In November 1993, “Facing Future” was released.
It turned Israel Kamakawiwo’ole from a favorite Hawaii musician to an artist on the world stage.
A quarter century later - and 21 years after his untimely death at the age of 38 - IZ’s popularity has only grown.
To mark 25 years since the release of “Facing Future,” the most successful Hawaii album of all time, HNN compiled a special series and digital documentary that looked at IZ’s life and his legacy.

Izzy was proof that sometimes heaven loans us an angel to remind us of how precious and special life is. This world was made brighter for Izzy being part of it. Mortal life ends but the spirit is eternal. Nothing will ever dim the light that is his spirit.

I remember when I was little and I would hear Judy Garland sing, “somewhere over the rainbow,” it always made me sad and lonely. But when I heard Israel sing it, it was the first time I felt beauty, peace and love. I am so thankful to hear such a beautiful voice come from such a beautiful man. It truly is his song.

Can't explain how crazy it is for me to be part Hawaiin & grow up public school Hawaii, go to LA for work experience, marry a Mexican wife, and be driving deep in Mexico while my Mexican wife randomly plays Over the Rainbow by Iz and my Mexican wife not truly knowing the history/importance of this song & singing it in her Mexican accent while my little son is happy in the backseat calm & peaceful. Brahdah Iz was one of a kind & still creating magical moments until this day; what a legend.

The great songwriting team of Yip Harborg (lyricist) & Harold Arlen, who took the melody from an old Yiddish song, slowed it down &, voila,-saved the movie from obscurity in 1939, composed this song for Judy Garland to sing in The Wizard of Oz. It was her signature song & it belonged totally to her until Iz's version came out. In my opinion both versions are magnificent and only in the US is it a competition. Yip was later blacklisted for his political ideas. He was a socialist and stood up for the working man & woman.

I have heard the opening notes of the medley, 'Somewhere over the Rainbow' so often (frequently accompanying documetaries on the South Sea Islands) but had no idea who had this soft, angelic, voice. Then, a few nights ago, a BBC Radio 4 Extra programme introduced me to Israel Kamakawiwo'ole, and his medley of songs. He may have died some years ago; but I hope his soul is at rest. This is such a beautiful documentary, about a wonderful man. Thank you for posting it.

As amazing as "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" is, I belueve that his rendition of "Kaleohano" is more impactful. His last live performance of the song was probably the most memorable performance in all of Hawaii's history. That night the Makaha Sons of Ni'ihau were reunited on stage for the last time and it wasn't even planned.

You do not have to hope. It can be for sure. You know he was a Christian? He lives forever with Jesus in Paradise! You can too. You have only to go to Jesus and accept him as God's son and our Savior who died so that WE might live forever in Paradise with Him. Then go, learn more about Him and spread His Good Word so that others may live forever too!

I first heard Iz at the end of the Movie Finding Forester in 2000. I was deeply, completely, instantly connected, I waited to the very end credits to see who it was, then went out and found every single thing he ever recorded. I have listed to him so much that even though I am not remotely Hawaiian I can sing along with almost every song in Hawaiian (well sort of :>) He is, and always will be the best musician I have ever heard of, for his music, his message, and his spirit. I still cry for him as if he was my own brother, I can't explain it because I have never felt this way about anyone.

This beautiful man among men was blessed in a way that is uncommon to most any other person. One thing that stands out, is that he, like many other very powerful people had a circumstance of some type that caused them to suffer. Their greatness was magnified beyond their seemingly adverse situation. When I first listened to Israel sing, something inside of me said there was something more powerful behind that voice that I heard, and I believe that to this day!

This documentary was lovely. I will never forget the time when Iz came to the SF Bay Area. It was a couple of years before he passed and he brought a bunch of Hawaiian kids with him. There was no publicity but just hearing that he was going to be at the Marin Civic Center on a Sunday afternoon, brought out hundreds of people and the lines wrapped the building a couple of times. I remember the big beach ball being passed around the audience & people signing it and passing it on. The kids Iz brought were terribly confused by the venue's food stand. They thought the hostess Twinkies were spam musubi and couldn't find anything to eat. We felt so honored to be able to see him. We had seen him many times on Big Island & O'ahu, but this was a gift to the diaspora. & we knew it.

In 2004, I went on vacation to Oahu, or O'ahu. My son was in the Marines and stationed in Kaneoha. He befriended many of the indigenous people. The Hawaiian people call main-landers haole (not sure of the spelling). Before I went, I studied their history, language, and customs. When I got there I learned that the native Hawaiians don't care much about people from the states because vacationers are basically rude and don't treat them with the respect that should be given to people that live in a place that is visited by people from other places or countries. I was invited to go to North Shore and to places vacationers are told not to go to by the Americans that work in the airport and car rental places. I got to meet people who were close to Iz and knew his life well. I showed them great respect, and in return, I was welcomed in a way that I have never felt welcomed before. They told me stories about Iz, his family, their heritage, and so many other things. I would love to say more, but I will just end by saying that I have never met such a joyful, loving, peaceful and beautiful people in all of my life. Their love and kindness was simply overwhelming. And being a man, I got to do the local custom of rubbing noses with some of the women. My wife rubbed noses with some of the men who took quit a liking to her. The way I understood it, that custom is reserved for special people that are loved. If any of you ever go to Hawaii, you will gain something special if you show the Hawaiians the respect that they deserve. Aloha
