ISHITANI - Making a Door for my mother's house

I made a new front door for my mother's house, as it was damaged and difficult to lock.
The wood used is chestnut wood.

Absolutely stunning work as usual. Mr Ishitani is lucky to have Japanese Chestnut to work with. A Chestnut blight wiped out nearly all of those trees in the US. Glad to see Shiro on the job and managing this project!

Eurasian chestnut trees generally do not grow so tall and straight as the North American variety once did. All hardwood is very expensive in Japan, and chestnut in the lengths he used for the door is doubly hard to get. Good wood for the purpose, but I shudder at thought of the cost.

10:56 Damn skwirrlz. The door is fantastic - especially that little gap to allow for the slats to expand as the temperatures changes from winter to spring. It also brightens up that whole doorway from the original one.

Additionally, one must build always aware of the extremes of wet and dry seasons in Japan. Where I live in southernmost Honshu, humidity in the winter may go as low as 25% (where it is today), whereas during the monsoon and typhoon seasons it will average in the 75-85% range. Imagine what that will do to a wooden door over the years or more generally the exterior of a house.

Too bad brass door hardware is so hard to get in Japan. I'm sure Ishitani-san feels the same way, but maybe Okaa-san preferred low-maintenance stainless steel. I hope the glued ends of the T&G slats don't cause trouble. Japan has a very rainy climate. Good thing the door is at least somewhat protected. On a different tack, I like the unfussy shop furnishings he installed and uses. Unlike the "influencers," he's concentrating his considerable skill on attractive and salable output, not on a pretentious shop space. The same goes for his labor-saving machinery. He's there to produce beautiful, desirable goods and satisfy his personal standards while doing so.

I don’t understand - with the tongue and groove panel glued to the cross members, how will this handle wood movement?

To allow the wood to move, we used a soft silicone adhesive to secure the boards to a level that would not prevent them from expanding and contracting.
