George Galloway interrupted by student who accuses him of being a racist.
Filmed on Monday 14th October 2013.
ABOUT GEORGE GALLOWAY:
Few contemporary politicians have attracted as much controversy as George Galloway. A Labour MP from 1987 to 2003, he was an outspoken critic of the policies of Tony Blair and New Labour, in particular the decision to invade Iraq. Fiery comments such as ""the best thing British troops can do is to refuse to obey illegal orders"" saw Galloway expelled from the Labour Party. But Galloway returned to the political fray by founding the Respect Party and winning Bethnal Green and Bow in the 2005 General Election. Mr Galloway re-entered Parliament in this March as MP for Bradford West and has recently provoked controversy and criticism with his comments on the rape charges against Wikileaks' Julian Assange.
ABOUT THE OXFORD UNION SOCIETY:
The Union is the world's most prestigious debating society, with an unparalleled reputation for bringing international guests and speakers to Oxford. It has been established for 190 years, aiming to promote debate and discussion not just in Oxford University, but across the globe.

@@nextlevelrelaxed615 oh really, were they that, let’s say, maybe 50 years ago. I’m being generous here. Iraq had the highest literacy rate and education performance in the region prior to the US invasion. Colonialism didn’t completely subside up until the 60s. If it wasn’t for the west’s deliberate milking of resources, purposeful and strategic divnisioning of the people of the east and racist and oriental attitudes maybe they would be living decent lives. Take your ignorance and stupidity some place else. There’s no room for fallacious, idiotic people here. Let us also remind you that Europe was a, how did you want to describe it… oh yes, a crap hole 77 years ago. Don’t get it twisted, westerners are still as barbaric as they were before, they just moved their playing field abroad. Enough with your hypocrisy and ignorance.

Darraaz Shahbaaz There are much more people in the West that can think with their own heads than you think. But George Galloway is one of the rare politicians who defends his truth in public, no matter what. In Germany, there was a very well known reporter and writer, Peter Scholl-Latour, who through his entire life has tried to educate the West about the world and people in the Islamic world. You have to live in a country and speak its people`s language to be able to know at least a little bit more about their culture and ways of thinking. And since there are so many Islamic countries that don`t even try to understand each other, it is nearly impossible for the West to understand their world. But one thing is true for every people on this planet: When we are sad, we cry, when we are happy, we laugh, all mothers love their children and we don`t want our loved ones to suffer. No normal human being wants war and when we get cut, we bleed red blood. What else do we need to have in common in order to live together in peace?

Is democracy automatically the best option for all people at all times? Democracy in its pure form is just the rule of the majority. If the majority is violent fanatic or plain evil - then democracy would not make them enlightened and liberal - it would just give them power. Hitler of Nazi Germany was democratically elected. Hamas - who wishes world Jihad - was democratically elected. Democracy is just a framework - and without actual values to fill it with it would only cause havoc.
@MisterBlueSky1000
@MisterBlueSky1000 10 жыл бұрын
Marcus Glutensis Not quite sir. He did get the support of the majority of parties to gain full power. See this link: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hitler#Day_of_Potsdam_and_the_Enabling_Act The majority of Iranians also supported Humeini at first. Mao who has killed about 40 to 70 million Chinese - would win elections today if he ran... The majority can make mistakes - and can be tempted to make ethical transgressions. Democracy without checks and balances would only tell you what the majority thinks - which does not turn them into liberal or kind people.
@MisterBlueSky1000
@MisterBlueSky1000 10 жыл бұрын
***** Maybe the point of democracy is not what it gives - but what it prevents? All other options ("enlightened despotism" - "merit-based aristocracy" - "plutocracy" and so on) - historically do get seriously abusive and even genocidal pretty fast... And even the best-intentioned people often cease to be benevolent when given too much power. They buckle because they can't manage it - because no one is meant to have so much responsibility over others. Even tyrannical CEOs have to obey the democratic vote of their consumers. So democracy is a way to manage public matters in a relatively less harmful way. And mind you - justice requires that those who decide what to do should be those standing to be affected by the results of such actions. And that is the public - smart or dumb. I can agree with you, that to have democracy to bring better results - we need to educate as many people as possible. And let's have each one of us pass a basic relevant exam - so people would have to be better informed, and would realize that voting is not a right, it's a privilege, and an important one. So people would sense the great gift of voting and would be proud to be informed voters. As for the importance of each vote, I differ from you: It doesn't matter what percentage your vote counts for. What matters is that YOU KNOW that you have done and will keep doing your best for what you hold dear. Devotion to true values is much more important than results out there - because where you truly live is not with the polls... You live with your own mind and conscience. The more you do your best for what you hold dear - the more genuine and great your life is - independent of results out there. And the more genuine you are in upholding true values (such as responsibility, justice, caring, compassion, creativity, trust, etc) - the more you may find yourself becoming influential with other people... Each genuine person adds up. Each genuine act adds up. Society is sustained thanks to the great "little people" who answer the call of their conscience and do what is beneficial and right.

MisterBlueSky1000 True, but both of those parties were voted into by a very desperate people, while also making it hard to pick alternatives. And what you've actually described is mob rule. Democracy allows debates between two ideas, information in and can reach a decision by an informed mass. Mob rule is, essentially, what is in America and the situation in the Middle East; my way or the high way.

