Islam is not really a religion it is a deen, a way of life or system. Like any system it is impossible for it to function without it being dominant. As a comparison capitalism tends to focus on the individual disregarding the community, communism meanwhile focuses on the community and forgetting the individual. Islam is recognised as a middle road between the two.
@h.p.b.9099 жыл бұрын
+Abid Hussain +Abid Hussain Interesting, I'd been ignorant of this word/concept until now. It's a useful distinction. It may not be unique among religions in its intent to be universal (see: the "Catholic" Church), but it does make clear why Islam is a legitimate subject of skepticism and inquiry, and why to be skeptical of it -- even as a white male non-believer -- need not have anything at all to do with racism. *Any* system that wants to be universal, and would compel my participation and/or assent, and whose devotees are motivated and in significant cases willing to use coercion and violence to get there -- whether catholicism or Islam, communism or catholicism -- should provoke a healthy distrust among freedom-loving people of all political persuasions. Islam would bore me if it didn't want to -- one day if not now -- want to tell me what to do.
@1ummahabid9 жыл бұрын
So you would rather do whatever is the norm in society right?
@henrypbel9 жыл бұрын
+Abid Hussain no. I want to live under a secular government, because that's the only way to guarantee religious freedom, and because, to the extent possible I want to be free to follow my conscience, wherever that takes me (whether that means embracing cultural norms or rejecting them is beside the point). By definition, if I'm living under a deen (as I understand it), I'm not free to do that -- I have to submit to a theocracy instead. I'm not saying our current capitalist democracy (so-called) is ideal, but it beats any theocracy I can imagine.
@1ummahabid9 жыл бұрын
+henrypbel The Middle East/Asia is not Europe secularism is like a dead horse there. I think that part of the reason why the Arab Spring began was the world witnessing the reemergence of the Asian economies particularly China to a lesser extent India and to a even lesser extent Russia (mainly effecting turkey), this would have at least spurred them on as they want to see the same level of progress. Chances are the more the Asian economies develop the more confident Muslims will become in calling for the resumption of the Khilafah.

The Qur'an says of itself that it is a direct quotation from God, in all its entirety. Saying that uncomfortable readings are just "misunderstandings" or "interpretations", perhaps in bad faith or out of political aims or out of worldly ails, is making the fatal error of confusing raw information (the text as is) with the vague and ultimately unbased hope that religions surely cannot be that destabilizing, unjust or just plain evil. You really should know better. There is really, really bad content in the Qur'an, and it takes a noble idiot to gloss it over.

Perhaps there will be an upsurge of Sufism in the Muslim intelligentsia, that is my prediction and my hope, to the Sufi jihad means an inner spiritual struggle, passages can be metaphorical,it could be compared to the Bhagavad Gita where Krishna and Arjuna are on a battlefield, but it is a battle of the mind and heart, not to be taken literally. I think the Sufis have correctly interpreted this, but the literalists have dominated.

I'm going to come across as anti-religious here, but that's fine. You have nailed the poison that religion is - it's a poison of the mind. An individual, rather than admit that they or their beliefs could be wrong in front of their peer group, feel threatened and insecure enough to dig their heels in and fight against the perceived onslaught. This is natural by the way; it's the amygdala, our primal brain, in action. You cannot fight someone out of a prison of their own making... you have to show them the open door and invite them to leave, or be content to converse through the prison bars that they reside behind.

I'd say he made an error because he either doesn't know, or hides, the fact that that term is created by islamic scholars to shut down discussion. There are info on how to determine if someone is an islamophobe, and it actually boils down to "someone who knows that islam exists but haven't converted yet". In that light, the term is truly useless and only a weapon. We need a counter-measure, and that is "kafferophobe" to put a name on those of the islamic faith that do believe that everybody outside of their specific version of islam (oh, yes, there are conflicts within the ummah because of different views) is somehow a threat to their way of life.

