Welcome Gardeners! Come spend the day with me at the new property. Lots of cleaning and fixing still happening, but I can feel that things are starting to slow down. Just in time too because I am suffering from a major case of decision fatigue. Which is so not like me!! 🤔 Enjoy!

I love these videos about getting the new house and garden ready 😊 What about instead of flanking the office door with those 2 identical pots just put one really big pot on the wider side so it looks intentional. Plus the sign above it. And you could still have a smaller pot on the other side. If they’re not identical, it’s a distraction for the eye and you wouldn’t compare the two sides visually (I hope you know what I mean)I think the awning going not right above the door would look weird 🙊 But it’s your house, you do you 😊

Best to take your time with major decisions, it’s a lot to do so don’t rush it. I believe the door is off centred because of the sink and cabinets on the inside. If it was centred then enough space wouldn’t be on the right. You will appreciate the extra space to the right if you convert the sink area to a washroom later. I believe the awning will bring more attention to the off centred door. Embrace it and don’t over engineer the space trying to hide it

Janey, I had two ideas that might save you money on the office exterior: how about a trellis on the right side with a climber? It would ce cheaper than an awning. Then you could buy a smaller sign for the left side. Idea #2: could you put a greenhouse on the slab next to the office? It’s already got a foundation and if you get a size that is in proportion to the office, it might look really nice. It’s fun to dream with you about this property!

I think i remember her saying she doesn't want the greenhouse on that side of the office because it would be too many buildings all together. The trellis would be so pretty!

I started to leave same comment, then I saw yours....I thought a small trellis to the right with climber up and over top of door would be so pretty and keeping with the garden "theme" and yes, much cheaper. If so, I might skip the pots and just put the climber in the ground next to the door (if that's possible). I think she stated that plans for the concrete pad were to place potting bench or something like that? Can't remember. But yes, greenhouse there would be great and potting benches/potting tools could live in the workshop building.

I have a suggestion for your office, I would make the trim around your door white like the rest of your building. It won't draw attention to the door being off center, and I really like your idea of an awning above your door but I would put it in the middle just above the door. I would get some lattice work to place on the front edge of the wider side, just wide enough to even out the sides, and put your beautiful pink climber rose (I think it was Eden) on the lattice work. The pink would look beautiful with your pretty green door, Or you could place your sign on the wider side next to the door and that would make it look even. I hope you don't mind suggestions.

Janey, no worries about the Starlink. My daughter lives in the most northwestern part of Montana, three miles up a mountain, surrounded by trees, and her Starlink has never failed; even with heavy snow. Just so grateful that someone had the fore thought to think about all the rurally-located people who don't have access to the monopoly-ed cable/internet companies. Thanks for the birds-eye view of the area. I love the rural, open, quietness of it all, with no other houses butted up to you, where you can see what they're watching on TV. Love all the progress you guys are making on the house and gardens. P.S. I agree...maybe a black bench on the longer wall, with a sign above it, and a pot on the shorter wall; then that way if you put a longer awning it could also cover the overhang where the bench is, so it'll look more intentional.

Re the arbor - I’d center it over the door. Once you get that, your sign, pots planted, and maybe carriage lights, the eye goes to those things. Right now the eye sees the door being off because there’s nothing to distract. Once the eye is distracted with the other things, the off-centered door won’t be noticed. I learned this from a designer I worked for and it’s true. 😊

I have two ideas for the septic zone. First one some kind of sculpture, and second one a couple trellis with climbing plats or a cute picket fence with flowers. @@smiley2477 Thank you 😊 I’m a designer who’s new to gardening. And to fix that off center door of the office, my trick is to work with it rather than against it. A light and airy espalier can be designed in a non symmetrical way to creat balance. An awning would put the balance off further. For the sign, I think it’s much simplistic and chic to hang it on the bottom section of the door. I’m so tempted to draw on paper this complete picture in my head 🤣

Do you see me raising my hand? That is me acknowledging that I was freaking out about you walking around on the roof IN SANDALS! Yikes! I was relieved when you and Jason came down, lol. You know, I did not notice that the door was offset until you pointed it out. IMHO, I agree with some of the comments below about using the wider side for a larger pot and/or bench, and skipping the awning which would most likely highlight the asymmetry. Jason's "Why not?" response about wanting to use your kitchen mop on the solar panels made me laugh. That is exactly the kind of conversation my husband and I would have had about it, haha! I also love that you two notice the little (literally) things such as the Monarch, hummingbird, and ladybug. You both have kind hearts. Whatever you put near the septic tank will clearly need to be tall so that drivers cannot miss it. That is a tricky spot where the septic tank cover is. I can only think of a faux wishing well with flowers planted in it and tall grasses around it, an archway with grasses, a birdbath area, or a tall water fountain.🥰

