Joan Collins was only 24 y/o in this amazing movie! 😍 Dorothy Dandridge is one of the most beautiful and talented women in the history of cinematography.

Love this film, if not the theme of prejudice. Impressed by Belafonte, James Mason, Dorothy Dandridge, Joan Collins, Joan Fontaine, Stephen Boyd, and Patricia Owens (Sayonara & The Fly being her other films) in their performances. Great scenes that were captured during filming of the movie. One of those pictures one doesn't mind seeing repeatedly. Thank you for posting it.

I'm now watching it for the first time - I had heard that the Farley Hill property featured prominently in this movie many years ago but never got a chance to see it. Based on the scenery it looks like they filmed it on more than one island. Interestingly there was a story about the ruins of the Farley Hill Great House in today's newspaper!

It needs to be repaired and placed on the National Register of Historic Places. My dad's old school JC Price HS in Salisbury is on this register as of three years ago. JC Price was African-American and the first President of Livingstone College. And the origonal JC Price HS which was a daycare/kindergarden school where I did my student teaching many years ago and is located not too far from Livingstone College in Salisbury,NC is being restored and is also on the register as well. The Belafonte family should did this.

It really was in the 50s; my parents were from Barbados, and Mum was a nanny for planter's families. They had cooks, maids, nannies and gardeners. There were fees for secondary education beyond grade 8. The planter's ladies didn't do much, and changed for dinner each evening. That all changed in the 60s with politicians who represented the majority of the electorate, instead of the landowners.

According to her in an interview which can be viewed on KZbin this is the role she wanted. She said she wanted her next film after Carmen Jones to be as far away from Carmen as possible. He doesn't want her culturally appropriating and trivialising his traditions as playtime for the rich white folk. He's trying to educate her, not dress her up as a Caribbean doll. IT"s just a movie a work of fiction written by screenwriter Alfred Hayes based on the 538-page novel by Alec Waugh. It's not all these people at Fox. It's one person. Darryl F. Zanuck was the president of the studio at the time and producer of the film. Scripts are sent to the actors. The actors read the scripts. If they like the script they accept the role. In the case of Doroty Dandridge [who was under contract to 20th century] she said she wanted her next film after "Carmen Jones" to be as far away from Carmen as possible. Less than ten minutes in and the woman are already wrangling poor James Mason. Wanna live a sane life? Disregard the women. "Yes, dear" the hell outta them, and then do what you want. Their entire lives revolve around deceit and deception. Baiting and entrapment. And don't forget revenge. They will hold a grudge until the day they die. The difference between a man and a woman is like the difference between a dog and a cat. A dog is happy with his food and walking around. A cat is watching and thinking. Thinking when to POUNCE! OMG, I scared myself that time. Yeah, it's the age-old baloney every time. A man is out of his league. Better to take to the whip. Lay down the law. Keep your own books and live your own life. Women are good for only one thing. Cooking.
