Because it uses a custom game engine (not doom engine) and a super FX 2 chip doing the heavy lifting. Still one of my favorite ports because it has the most level accuracy and boss monsters that a lot of other ports didn't at the time.

But what's weird to me about that is that most SNES emulations problems are useally the sound being slightly off rather then the graphics, maybe it's because Doom uses the Super FX chip.

People tend to bash it only for its "earthquake effect" and lack of zbuffer, but when you analyze he's detailed textures and models in its most demanding games, not even the best graphically games on the N64 and 90s PC games couldnt even match it, maybe except two exceptions on PC that are debatable. The PS1 version could have probably run a lot better (at the expense of texture warping) if they had used native hardware rendering rather then a software renderer that emulated the look of the original Doom engine. There’s a lot of 30fps PS1 games that have significantly more polygonal detail then Doom.

@@theblah12 Yeah, i know, and also is impressive how Quake 2 has 4p split screen on PS1 but Doom requires obligatory link cable to only a max of 2p. That, along with the fact that Doom engine games had crazy size for the Memory Card (Duke Nukem 3d and Hexen at least, thats probably the reason why Doom use passwords), is like the engine just doesnt work perfectly on the console for some reason, despite the PS1 is capable to run things much more demanding..

I respect your opinion, but I have to ask what you mean by "better graphics" when like the other console ports many walls had repeated textures. I'm also a bit confused about the "exclusive levels". I've played the entirety of the PS1 version and not only were details removed in comparison to the original PC version, but there weren't any levels on the PS1 that couldn't be played on the PC version. If anything, it was the opposite as it used many Doom II Master Levels for the Final Doom PS1 release albeit not the complete set of the Master Levels and the PS1 never got the TNT or Plutonia packs. Don't get me wrong, I do agree that the PS1 version was the best version on the console, but again, it was still a stripped down console port like all the others. Unless by "graphics" you mean the PS1 hardware lighting feature it had - that I did like (still didn't make up for all the removed texturing, though). The missing textures were a problem on ALL the console ports and it really ruined the atmosphere IMO. Edit: I realized that there actually were a few exclusive levels I played on the PS1. Come to think of it... they weren't too bad, either.

How do you remove the borders on 32x? I could never figure it out and so i played it in a windowed mode. Ms Dos version is my fav. Jaguar version was the best available for a while EDIT - the answer is that there was a home-brew Doom remake that improved performance and fixed bugs

I think it's funny how the GBA a tiny small handheld has much better performance that the original home console portts of the 90's, and even more amazing, is that unlike SNES, GBA didn't require chips or any external power, it's the sheer power of the console running at 30 fps, while those 90's home consoles struggle to keep on at 20 fps as much (except for PS1 of course) also, wtf I didn't know that PS1 had the Doom 64 sound effects

GBA was much more powerful than the SNES, and the port itself i think uses the Doom engine, unlike the SNES port who uses a totally new engine made from scratch.

That's not actually entirely true, while the snes port has the most accurate level geometry there are some differences, many secrets are not present in the snes port.

the 32X used to have level layouts similar to the PC, though they were simplified due to memory limits. The simplified level design is inherited from the Jaguar btw.

@@zerotheero I wouldnt say the "simplified" level design counts as a negative point, i would even say is different and thats it (so, again, no negative, just a different experience). Practically the 90% of the times the "simplified" level design translates into a zone without a wall, a different corridor or a zone with less height, in fact, less height in some maps were actually better, as the autoaim in the original can make shooting some enemies very clunky. Is like when people want to criticize unfairly Rayman 2 on PS1, but nevermind.