The problem I have with personal "interpretation" is a purely metaphysical one. Out of all the major religions, Islam is clearly the most ambiguous. The Medinan verses juxtapose the Meccan ones; the Hadith is so large you could theologically justify whatever you want as a Muslim. The Qur'an is literally as useless as making a religion out of the various works of Plutarch. It's clearly man-made. It's a danger that reflects our own ego.
@stephen42red276 жыл бұрын
Justin Thomas it's actually the least ambitious. all other religious doctrines have been changed but Islamic doctrines have been preserved due to memorization and oral tradition. I've seen their interpretations, they have a scope of interpretations but their differences are actually minor but all are accepted in islam. imagine a disciple explaining each bible verse, how more clearer would the bible be? that is exactly what the Muslims have. the problem is people like majid doesn't follow that. it's actually him whose not following the scope of interpretation while the islamists do. however the islamists say that they aren't so bad and they are against terrorism and so on and the media wants to demonize them but majid says non they don't represent islam but the islamists say majid is just a liberal more so than a Muslim. so it's really not black and white but this is a complex issue. sometimes I feel if islam was more ambigious there would be less islamism but it's actually barely ambigious. the islamists are just practicing while the majid Muslims are not

I think Maajid main aims is to reform Islam to adopt it's peaceful practices from it's doctrine, first and foremost is to promote the notion to Muslims the reformist movement of Islam by the following points 1. Reject the Policing and political correctness (PC) proliferating in the political circles and mainstream media to open such sensitive topics for critique and open discussions, that's the only way to be able to reach out to believers and practitioners of their faith and challenge their beliefs. 2. Recognizing, accepting and STOP Denying the unpopular texts that promotes corporeal, capital punishment and deaths to non-believers or believers that breaks the laws and teachings from the Qu'ran, and admit that they do exist and originate from the Holy Book of Qu'ran itself; 3. and that offensive Jihad are subjected to use by Islamic groups and Authorities in an attempt to re-establish and revive the Caliphate, and the Glories of the Ottoman empire (In History), often romanticize of it's power, influence and dominance in the world. However dogmatism of it's followers are also quite plainly prevalent and let's see from the verses below why: quran.com/ Surah 9:29 ﭽ ﭾ ﭿ ﮀ ﮁ ﮂ ﮃ ﮄ ﮅ ﮆ ﮇ ﮈ ﮉ ﮊ ﮋ ﮌ ﮍ ﮎ ﮏ ﮐ ﮑ ﮒ ﮓ ﮔ ﮕ ﮖ ﮗ ﮘ ﮙ ﮚ SAHIH INTERNATIONAL Fight those who do not believe in Allah or in the Last Day and who do not consider unlawful what Allah and His Messenger have made unlawful and who do not adopt the religion of truth from those who were given the Scripture - [fight] until they give the jizyah willingly while they are humbled. Most important is the delivery of the critique that opens dialog 2)Who is best prepared to go to debate Reminds me of a debate I went to in my toastmasters class and we at the day of debate were informed that we were to take the opposite side and defend it . as a turk from turkey, i can easily say sam harris has no idea what he is talking about. the other guy is knowledged about the problem. this could have never been a debate. sam harris enjoys sitting at the easy end of the rhetoric, where trivialization and simplistic approach will win him applauds. things dont work like that irl. nothing has ever been solved with his shallow and impressionist approach.

Nothing will be solved until Islam is eradicated from the earth. There are certain ideologies like Marxism, Nazism, Communism and Islam that just need to be eradicated. A cult that teaches its followers that all none followers are lower than dogs and pigs (while saying Dogs and pigs are the worst/dirty creatures on earth) needs to be eradicated.

Honestly looking at Maajid, if I'm a radical Jihadist I want him dead, the guy is skilled, tough and sharp - I wouldn't want to lose a dude like that from any team I played on. He's a Navy Seal - he'd be a powerful weapon under anythings control! I'm thankful to Western Civilization that he's been rescued!

A fascinating discussion. A little irritation though was that Juliette Kayymen made it clear for the audience to make brief and clear questions. Not one questioner did this and instead we had longwinded preambles to their questions. Having watched countless debates over the years, why is it that so few people grasp the appeal for brevity?

''submitting'' ... isn't gonna lead to peace , just the fantasy OF it it's literally what the word means , islam = submit religions always tell people it's doing one thing , while behind your back it's doing the complete opposite , which is bringing down your own human value , so they can get your money , that's it ... nothing more , nothing less it's always about scamming people EVERY ''good thing'' people get from religions , ISN'T FROM religion , but from SECULAR HUMANITY UNDERLINING the religion , which can be achieved WITHOUT religion religion needs to DIE in a dark corner somewhere and just be forgotten , people should just take a secular approach to life and treat people like you want to be treated , no religion needed what so ever so , no need to kill people if they don't want to participate anymore , wear a veil around your head , wear a noose around your neck , suppress other people , stoning your children , no cutting of foreskins , no cutting of clitoris , no drowning people , no burning people alive , no chopping of hands and feet , i could go on like this for the rest of my life and still not be finished with all the lovely things religious people have come up with to HURT OTHER people ... and especially no ''thinking you're living in reality , when you're CLEARLY NOT'' fucking dumb ass horrible religious people need to go the way of the Dodo and just be wiped clear of the Earth , so the rest of us can heal this place and the people in it

