Welcome Gardeners! I don’t know what I would call a day like this… a hunt? Expedition? Quest? Let’s go with quest. I am on a QUEST to find the Matilija Poppy. A California Native that has the beauty of the papery thin Iceland Poppy, but the braun of the common California Poppy! It is a plant that I have wanted in my garden forever, but never had enough space. Now that I do, it’s time that I find one. No matter the effort! 💪🏼 Enjoy!

Due to your new location, you might want to consider keeping the bird seed in a metal container. (Like galvanized garbage can .) Those plastic ones barely slow down rodents. Very annoying to have them chew a hole in the container, make a big mess, and contaminate the feed.

In my younger gardening years I once drove 4 hours on a plant quest to feed my obsession to acquire a Himalayan Blue Poppy and to tour a very special garden near Seattle called Heronswood. Life happens, and I have left my old garden behind many decades ago, but I will always have those memories of the plant and that very special garden. The secret to happiness in life is to have someone to love, something to do and something to look forward to. I think you have found that for yourself! Looking forward to seeing how your new garden evolves.

I garden in zone 8b. I cut off the bottom of their containers, 1" from the bottom and planted them where I wanted them and didn't remove the upper part of the container until the next spring when it started to come back. That way, I didn't disturb any roots and once it started to come back it was a sign they took!! I removed the containers by sliding them up from around the poppy before the foliage made it too difficult. I had bought 4 plants two years ago, gave 2 away, planted 2 and both made it!! Good luck 😃 I feel like mine are contained so, they haven't spread super crazy but hey're a beautifully invasive plant. I had planted one 5 years ago, my neighbour saw it and mowed over it! He got scared!! Haha he was lucky I love my neighbours 😮

So glad you got your poppy! Regarding the bird feeders, seems like a good temporary solution, but maybe think about putting a substantial arbor planted with something pretty climbing on it. It would look like an entrance into the garden and make sense. You could then put lights on it for nighttime visibility.

The fun we have while growing our gardens is sometimes the best part. I saved for months in order to get a few Aquapots. Left work early and drove almost 2 hours (they are hard to find in my area) to buy 3 of them. Just like you, I strapped all of them in with seat belts and drove home. 2 years later and I’m so grateful I did. They are the best features in my front garden bed. Even my husband likes them.

Hey Janey, I know you got your Matilija Poppy plants, but there are also several native plant nurseries in the Bay Area that are good options. I think both The Watershed Nursery and East Bay Wilds have them available at the moment. They are also just generally good sources for native plants that are uncommon in the plant trade. As are plant sale events like the UC Davis Arboretum and Sac Valley CNPS events each spring and fall.

I can’t believe I live in Santa Rosa and I’ve never been to van Wydens in Napa until now! As a Master Gardener of over 40 years how did I miss that place? !!! FUNNY STORY: not long ago I went to a master gardener presentation. I told the Young 20 something girl that I too, had been a master gardener way back in the first class offered in Sonoma county. She turned to me and said “oh wow we just had a meeting. We were all wondering if anybody from the real original class was still alive!!! I didn’t think 72 was that old… till now😂😂😂

Funny poppy story.. When I was little I lived in Cordelia and our backyard backed up to the greenbelt of American canyon / Fairfield mountains. It was full of poppies and I loved them so much. My parents were going thru a divorce and I thought it would be nice to make my dad smile with a pretty bouquet 💐 I went out there without knowing it was illegal to pick the state flower ( I was 9) 😂 and picked about 100 of them and stuffed them in a mason jar.. I was headed back to the house on my merry way when a ranger stopped me and totally chewed me out. , I was in tears.., I remember asking him, why are you so grumpy they will grow back then I ran home.. 😂😂😂 I absolutely love your adventures and so happy for AAA 😅🪴

The bird feeders are a nice idea, but should all be placed at least 6 ft off the ground to avoid attacks from any predators. Having them that low to the ground will attract squirrels and chipmunks who will just end up destroying the feeders. Birds also prefer to feed under or near trees or large shrubs so they can quickly take cover if necessary. A few things to consider if you want to attract birds and give them a safe place to feed 🙂

