There was an incident opposite my house a few years ago. A criminal gang had tracked a member of a rival gang to my area and tried to shoot him. The bullet went through the window of a shop. I heard the shot and saw the shooters escape. Within just a few minutes of my hearing the shot, there were not only at least 10 police cars and police officers everywhere, but helicopters were flying over, and there were 3 armed officers. They were so quick that the helicopters spotted the getaway car. Apparently, the driver was driving very erratically. Within 5 minutes of the police arriving, the criminals were arrested, according to the officer who came to interview me (they interviewed all of the neighbours). I was amazed at how quickly the police got here, though there is a police station nearby.

From U.K.: I’m in my 70s and Volunteer as an Appropriate Adult. This involves befriending and taking care of people being held in police custody. The most important thing I’ve learned is that people are multi faceted. Even a mentally ill violent man is capable of being social and showing kindness. The fear of crime and criminals can lead to exaggerating any real danger. Once you start to talk to the homeless and the drug addicts etc. The fear subsides and the reality of low risk from people sets in.

Various types of guns, including various types of handguns and even assault rifles, are perfectly legal in the UK - they're just massively regulated and monitored to the point that most people assume they are illegal. Just applying for a licence, many US-minded people would fall at the first fence when asked why they need a gun - not only is 'personal protection' considered an inadequate reason, it is considered actively negative as it suggests a paranoid mindset and clear indication to shoot people when just feeling threatened. Even seeing armed police units is rare and tends to make people feel alarmed as it shows there is a situation in the vicinity that requires such dangerous (but specially trained) force.

CCTV is nothing to worry about unless you are up to no good ! The M.O.T is carried out once a car is 3 years old. Then you HAVE to have it done every year. No M.O.T means you cannot legally drive the car on the road. Same goes for insurance and car tax. There are videos online of M.O.Ts being carried out and UK driving tests. You need to watch one. Not all police carry tasers in the UK. It's a personal preference. Only specialist police have access to guns in the UK.

The issue of feeling like you do or do not need to walk around with a weapon, is because it is a catch-22. As long as other people are allowed to go around packing heat, then you also need a gun to defend yourself. The UK does however have a problem with escalating knife crimes and stabbings in some areas, and to be honest, I wouldn't mind some protection in my pocket if I had to walk through certain places. CCTV is all well and good after the fact, or during an active police monitoring sting, but they don't tend to prevent much crime. They don't have enough eyes to watch all the cameras 24/7

Even the police that are allowed to use guns are not allowed to carry or use them except in exceptional circumstances and even then only when they have been given clearance to do so At all other times the guns (pistols and rifles) are locked in an armoured vehicle Even with crimes where there is a chance of severe injury the Uk police will try to talk the criminal down before reverting to violence especially in crowded areas where there is a chance of a member of the public being injured

Most police stations do have an armed unit, but they don't get used much. We do have the equivalent of SWAT so generally when armed response is needed it will be them turning up in a van. UK police are trained in unarmed defence and to de-escalate a situation if possible so a situation does not spiral into mayhem, injury or collateral damage (individual experiences will vary wildly however because some police are in it for the power trip).

Just to reaffirm about MOT’s (Ministry of Transport) test. These although as Katlyn explained are an annual test, there are a few exceptions. These are new cars, which doesn’t have to be tested until the third year, or if your car is 41 yrs old and technically doesn’t need an MOT. However, your insurance company may require your car to be tested to remain legally insured. The traffic police have cars which carry what’s known as ANPR ( automatic number plate recognition) cameras. If you or your car doesn’t have a licence, insurance or an MOT, then it will ping the police and they will stop you. They then have the right (if you can’t prove that whatever is amiss) to cease your car with immediate effect, and either arrest you or give you a ticket and a court summons. Good luck if you ever get caught as they have been known to either sell the car on at auction, crush it or take it over and use it as an enforcement tool themselves. E.g, turn it into a police car.

Before you get to take your driving test, you have to pass the theory test. Knowledge of road signs, speed limits on each type of road, stopping distances at various speeds, and conditions how rain effects stopping distance etc. Safety checks of the car, oil level etc. Hazard perception, video of various scenes where you identify the upcoming hazards which may or may not require an action on your part. If you pass the theory you can go on to the actual driving test. Which is more intensive in the UK, as most people choose the manual transmission test (in the UK if you pass your test in an automatic transmission, your not allowed to drive manual transmission cars), hence you have to learn clutch control, gear changing, hill starts etc etc.

I'm sure some more knowledgeable viewers will correct me if I get it wrong. Police at royal residences are armed and visible as a security thing. I know that the police at say Horse Guards are armed, they are MoD (Ministry of Defence) police and they are there for security. Most of the other (well trained) armed police have their guns in a locked safe in their cars (ARV - Armed Response Vehicles) and need authorisation from a senior officer before they can deploy them. British police spend more time in training than many others, this applies to firearms officers, to drivers who patrol motorways, and probably other specialities.
