Islamophobia: Pig heads left outside a mosque in South Korea • The Observers - France 24

Since 2014, a group of Muslim students living in Daegu, South Korea have been meeting to pray at a home near their university. In late 2020, they got permission to fix up the house and turn it into a mosque to better accommodate Muslims in the area, but their plans have been hampered by resistance from locals which has, at times, turned into open Islamophobia. Those opposed to the mosque have even placed pig heads in front of the prayer site, or called the students "terrorists".

Since it happens to be an Islamic building which is being built against their will, they’re placing pig heads to discourage the Muslim students. If it was a church with loud bells or a concert stage, they would probably protest those as well, but since this is a situation involving Muslims who they know consider pigs to be filthy animals, they’re putting pig heads to help discourage them.

That's not Islamophobia. The problem is that Muslims are trying to build a mosque in the middle of a residential area. The mosque and the houses are only about 1 meter apart. Even if it was a temple or a church, Daegu citizens would have opposed it. First, The reason why I point out muslim is because while religious extremists do exist on all side, Islam stands out the most by their non-negotiable attitude. Christians make you annoying by visiting your home when you mind your own business but thats about it. They don’t go crazy by beating up women because they don’t wear certain costume nor trying to legislate religious ideas such as sharia. We cannot coexist with muslim radicals peacefully. I’m an atheist and I should be punished by law according to muslim extremist just because I have different opinion. And yes many muslims aren’t like that. I even have some friends in Zanzibar Tanzania and they don’t care about that I’m atheist but I know for a fact that they will never going to stand up for me and remain silence when radical muslims raising their voice and force me to convert to Islam. Second, I do aware about shinrikyo terror. But it happened more than 20yrs ago and shinrikyo was not even a thing in Japan. It was very small cult with less than 2000 followers. Was it a religious terror attack? Technically, yes but was the shinrikyo big enough to survive after the event? No it died immediately because most Japanese thought it was stupid cult and scam. All people who have responsibility were arrested, prosecuted and went prison, executed. I also think comparing very small, short lived cult to one of the biggest religions in the world is bit reach and unfair.