On the circular drive, speaking as an older woman with adult children and even adult grandchildren, I know it may not feel like it, but you will have FOUR drivers at your house before you know it. They will have friends with cars and trucks. You'll host parties and events there, and you'll have tradespeople with trucks showing up to work and to pump out the septic system periodically. That driveway might come in handy. If not, you can always take it out later--no rush. For now, it gives you something other gardeners must work much harder to achieve, which is the ability to have multiple separate garden 'rooms' with different moods and purposes, and different sorts of plantings altogether. You have so many options and destination zones! Enjoy it for now.

Big planters with an arbor and lights for septic area. Didn’t even notice the shed door being off until you said something. Plant something on a trellis!

You could put a series of tall and smaller pots in front of the septic area. I have used a wrought iron garden cart with pots surrounding it to disguise an area in my yard.

Seeing how many trucks were there for fantasy football, I think your driveway is perfect. At some point you may have events or venues and appreciate the parking. I think Michael suggested crushed granite down the line, that wouldn’t be as stark as the pavement.

It isfun seeing all you are doing. For that odd bump out in the front... Could you buy 4 matching tall pots, like people put at front doors, and plant tall grasses or evergreens in them so they could be seen, and look intentional? It was strangely satisfying to watch the panels get mopped clean. 😊 I feel like the awning would just draw more attention to the off center, but a trellis or long sign is a good idea to even it out.

Maybe a Lamp Post would help keep cars off your septic access?

Hi Janey, I rarely leave comments because I watch KZbin on my TV. I was thinking about your septic tank cover and I thought perhaps you can put a strong Steel Metal sheet over your current cover for extra strength and security. And use light weight flower pots and make a beautiful grouping of arrangements that looks purposeful which will be easily seen and removable! You can use mulch around the floral arrangement, you definitely know how to make things look BEAUTIFUL! Thanks for sharing your new home with us, looking forward to see all your upcoming projects! 💞🤗🌺

you could temporarily use one of the metal troughs filled with something pretty on the spot near the septic, or more white pots like the ones in the zig zag :). Loving your videos....

I wait for all your videos and always get eager to see what you have planned next for your house n garden. I think the off-center door of your office might be because they had stove fitted there earlier and it woulnd have fit if they had centered the door.

IDEA FOR CORNER: What about wood posts like the ones you just installed and add solar lights on top of them.

The Mop The Mop. . . LOL. . . It reminds me how I tried talking my husband out of using my house mop to mop the garage floor. 😱😱 I laughed watching you try to talk him out of using The Mop to wash the solar panels. . . I lost as well and just bought a new mop replacement and hid it🤣🤣🤣🤣

Why don’t you put black ranch style right angle fence posts/ sections at the two front corners as markers? 😊 I can’t wait for Andrew to paint the porches and decks black. What did you think about my idea to frame out your windows/ doors and paint black? Also, love 💕 the sky view of your back yard tree, which really needs to be limbed up and thinned out. 😊

The awning might not be a great idea because it might make it worse, someone suggested a trellis and I think that’s a better idea or espalier

Another idea for the off centered door is to play up the asymmetry with asymmetric plantings; smaller on the left and larger, maybe taller, and maybe even in a larger pot on the right. It will balance things out well, and you won't have the potential dilemma of two same plants growing unevenly.

Suggestion regarding the door to the office... I would give up trying to make it look centered. I’d embrace the asymmetry, maybe do a collection of pots on the larger side with the sign, and then put a potted tree or topiary on the smaller side. So it wouldn’t be symmetrical but it could be balanced. I’d skip the awning.

You should put a trellis over the septic access then you could grow something beautiful over the trellis. That way everyone would be able to see the trellis and not run over your access. Plus it could be a beautiful pathway to your yard!

An exterior wall light/sconce added to the right side of your office door in addition to a DPWR logo sign would really help visually center the door on the front of your office entrance.

I'm wondering if you could play up the offset door by having two different sized pots, same design and then use a larger plant on one size and then a smaller one in the other one. Love the colour you chose.

Hi Janey I love all your progress videos. I too had an off center situation. I planted a bush on the bigger side. Plant something lovely on that corner/ side it will disguise it. The more you off set everything takes away from your focal which is your door with the awning. Center everything to this and the rest will go away. Can’t wait to see what you do. It will be beautiful as you are! 😊
