As an atheist, I understand that the 'why' is more of a metaphysics inquiry, and is worth exploring as well. Do note though, that we as atheists don't need an external motivation. From what I can tell, personally, there is no god, which is just my view of the world. My motivation, like that for most people, is genuine intellectual curiosity and an attempt to study the world to make it better for my fellow humans. I'm not a fan of the concept that a lack of belief in a god somehow makes everything meaningless. If anything, we're more motivated, as we view this as the one and only life to live.

With that said, I support your push for exploration of science and its integration with your religious views. I'd just caution from falling into the trap of letting your religious views negate whatever scientific findings you may come across. Otherwise, you run into bad science, which becomes a flavor of bias.
