot of Chinese people do not have a clear answer to the question "what is the purpose of life" as many in fact have not thought about this question. It's sad. 3. Don't get offended. There are many external reasons why people think a certain way or hold a certain opinion. It takes time to bridge the gaps and foster mutual understanding and it takes calmness and patience for those to happen. Peace be upon you.

Is it coz your ancestor was a pig? I've actually heard this one and similar before in a documentary. A white/British documentary film maker when to "explore" the life/lifestyle of a remote tribe. Can't remember where but it could have been around Indonesian region (don't quote me on that). The tribe considered their lineage from the pig and therefore considered it blasphemous to eat the pig. During the journalist's stay the tribe cook something (pulp) of a tree. The conversation was something along the line of that the wer not going to expect him to partake in eating the tree as it was his ancestor. How they came to that conclusion was sadly not talked about. It's a pity there's not enough sharing of such views, traditions, and practices to understand where the other is coming from and how they view things and people (including Muslims) jump to conclusions leading to misunderstandings. And then go about calling the other fools, backwards etc. At the end of the day all this modern life and advance technology amounts to very little.

I've lived in China. Their culture is different. But they don't have freedom of press and religion so Islam or any other religion is very hard to spread. You can't spread Islam(dawah) without getting in to trouble. My Chinese friend once told me money is God for him. His reasoning was that we live our whole lives to earn and make money and therefore money is God and he worships money. Quite crazy If you ask me. They have a lot of monkey king belief and dragons etc. A lot of fairy tale beliefs about some weird stuff. In the end their whole motto is to make money and follow the instructions of the Chinese communist party. They are told to be nationalist and to never disobey. So Chinese grew up never to question how things are rather just survive

I am an Arab American who lived in china for 3 years and traveled all around it. I was reading the comments, and the reason why people do not know is not just because of the communist government and lack of freedom but in the History of China, most people were peasants and large segments of society were afraid of famine and dying of hunger so when it comes to even basics like critical thinking, analyzing information, and even the simple process of thinking does not exist. The last girl is confused between Indonesia and India. I mean in Chinese is 印尼 (Indonesia) and 印度 (India), Chinese always mistaken with both of those countries, but in reality those 2 countries are *so different* . Indonesia is the biggest muslim population around the world, but she mistaken to said 印度 (Yindu means India) instead of 印尼 (Yinni means Indonesia). And she remembered that India (The Hindus) worship one holy animal that they're worship as God, and they can't eat that (actually it's cow, not pig), and with lack of knowledge, she maybe remembered why Indonesian Muslim can't eat pork because she remembers about holy animal which Indonesian worship for. The conclusion is, she did explanation "accidentally" with lack of knowledge, may Allah forgive her 🙏🏼

Along side with hearing these stereotypes and misconceptions chinese are answering, it would have been great to see you clearing up such lies as Muslim. It's every Muslim's duty to spread Dawah and to talk about Islam. Maybe you clearing up the misconceptions make the person be interested in Islam and eventually revert In Sha Allah. That's your opinion, in reality Muslims in China are treated very well and have open dawah talks, it's just that most Chinese aren't religious for one thing and secondly they really like pork and alcohol, but China is still home to approximately 25 million Muslims, possibly more but the government doesn't count or categorise it's citizen

Chinese people are hardworking, intelligent people, dedicated to what they passionate about...I mean those absurd answers given by them would not happened if they are exposed to Islamic knowledge at least at basic level.. From their answer its clear to me they have very little to nothing about Islam... The key to Islam is KNOWLEDGE, its seeds of faith, once it take root the faith or convincing feel of it being the truth would grow up as well... Its a natural process or thing, knowledge would give you confidence or sense of truth or satisfaction feel and eventually would give you calmness and rest to your soul, its actually food for your soul that is so crave about its built in in very human being to know about their Creator thats how we are wired... and eventually would open up their heart and pave way to the truthfulness of Islam.. I think Chinese people are smart people if they were given the right tools or knowledge in whatever fields they would excel greatly.. However this potential would become worthless if they not being push or nudge to the right direction..The nudge or push in this case is Knowledge once they received adequate or necessary information about Islam the rest would do the job, curiosity or craving for answer would take the driver seat and steer them to seeking more knowledge about Islam and eventually embrace it... InsyaAllah...Their perception of Islam clearly are formed from that lacking of Islamic knowledge hence the incorrectness, naiveness of it...OR assumption that were built from wrong information they were feed from whatever source of information, news or experience they had been exposed to..

