While traveling out of station in trains, many times you would have seen the option of insurance of Rs 0.35 per passenger while booking an online ticket. We usually ignore this.
I will tell you why this is beneficial and should not be ignored.
The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) provides an optional travel insurance policy for passengers buying tickets from its online portal.
For e-ticket passengers, the policy provides cover in case of injury or death during a train journey.
Following the Odisha train accident which left at least 288 dead and 1000 injured, IRCTC’s policy to provide some level of insurance protection has garnered attention.
Here are some answers to the questions related to the policy available to e-ticket holders.
Who can opt for the policy? Other Terms and Conditions
The scheme is applicable only for Indian Citizens.Foreign citizens are not eligible.
It is provided only for CNF/RAC tickets at the time of booking.
Customers will receive the policy information through SMS directly from Insurance Companies along with the link for filing nomination details. The nomination details to be filled at the respective Insurance Company site.
The travel insurance will not be provided for the children below 5 years of age who book the ticket without berth/seat.
In case of passengers opting for insurance, the claim/liability shall be between insured and the Insurance Company.
In case of Diversion, Short Termination of trains etc, the new route will also be covered.
How To Opt For The Policy?
While booking an online ticket on IRCTC website, you are given the option of selecting the insurance policy.
You will need to pay Rs 0.35 per passenger to be insured.
It is important to note that the policy is optional.
Passengers cannot opt for it after making a reservation. It must be done while booking the ticket on the official IRCTC portal.
Which categories insurance covers?
1 - Untoward incident
Terrorist attack
Violent attack, robbery or dacoity
Rioting, shootout
Accidental falling of any passenger from train
2 - Accidents
Collision of trains
Any untoward incident between origin and destination stations
What Is Covered Under The Policy?
The insurance policy provides five types of coverage which is uniform for all classes of tickets:
1) Death:
If a passenger dies immediately or suffers an accidental bodily injury during the trip which results in death within 12 months of the incident then 100 percent of insured amount will be provided to claimants.
According to the policy, a Rs 10,00,000 amount shall be provided in case of death.
2) Permanent Total Disability:
If an injury is caused while traveling results in permanent total disability within 12 months of an accident then the insured passenger is entitled to receive Rs 10,00,000 amount.
However, it is important to note that 100 percent insured amount will be provided on specified conditions listed in IRCTC’s policy.
3) Permanent Partial Disability:
If any injury sustained during the trip directly and independently results in a permanent partial disability within 12 months of the incident then the insured person would be eligible to receive Rs 7,50,000.
However, the percentage of the amount available will be dependent on the conditions of the passengers as specified in the policy.
4) Hospitalization expenses:
The policy covers medical expenses up to Rs 2,00,000 incurred during the treatment of an injury sustained during the trip.
5) Transportation of mortal remains:
If an insured passenger dies during a trip due to an accident then the insurance company will provide Rs 10,000 for transportation of mortal remains to the passenger's place of residence or a cremation or burial ground.
How To Claim The Policy?
If the insured passenger or their legal heir wants to claim the benefits available under the policy, then a detailed statement about the claims needs to be sent to the nearest office of the insurance company within four months of incident.
