I live in a Muslim country in West Africa where polygamy is common. All of the men are for it and there is a lot of child marriage (usually between 12-15 years old) in some communities. Here, second wives are usually treated as live-in slaves who care for the husband and the first wife. Men even feel like having four wives is a REQUIREMENT to be a good Muslim. I have asked men before what happens to all the men who can't get married because all the women are already married, and they said they'll go somewhere else (as if neighboring villages don't have the exact same problem). I lived with a family who was one husband, one wife, and they were very clear that monogamy is preferable, but too many boys and girls in my community have warped views on consent, sexual relationships, sexual satisfaction, etc. I did an activity asking high schools boys and girls if they agreed with certain statements. One statement was, "I have the right to say no to sex at any time." Half of the girls and most of the boys disagreed because part of the wife's duty is to submit sexually to her husband, even if she does not want to. My job is not to tell them that they are wrong (because they are children and don't really know better), but to provide an alternative view. We have a long way to go to breaking these ideas--even in the West.

I had twin brothers as students who came from a conservative Muslim country. All students talked about their lives, families, etc., so it came up one day that their mother had been a 2nd or 3rd wife and, when their father divorced her, she had no rights to her children. They had not seen their mother since they were babies because she has no rights. I was sad for them, but they said they felt no sadness because they don't remember her. Yet, their mother and millions like her have a lifetime of sadness now because they have no rights to their children after divorce. Misery within the marriage and misery afterwards. I can't imagine. This religion/cult and the concept of polygamy take an enormous toll on women and children.

I actually had a short conversation with an Egyptian modern girl on saturday. She is in a relationship with a German guy and has a very good job etc. We came to discuss something about integration and how culture can stand in the way of integration. I was a bit irritated when she put me on the spot and asked what kind of cultural traits harm integration. So I said e.g. violence against women in Islam. She looked me straight in the eyes and said that there is nothing in the qran that allows violence against women (she came across a bit arrogant at this point). I showed her Sure 4:34 on wikipedia. She was a bit confused in the beginning and didn't understand it at first and tried to argue that it only says that you should divide your bed etc. Later on she even looked into an online version of the qran into said Sure and said that no, no, no - the qran is like a poem and even scholars are confused how Mohammed could something so poetic without an education, which is why Muslims believe it's the word of God. She said that you can't take the qran literally, blablabla... Well, I'm certain that she realised that I was right which destroyed a belief in her lovely Islam. I'm sure that this interaction won't change her mind on Islam. But maybe it will make her look more into the qran and learn more about her own religion and find out just how peaceful her religion is. Btw - she's a lovely girl and I really don't mind that she's Muslim at all. I just react allergic, if someone claims arrogantly something, when I know better and that something is actually her religion and not mine... I wish her and her boyfriend the best ❤

1 of the commandments states that "while already married, it is a sin to be lusting for/after an other woman besides your wife" but when you want to partake in polygamy, you want to included an other woman in your current household, "one must lust/fancy an other woman first before going into the whole contract marriage aspect..." Monogamy was the greatest single advance in women's rights in history over the past 5000+ years. By tying a man to one woman, if a guy wants to be happy in life, he'd better make her happy. Since there are approximately even numbers of male/female babies, it cannot be the general intention of "the world" to have 1 sex practice multiple marriages. To the extent you have one, you need the other.

No, Quran explicitly permits monogamy and encourages polygamy. See the latter part of the verse, which says "if you cannot afford, then marry one or live with what you have". Not that polygamy is good, but religious texts are there to be thoroughly read, not picked and chosen with hedonistic motives like Muhammad (piece be upon him).

One aspect of polygamy that you forgot to mention is its wider impact on society as a whole. A lot of men will be left over, without a family to care for, as a result of polygamy. This will inherently create an unstable society by itself. Incel men could in itself lead to instability, religious fanatism and war as these men are not occupied with raising a family as they should in a modern society. Also, a society that constantly generates a lot of left-over men, will very likely lean towards expansionism and a conquest mindset. So I guess there is little surprise why there are lots and lots of young arab and African men pouring into Europe. Perhaps they are the left-overs.
