I don't think it will be successful, at all, if you take a very religious society and "un-convert" the entire population to atheism in a very short time period. Most of us need common stories and common values to build a coherent society, regular ceremonies and holidays to celebrate with friends and family, transition rituals that helps us with the mayor events in life like funerals, getting married and so forth. Religion also provides community and purpose to a lot of people. I don't think it's a very nice thing to do if we only pull the rag from under the feet of entire populations without having some kind of viable alternative available. And I think a reformed version of Islam, such as what imam Tawhidi teaches would be much preferred to the current practice.

I’m 40 minutes in and so far Tawhidi is so incoherent, he’s all over the place jumping from one question to the next as opposed to Daniel who seems very articulate with his critique of modernity. This could have been a great discussion surrounding Islam and the contemporary world, but I feel that because Tawhidi lacked the intellectual capability to engage with Daniel with the problems of modernity, he had to retreat into muddled, clouded theology with little link to the issues Daniel raised initially.

Daniel only spoke in vague generalities. Modernity isn't even a thing. What does that mean? He never really says. When is the world not modern, exacty? This is one of those pieces of general apologetics theists level against secularism but theyre never very consistent or specific about what the problems are or how religion is supposed to work now to fix those problems, when for millennia the conflicts of humanity have often been spurred on by religions, across all spectra of religions. So at best religion is a neutral factor. At best.

No You I disagree. I think Daniel was very specific with his exposition of modernity. For example, he makes it clear around the nine minute mark that his concern is not with modern technology, rather modern values. From here, we can infer that the danger in modernity, for Daniel, entails the epistemological values espoused through the enlightenment period which have carried through until today. These enlightenment products include many things we take for granted such as freedom, equality, liberty, and to some extent individualism etc. At one point of the video, Daniel even makes a case how these may cast a danger to premodern values that were far superior for a stable society. For example, his example of baby formula milk being promoted by corporate businesses so women can utilise their ‘individualism’ and ‘freedom’ to get back to work quicker after pregnancy, rather than breastfeeding their child and creating a bond with their child. We now see that human breastfeeding, once a collective and family oriented action (collectivism as opposed to individualism is supported by Islam), being eroded away. Now, you can object and say that Islam isn't the only solution to this, however, Daniel could have given his response by suggesting how Islam is better apt to deal with these issues over other solutions. The point is, the discussion should have transitioned this way, rather than through muddled theology. By the way, you don’t have to be a theist to level critiques against secularism and modernity. It’s just more convent for theists to show how despite living in a more irreligious society, we haven’t really gotten much better then we would like to think

But for me personally, all the sectors of Islam that have existed after the death of Muhammad are equally misguided which only bring enmity that will not end. And what do you think that has caused Islam to split into several sectors with different teachings? Conflict and power struggle between fellow Muslims is one of the causes and split into several sectors of different teachings. People are also becoming wiser to believe Muhammad's illogical teachings, so they change them little by little with the passage of time. In just 50 short years, the Kaaba that had stood for centuries under the pagan religion collapsed due to the their internal war… Since then, the Kaaba was moved to Mecca from the origin birthplace of Islam in the city of Petra, Jordan during the rule of the Abbasid Empire. That is the fate of those who are in the house of Islam regardless of whether their worship is accepted by the big god or by the big rock as long as they can still win in war and politics. Is this a religion that often accuses other religions of going astray for worshiping idols?

what Tahawidi is doing is propagating his version of Islam which I must mention, though he is trying very hard to imply is the Shii version and thus the real version of Islam in his opinion, is infact nowhere near the mainstream Shii Ithna Ashari version of Islam. As far as the biography of Muhammad is concerned there is little to no difference between the Sunni and Shii versions. And as for the theological arguments for the scope and definition of the concept of infallibility of Muhammad, the difference of opinion has existed among Sunni scholarship as well. Infact the current Shii aqeedah in terms of matters of theology is the opinion of Mutazilla which at a time was the mainstream Sunni school of aqeedah.

I was born catholic, but decided to renounce religion a long time ago. I judged my moral compass to be superior to that of organized religion. The rampant sexism and homophobia was a great turn off to me. The universe created us with the capacity for reason so we could use it. Handing the reigns to a system of beliefs that originates in the dark ages will land you in the middle of a disturbing Euthyphro dilemma of your own making. I realize some people genuinly feel they need the structure of religion (or a sense of belonging.) However, when I see people excuse the inexcusable in religions, I usually think they are weak minded. I have had plenty of spiritual/psychic experiences in my life, so I know we have not scratched the true nature of reality or of consciousness yet. Being spiritual does not necessarily mean having to shackle youself, and your capacity to reason, to dogmatic religions and outdated social norms.

What was wrong during the 7th century is still wrong (even though modernity tries to change that) but not to an atheist (or theistic liberals). Your morals are subjective and think you make up your own purpose. That's just as "rational" as men like Hitler or Kim Jung Un making up their purpose in this life and their own morals. Our beliefs are akin to other abstract ideas like the US Constitution,Human Rights,Democracy,etc. in other words,ideas that cannot be proven scientifically. Yet it is important to adhere to an ideology that can retain overbearing values. Atheists don't really have that. In fact only thing keeping you people line is the remaining Judeo-Christian values that the West still retains.

Tawhidi spent a big portion of the debate trying to prove the Quran has been altered, I don’t understand how he still claims to be a Muslim. Also in the description you’ve described tawhidi as an “ex-atheist Muslim” you can’t be an atheist and a Muslim, very contradictory, which makes me think tawhidi “came back” to Islam not to follow it but to try and disprove it.

Don’t attack these three. All these guys are great, and necessary if we are going to coexist. The fact that they are here having the conversation and are willing to listen to reason is excellent.