You might miss a major point here: modern Chinese society is under atheism education. I am sure it is hard for you to accept the concept of Non-god existing. Same applies to Chinese to accept Allah or Christ. The meaning of life to Chinese has profound meaning embedded through Taoism (more of philosophy than a religion). The people interviewed might hesitate to give an answer of meaning of life due to the question is framed, it doesn't validate that they don't care of meaning of life, but one thing for sure, not an Islamic way. But when you look into Taoism (way of living) and other religion, you might find more common ground. I do agree that a lot of people in China don't have access to Islamic or Muslim. At the other hand, I'd like to know how much you are exposed to atheism?

@@philyhai Im Malaysian Muslim, here we have a significant population of Chinese and Indian... I know in Chines philosophy are more of moral ethic on how to conduct their life but theres no Tauhid or God concept embedded in it.. Atheism in other words means materialism or having a goal of pursuing worldly pleasure wealth, happiness through sheer hardwork... Hence the importance of education being a key to it as to achieve materialism goal or worldly gain out of it as well as doing business embedded to Chinese culture to achieve the same goal... I dont comment on this atheism thing in my previous comment as it would take too long for me to type... Here i have encountered Chinese that converted to Islam and among of them are my school teachers, lecturers who are being exposed to right Islamic knowledge and surrounded by Muslim who assist them to put them in right perspective about islam.. The point of my previous comment is Islam is not well presented to Chinese people i mean given the right, adequate knowledge then there would be a chance of Chines to weigh Islam as their religion... This is my experience here with local Chinese people who converted to Islam... I mean watching the vid, theres still a long way to go for Chines people to even consider Islam as their religion.. One of my Chinese friend once asked me the existence of God as he puzzle to whom we do our prayer to as theres no object in front of us while we doing the prayer like bowing ect... Then i asked him do you see the wind?? he answered me NO, if you cant see the wind then how can you see God who created the wind... From that onwards he search God through Islam and now hes a Muslim...

@@entahlah7840 Chinese way of living is somewhat practical, not materialism, well being is the word: you live-- being harmony with the nature; being harmony with people around you, fulfilled, provided, lasting, a complete circle of life. I am sure I can only partially grasp the essence of Taoism or put it into words. Islamic has been surviving in China over a thousand years, a long history. The "Chinese rulers" tried over and over to assimilate them through intermarriage, through massacre. It was dynamic, but Islamic is not fragile at all. Still, it is a minority to influence the Chinese culture. Plus, the modern Atheism movement in the last century. Generic public do has minimal expose to Islamic, that does put some people ignorant. Chinese in Malaysia is a different story. Chinese Malaysian are alienated being a non-Muslim minority, reversed situation. Majority Chinese in Malaysia chose materialism (at least from your view) because that is the only thing they can hold on. They are second class "well put" citizen. And their situation is far "better" than Chinese Indonesian. I am sure that it is hard for you to see the world from my side. Same apply to me. The best we can do is to communicate and to learn each other. You have to make effort to learn what is non-religion to lecture people of your religion. That is a only fair way to communicate. Or what just have to find common ground to co-live the space we share.

@@philyhai Theres no such thing as second class citizen as you mentioned... Its just a social contract sign as a precondition before accepting them as citizen before independence... Its a long story if you read the Malaysia's history then you will know.. Its more about leveling the field in education, economy as well as preserving the interest of Malay with regards to Islam as the religion of majority here with others freely to practice their religion.. Theres imbalance in term of economy and education as British back then favoured the Chinese in all economy activities here in Malaysia or known as Malaya back then, with millions of hectares land being given to Chinese to opened up the land as well as business opportunities were given to Chinese people as well.. So theres must be measures being put in place to correct this imbalance.... Plus Chinese being brought here are not meant to be Malaysian citizen but just as immigrant workers and one day would go back to China, but back then China has closed its door to Chinese diaspora from going back to mainland hence them stuck here in Malaya and wanted to be malaysian citizen... Your allegation is groundless and merely wild allegation with no historical proof or evidence to back it up...

Islam is simple, rationale and logical belief... Hence millions have converted to Islam... Well theres no way this complex universe or earth accidentally came into being with no Creator behind it, its like saying a smartphone came into existence from a random process without any intelligence behind it process.. When intelligence involved in a process then it must be posses by someone who caused it to happen..