They make great points, and I largely agree with them. But the idea that Sam Harris isn't an anti-muslim bigot BECAUSE he listens to Sufi mystical music is ridiculous. Lots of Nazis listened to black jazz. Were they not racists? To be clear, I don't think Harris is a bigot. I largely agree with Maajid and Sam's analysis, but I disagree with their tactics regarding how best to reform Islam. For instance, their insistence that the POTUS identify and denounce Islamism rather than generic "extremist fundamentalism" is misguided. The people in the muslim community who need to be convinced are not going to respond to the apostate POTUS's calls for reforming Islam. This is true of any Western leader - they will be perceived as outsiders, and good-faith attempts to encourage reform of Islam will only be useful to violent Islamists who seek to portray the West as anti-muslim. Only people from within the Muslim community will have the requisite credibility to engage in this kind of critique of Islamist ideology.

Thanks for fixing the sound, I went through the agonizing faulty audio in the previous video... BUT didn't you know that you could have fixed the audio in the last video without taking it off? :) There's an option on KZbin to do it - right here in video management... :) Not one Harvard student knew this? :) Not one? :)

The muslims behave as they do because they are are brainwashed and ordained to follow the tenets of the cult called islam. If we wish their behaviour to change for the better we must insist that all the hateful supremacist neo-political violence-inciting parts are expunged from the KSH (koran, sira, hadees).

Bigotry is in defending Islam. If one says that all Nazists shate the Nazist ideology it is ok, but you are saying that it is not ok to say the same for Muslims?
@Gamla1238 жыл бұрын
It was not the topic of discussion, but both speakers repeatedly pointed out the intolerance of regressive liberals. I was especially struck by how Maajid Nawaz is branded an "islamophobe" by white liberals. The great ideology that's been hijacked is not Islam. It's Liberalism. Very interesting and necessary discussion.

Maajid actually complained about people judging him on factors other than his character and behavior and then in the next sentence judged them on factors other than their character and behavior. Namely their skin color is a reason for them to not speak. C'mon man!! And he doesn't help his case when he says he was being picked on for his political opinions in Egypt when in fact he was recruiting for a terrorist organization. I want to see more reformers like Maajid but he doesn't help his case with disproportionately playing a victim and saying what many will see as him trying to silence critics based upon pc culture.

@Check proofs of Islam in my playlists Why obfuscate about Sam's thought's on free will? He calls it an illusion in the circumstantial sense - meaning every decision you make has actually been influenced by preceding causes and is not really an independent will that arose in that moment of time. A perfectly rational philosophical position. He does not advocate that since free will is an illusion, individual freedoms should be subverted. That is not what he is saying. Also, Sam has indeed beefed with apologists before.

At least 20 countries. most of them Islamic states, still have laws that prohibited apostasy. In these countries, it is a criminal offense for a person to abandon his faith to convert to a different religion or declare himself an atheist. In Iran, Pakistan, Somalia, Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Qatar and Yemen, there are still laws that punish apostasy with capital punishment, although in many countries it is rarely applied. In some nations, the accused are offered a chance to repent and accept Islam rather than face death. Other punishments imposed for apostasy include imprisonment, flogging and fines.

Islam. Favorite and probably the most interesting subject in the world nowadays. I like these conversations. We need more intellectual debates and discussions about various topics. And why not Islam? :) It's just that i missed them talk about how do they define Islam in the first place, how do they view it, and what is their actual intellectual experience with Islamic knowledge, and desirably personal experience with Muslims and Islam. So many times the talk is negative, criticizing and the most important of all, it's partial and only scratching on the surface. Dear thinkers, discussions about important topics need to be more deep than this, if we actaually want to make them productive and solution oriented. I would have so many questions to ask these thinkers, and challenge some of their claims. They should continue with this. I would like to see the clash of Sam Harris with Tariq Ramadan, not about if Islam is religion of peace or not, but what is the best system of principles or the ideology for the world today. Having in mind all the problems in wrong interpretations of Islam, i still don't see any alternative to Islam. So it is no wonder why those who don't like it, are trying to fight it, and present it in a skewed way.
@someoneelse2938 жыл бұрын
+A Human i either misunderstand, or you are religious. you ask, "what is the best system of principles or ideology for the world today?" then state that you, "don't see any alternative to islam."
