More than 24 years later, those who knew Israel Kamakawiwo’ole best reminiscence about an award’s show performance that left the crowd in tears. Specifically during "Kaleohano".
The year was 1996 and IZ had gone solo, but the stage was set for an unforgettable, emotional reunion in Hawaiian music history. The crowd rose to their feet - standing for the entire song - and did indeed shed some tears at the beautiful performance.
“It’s a memory you never never forget,” said Moon Kauakahi, a member of the Makaha Sons of Niihau. “Everybody still talks about that. I mean everyone.”

We can really be petty and immature by a couple of comments...🙄 this man is saying goodbye to us here. But he didn't let his issues with food and depression stop him from sharing his gift with the world. He had courage "to be" and he didn't hide away from the world or it's judgements. His faults just weren't hidden. God loves us inspite of the package we come in disability , addictions , disorders or not he meets us in our present sinful condition because we can't do anything to free ourselves from sin which is why we need Him. At least IZ understood he needed the Lord. He's free and not bound by the physical issues or criticism of others anymore.

I worked in Waikiki in the mid 80's, when IZ would walk through the International Market Place on his way to work at the Hafbrau, a German restaurant under Farrells Ice Cream shop. Each time I saw him walk by I greeted him with a big smile, thinking how wonderful to have the real thing come to Waikiki, and thought, do these people around here realize what an honor it is to be in his presence. One day when I wasn't busy he stopped to talk (joke and laugh) with me and we became friends. We recognized each other as having Jesus in our hearts. One day on my break I went to see him at his work place. We chatted with the bar keep and then it was time for IZ to start his 1st set. As soon as he began to sing my jaw dropped! OH MY GOD! I looked at the bar keep and he said YEAH! The Magnificent Beautiful Voice of a God! IZ brought a lot of JOY to the people who had the pleasure of hearing him sing. That voice opened the hearts of the tourists and That is very healing. If only I could hear him sing one more time, like when he was in his prime. Not long after that he became famous. Well, he was already famous in Las Vegas. Lots of Hawaiians live there. Then his fame grew here in Hawaii and flourished around the country and parts of the world. He was a very pricipled person and a good influence for the people in his life.

The song is talks about Uncle Piggy and his beloved home of Keaukaha, but I think the underlying message of this song, especially for this performance, was that we need to support each other in our communities, be humble and be kind to each other, and just thrive as Hawaiians, to be like Uncle Piggy. Uncle Piggy Kaleohano is a local legend from Keaukaha on Big Island who fully embodied the spirit of aloha, he contributed so much to his community and inspired so many artists with his role in music both as a singer for Da Blahlas of Keaukaha and a sound engineer.

@@rammpantera Don't know the answer to that from a personal standpoint, but...singing is based on the breathing and breath control that vibrates your vocal cords. My little brother is on oxygen because he does not have enough to breath well on his own. I cannot imagine how Iz continued to get the vocal quality he did while operating at a reduced rate. I listen to the pauses he and others take while talking and am astounded that he could keep going the way he did. @@pomaimoikeha829 It was a big favorite of mine some time ago when I made this account. I still like it but I'm not the fan I once was. Nice to speak with you by the way. I'm glad you didn't take my comment too personally. I meant it with sincere, positive vibes.

Nov 2019 - whenever I run across Iz, I have to stop and listen in awe & reverence. His uke and voice echos across the airwaves and canyons of time, to softly touch my heart & soul. I smile while my eyes glisten and happily leak. I look forward to meeting him in heaven. I'm so glad God shared him with us, even though the time was short, it was powerful, and meaningful.