This video did not age so well in his opinion on Egypt since the country's GDP ranking has been climbing up the ladder, unemployment rates going down, and corruption cleansing measures have been taking place in the last few years. A coup is a coup, but Al-Sisi is not as much of a dictator as people would think. Politics in Egypt have been stabilising, political prisoners have been getting pardons, national security is no longer on high alert. Jobs are being created, new cities being built, complete new infrastructure is being made (transportation, electricity, water, healthcare, and education), all in all, he's the kind of a leader any country would need: someone who is patriotic and actually loves his country, not only after position of power. so no, I disagree with Dr. George on that part even though I agree with almost everything else he said.

in other words, if Al-Sisi rose to power against people's wishes (which I very highly doubt as literally everyone hated the muslim brotherhood after their candidate was rightfully elected president, and if the general population knew a way to get a president out of his position legally before his term was over as instated by democratic laws and orders, they would have definitely taken this measure, but since this didn't happen, not many people actually minded the coup.) EVEN if he rose against people's wishes, if a fair election took place now, I believe Al-Sisi would rightfully win the majority. He proved that he's capable of leading this country for the time being, and I as one of the people who hated him and his regime for the longest time since he came into the picture started changing my mind when I saw progress and a luster of prosperity for my country on the horizon, and for the first time in forever, I feel proud of being Egyptian.

ay Mr.Galloway when you say democracy its not compatible with Islam , you should say democracy its not compatible with Christianity. you just said not compatible with being Britain which it make the example wrong first place . that's firstly , secondly me I live in a Muslim country called Tunisia Im Tunisian and I have seen that 100% Democracy and religions are incompatible they are even in total contradiction Specially in the Muslim world. Mr.Galloway I respect you a lot no one is perfect and you have some wrong interpretation sometime but mostly you are right in most of the subjects. Peace

I'm sorry, but I don't want to be an emperor. That's not my business. I don't want to rule or conquer anyone. I should like to help everyone if possible; Jew, Gentile, black man, white. We all want to help one another. Human beings are like that. We want to live by each other's happiness, not by each other's misery. We don't want to hate and despise one another. In this world there is room for everyone, and the good earth is rich and can provide for everyone. The way of life can be free and beautiful, but we have lost the way. Greed has poisoned men's souls, has barricaded the world with hate, has goose-stepped us into misery and bloodshed. We have developed speed, but we have shut ourselves in. Machinery that gives abundance has left us in want. Our knowledge has made us cynical; our cleverness, hard and unkind. We think too much and feel too little. More than machinery, we need humanity. More than cleverness, we need kindness and gentleness. Without these qualities, life will be violent and all will be lost. The airplane and the radio have brought us closer together. The very nature of these inventions cries out for the goodness in men; cries out for universal brotherhood; for the unity of us all. Even now my voice is reaching millions throughout the world, millions of despairing men, women, and little children, victims of a system that makes men torture and imprison innocent people. To those who can hear me, I say, do not despair. The misery that is now upon us is but the passing of greed, the bitterness of men who fear the way of human progress. The hate of men will pass, and dictators die, and the power they took from the people will return to the people. And so long as men die, liberty will never perish. Soldiers! Don't give yourselves to brutes, men who despise you, enslave you; who regiment your lives, tell you what to do, what to think and what to feel! Who drill you, diet you, treat you like cattle, use you as cannon fodder. Don't give yourselves to these unnatural men - machine men with machine minds and machine hearts! You are not machines, you are not cattle, you are men! You have the love of humanity in your hearts! You don't hate! Only the unloved hate; the unloved and the unnatural. Soldiers! Don't fight for slavery! Fight for liberty! In the seventeenth chapter of St. Luke, it is written that the kingdom of God is within man, not one man nor a group of men, but in all men! In you! You, the people, have the power, the power to create machines, the power to create happiness! You, the people, have the power to make this life free and beautiful, to make this life a wonderful adventure. Then in the name of democracy, let us use that power. Let us all unite. Let us fight for a new world, a decent world that will give men a chance to work, that will give youth a future and old age a security. By the promise of these things, brutes have risen to power. But they lie! They do not fulfill that promise. They never will! Dictators free themselves but they enslave the people. Now let us fight to fulfill that promise. Let us fight to free the world! To do away with national barriers! To do away with greed, with hate and intolerance! Let us fight for a world of reason, a world where science and progress will lead to all men's happiness. Soldiers, in the name of democracy, let us all unite! Charlie Chaplin

Self help guidelines From the ground up A Maslow has suggested the following steps: physiological and safety needs, love and belonging, esteem, self actualization. As a 'consumer' of self help I have encountered selective issues; some kind of indication about the trends of a book or video would help: from down to earth, first encounters such as relationships and attachment, the role of gratitude, Spirituality and creativity. An agreed label associated with these steps or a refusal to relate to classifications could eventually be considered when in need of advice Self development offers a wide range of trends and these very necessary paths towards truth and well being may need to have a simplified approach. It is my opinion as well to mention that reaching a Spiritual level may have or not to be associated with a specific Religion.

Of course, the planets move as the Heliocentric model predicts. Of course, the Geocentric model has consistently failed to account for the anomalies. However, I won’t accept that Geocentric model is wrong because it was believed to be true by millions for more than 1500 years. (If someone takes issue with the analogy, substitute Geocentrism with Fascism and Stalinism. Because they had millions of fervent adherents too.) What Galloway really says is that he won’t change his mind no matter what history shows.
