@smithster9617 жыл бұрын
Thanks for this! Fun fact, the reason the Island line uses old Tube trains is because the tunnel at Ryde is so low mainline trains can't fit under it, only Tube trains are small enough to fit.
@PaulJaYmes7 жыл бұрын
More than that, it was built to take full size trains but it was too steep and kept flooding so they raised the floor and ran the tube stock instead

So why REALLY old 1938 tube stock? Why not 1967 tube stock since that's available (unless that's gone to scrap) or when the New Tube for London launches, the 1972 and 1973 tube stock!
@PaulJaYmes7 жыл бұрын
The 67s went to scrap a few years ago now, apart from a couple of cars in museums. Why not use them? I don't know for sure, write to SWT and ask them, but I'd hazard a guess it boils down to cost vs benefit. They'd have to buy the '67s from LU at the scrap value, pay for all the required mods/repairs and ship them to the IoW. And for what benefit? Trade one life expired set of trains for another, it probably isn't going to make much odds on the high maintenance cost, and the 67s are less of a curiosity for tourists.
@deanclayton67027 жыл бұрын
67 stock would be more complex to modify, as it had ATO.

Did you know that when the passing loop at Brading was taken out, leaving the disused platform on the far side and the single-line track, the lifted track was re-used on the Steam Railway's extension from Havenstreet to Smallbrook Junction? It enabled the two railways to come together, but this accounts for the lop-sided timetable on the Ryde-Shanklin service 20mins, then 40mins each hour.

Tube trains on the Isle of Wight is a bit like when they used to rescue pit ponies and retire them to a farm.
@johnmurrell31755 жыл бұрын
The problem is that the tunnel is quite small and 'mainline' gauge stock will not fit. They don't seem to have the cash for a new build and all the more modern LU Tube Trains that have been scrapped ( 83TS, 67TS, 72TS etc) all have aluminium bodies. Aluminium and sea water on the pier do not go well together - you might be able to watch the body disove before your eyes !

Continuity is so much better on these than anything TV would come up with. Portillo would be on the platform as the Ivatt comes in, and then the drone shot would be the train leaving behind a Terrier, and he'd probably arrive at Havenstreet behind an Austerity. (I don't think I've seen this one before, thanks for the reminder by the way Geoff.)

I`m enjoying these videos guy`s you both are doing very well :) , the answer to the moquette on the Isle of Wright 1938 Stock train it is the old Metropolitan Line A60/62 Stock Diamond Moquette before the Triangle Blue and Purple Moquette, until it retired in 2012. I can`t wait to see York station on here, as York is one of my favourite places in the country and I hope you both have time to visit Bettys of Harrogate Tearooms in St Helens Square in York, I am looking forward to watching that. :) and Hope you have time to see the National Railway Museum and the world famous Mallard Stream train. :) best wishes Guy`s.

The class 483's on the islands are in essence 1938 tube stock but with modifications like the removal of the shoe gear for the 630V four rail negative return from the centre rail from LU to the 750V third rail, as well as being two car units as opposed to four car units

Re:the moquette which as already pointed out was surplus material from the Metropolitan Line "A" Stock refurbishment (although not the design in the "A" Stock when withdrawn, it was changed again). The previous batch of trains on the island (the 485 or Standard Stovk used from electrification until 1989) was given surplus LUL moquette used on original District Line "D" Stock, the yellow, orange and black design, also used on the M, T and L Class buses in London. A red-tinged version of this is now currently in used on the Emirates Airline cable cars.

I remember Haven Street well from 1978 to 1982 when I lived in Ryde. Used to want to go and see the Tube Stock at Ryde St Johns which was our nearest station living in Node Close. Was stopped from doing so by my parents as the surrounding area was not as desirable as where we lived back then and they feared for my safety aged five. They took me to Haven Street when there were events on instead but I can't recall Smallbrook Junction: The line out of Haven Street appeared to finish somewhere outside of Newport IoW requiring the train to reverse back to where it had come from.
