Israel-Hamas conflict should not be allowed to compromise Singapore peace and harmony: Pritam Singh

Singaporeans should be aware that the Israel-Hamas confrontation and broader conflict could test its multi-racial and multi-religious society, but it should not be allowed to compromise the country's peace and harmony, said Leader of the Opposition Pritam Singh in parliament on Monday (Nov 6).
He outlined the Workers' Party's (WP) response to the Israel-Hamas war, stating that it supports the Geneva Conventions and international humanitarian law.
"We support them because our survival depends on them. Singapore is a small state that relies on international law. And small states need international law and its protections," he said.
He said the WP backs the call for a two-state solution for Israelis and Palestinians to live in peace and security.

The gentleman needs to be reminded that in 1948 the US had an embargo in place against Israel. Needless to say there was no aid. In fact, no aid to Israel exists, and has never existed with small exceptions I.e. $2 billion in 1973 during the Arab war of aggression in that year. The current funding received by Israel was neither requested nor required. The US bribed Israel in 1979 with the provision of military aid to both Israel and Egypt (apportioned in a ratio of 3/2 in favor of Israel) in exchange for Israel in return for surrendering the Sinai Peninsular to Egypt, a country that launched 3 wars against Israel. The Sinai Peninsular was a major buffer for Israel which also provided Israel with oil and natural gas, resources that alone covered the cost of all US aid. I propose that Israel return all aid to the US in exchange for the Sinai Peninsular plus 43 years of revenue lost from its resources.

So do we measure severity (and need to speak up) by proportion of deaths in Hamas vs Israel? More Germans than Britons died during the world war - were the Germans the victims or aggressor? Do Hamas enjoy immunity from attacks because they hide amongst their civilians? Is there a need to differentiate between deliberate barbaric killing of innocent by terrorists vs deaths due to war? The former deliberately goes after the innocent, and asks its citizens to stay, whilst the latter requests its enemy’s citizens to evacuate but the enemy tells its citizens not to. What’s in the Hamas mission vs Israeli mission? One is to obliterate Jews. Does removing aid to Jews solve this ongoing problem when the mission of its neighbour is to extinguish their race? The no. of innocent deaths is v unfortunate but we cannot look at numbers alone and make conclusions.

They were so blatant that they even posted videos for public viewing whereas Israel has to abide by international conventions and law. This is blatant discrimination. Hama's agenda is clear as day; it is to decimate the Jews and extinguish the Jewish state. If Israel lays down their arms, it is the end of Israel. That has always been the one and only goal of Hama. It will be an opportune time for Hamas and its ilks to launch more aggressive attacks again (as has happened in the past). It is interesting to note that none of the Middle Eastern countries (even the rich Saudi Arabia) will take the Gaza refugees but expect Israel to do so. One must always remember being merciful to the guilty is cruelty to the innocents.

BTW, USA recognise China and not Taiwan but that doesn’t stop them from supporting Taiwan in terms of financial, especially military and other ways. I would suggest you read up more about the history of the Middle East from antiquity, perhaps from the Roman Empire onwards.

if seriously you are looking at 'humanitarian' grounds, then you ought to ask yourself how can Hamas carry out such heinous attacks on innocent civilians. Behead babies making the parent watch. Raped girls and women. Parade their naked bodies - is this a humane act perpetrated by Hamas? We shouldn't be looking from the angle of supporting and siding the culprits on the basis of the same faith. This is wrong. As you said, it should be in the context of humanitarian, moral and ethics. Surely, any faith teaches love, kindness and understanding. Not murder.

There is nothing Mr Pritam Singh said in Parliament in Singapore can make any difference in Israelis-Hamas conflict.In the past there were numerous mitigation for peace for both sides but Palestinian rejected all of them. Basically their “Free Palestinian from river to the sea” means to get rid and destroy Israel state. Is this fair to the Israelis? After the PLO agreed to peace, the Palestinian voted in Hamas to govern Gaza. The money from the UN for development in Gaza were used to buy weapon and build tunnels to attack Israel instead of improving the living conditions in Gaza. Even the water and electricity were supplied by Israel. On 7th Oct, when Hamas carried out unprovoked attack on Israel, not even one Israelis soldier is in Gaza. How is the Israelis oppressing or occupying Palestinian’s land? When Hamas attacked and took hostages, their aim is to provoke and wanted the Israelis to respond. What is their aim? Did they know that the Palestinian will suffer when Israelis retaliate? Of course they do. So is there a solution to this conflict? Of course no. There is no political point to score for Mr Singh and WP. When Pritam called for a cease fire, he is in fact encouraging the conflict to prolong because this is exactly what the Palestinian wanted, for international communities to condemn Israel and thinking that they gained the support of other states. When Pritam brought up this issue in Parliament did he consider how Singaporean of different religions / races would react?