Janey, I can top your crazy plant lady story! I drove 500 miles over three days from the Seattle area to Andrews Seed in Ontario, Oregon to pick up two Taylor junipers that Laura at Garden answer had talked about. The two fir trees flanking my driveway had become too big and unhappy because of climate change so I took them out and determined that Taylor junipers were the perfect narrow evergreen to flank my driveway. I could not find a nursery in the Seattle area that had them or would order them for me so I contacted Andrews Seed as a last resort. Monica and crew had several in stock and put two on hold for me until I could make arrangements to pick them up. It was a bit of adventure to get them but they are thriving and look great already. A heart wants what a heart wants! I get you!

My husband cuts out the bottom of the container and plants the whole thing in the ground so as not to disturb the root ball. Make sure they have good drainage. We cut them WAY back when done blooming and they come back nice and big and bushy. They make awesome big bouquets. I can't get enough of them. Enjoy

Romneya = fried egg flower, grow along the 280 in Palo Alto ...survive with no water, only winter rains. Glorious seeing romneya growing in the divider on the 280 freeway....the roots are sensitive to transplant shock. Not all will survive. Plant in the cooler weather of fall for best luck, also try using growbags and place those directly on, partially buried, or make a mound so the water runs away from the rootball. They take several years to mature.

I would consider planting these in area where the plants are more hemmed in. There appears to be a tree on the other side of the fence, suggesting that the area may be irrigated - the plants could therefore head that direction. I am all about plants, but I am very particular about what I grow and think very carefully about management/maintenance. I doubt I am alone in that...

Something I learned a long time ago, bake your bird seed in a 200 degree oven for an hour. That way the seed won't germinate. The wind, the birds and just dropping seed can give you many unwanted weeds if the unbaked seeds hit the ground. My feeder was close to our lawn and my oh my, my spouse was not happy with what starting growing in his lawn due to bird seed.

Car problems are so stressful! One time that I had a flat tire, and I was so sick of waiting for help that I learned to change the tire by myself. We also drive for plants. It is a long winter here in Wisconsin, and when April comes, we drive throughout the state and into Illinois gathering our plants. It is usually too cold to plant, so we have to protect them until we can plant. I also grow about 1000 seedlings myself, so it becomes quite a plant stash by the time it's warm enough to plant. I look forward to your videos!

Oh my what a story to tell about this poppy! I can just imagine how beautiful it will be! Now you need to get home and relax. I would drive that far for a plant like this. A word of advice, feeding birds is wonderful but the seed will attract every kind of rodent, mice, rats which may invade your house. I just paid a pest control person to take care of mice that invaded my attic and he took one look at my feeder and told me to take them down which I did. Just keep an eye on it. You do have a kitten so perhaps it will catch or deter the mice from entering your home.

I had the same situation with my car's battery about 3 weeks ago. I went to start the car, and the crazy message popped up, clicking noises, etc. AAA came to my house and installed a new battery. Yay! You are not a crazy plant lady. You were a gardener on a mission.

It sounds like you had a little adventure 😂. I am going to look for that plant and if I can grow it here, it looks so pretty when in bloom.

Road trip and Napa? I would do that for any reason in a blink of an eye, beautiful area. Then grab some wine while I’m at it 😊 Car trouble and all the waiting however? Yeah takes the fun out of anything. You were so patient with AAA. Not loving the placement of the bird feeders and hoping it’s a temporary solution. Wishing you the best of luck with your new plants. 🥰

I would have put a ( small ) white picket fence on the corner in an L shape so you have a better visual barrier and I would have repeated it in the opposite corner in front of the middle section. Just me though . I do like the idea of the bird feeders though. 🌺💚🙃

I saw that poppy growing wild on a hiking trail back in May in south San Diego. It was taller than I was. I didn't know what it was but sent a picture to my sister and she ID'd.

I saw that plant in monterey Beach and my mom and I fell in love with it. If your ever in salinas or carmel let me go plant shopping with you. 😂

Great Poppy drama 😅, another suggestion for drivers backing into the large rocks by the septic area - perhaps solar lights for late evenings.
