A couple things: Mariah had 19 #1 hits, Whitney had 11, and Celine had 6. Whitney had 7 consecutive #1 hits. Still the record. Mariah had her first five singles reach #1 ('90-'91). Still the record. Mariah also had another run of five consecutive #1 singles ('95-'98). One Sweet Day was #1 for 16 weeks. I Will Always Love You & We Belong Together were #1 for 14 weeks. The Star Spangled Banner re-entered the chart due to 9/11. Yes, the video shows that compared to Whitney and Celine, Mariah was more adept at evolving throughout the 90's and 00's. She changed her production and vocals to stay current without losing her overall trademark sound. The Adult Contemporary / MOR style that dominated the late 80s and early 90s gave way to R&B in the mid 90s & Hip Hop in the late 90s. Mariah knew that was coming as early as Dreamlover in '93 despite resistance from Columbia execs. Whitney and Celine had less of a direct hand in the crafting of their material and thus didn't evolve as quickly with the times. After the late 90s, neither of the other two divas enjoyed top 5 success on the singles chart while Mariah experienced a resurgence in the mid '00s. A New Day Has Come (2002) is Celine's last great album and her most consistent. Virtually no filler. Definitely worth listening to.

Nice reaction. We'll Mariah didn't make music that suited the time period she paved the way from 1995s Fantasy feat.ODB and Honey 1997 for music that dominated the 2000s. The reason for her success post her singing just Alt Ballads is not because she followed trends but because she was smart enough to create them. That's just the benefit of her writing and producing music tho she gets to steer the direction of her sound. When Whitney and Celine can only steer their direction to a certain degree because they can control their vocals and not actual sound of all of their music. Belted music just got more conceptually boring. The vocals were given and they don't need to be done everytime it would get boring for the artist too.

Belting becomes boring after a while, and it's extremely taxing on a singer's voice. I've been a fan of Mariah her entire career and I appreciate her music from lyrics, to productions, to singing, etc. Just because you like belting it doesn't mean upbeat and softer voice songs are bad. I mean, c'mon.!!! Music is a lot more than just belting songs. If you were a singer, I'm sure you would get sick and tired of it as well.
@itschensplace4 ай бұрын
That's absolutely ridiculous. Belting is what opera singers do and it's the most healthy form of singing there is. Just because mariah had nodules and pushed her voice with lots of problematic techniques doesn't mean that the one healthy aspect of her singing was bad. Mariah's whisper singing is the most damaging thing a singer can do - letting air out through the vocal folds plus she growled a lot which is even worse for the vocal folds. Only thing I agree with is that singing is dynamic not only belting, there's also head voice and soft mix but no, it never gets boring.
@hectorbello1614 ай бұрын
@@itschensplace Well, I said "taxing" as in demanding, not "damaging". Mariah's catalog is extremely challenging and she's not classically trained. Anyway, you and I have very different appreciation of music. You enjoy belting and ballads. I do to some extent but after the third song, I feel like throwing a shoe at the speakers. To each their own. Goodbye.

Its interesting like you say that some dont peak and some huge songs arnt number one for as long as you think. Like Celine Dions my heart will go on. Would probably have been number one for a whole lot longer but they pulled the single from sale to drive album sales instead. And because that song was so massive they didnt even release any other songs from that album in the US. Only to air play.
@cttwii2 жыл бұрын
Also thats the way it is is one of the best Celine songs 👌 and also should have probably been number one but the commercial single was released months after the song went to radio and so the fact that its that high is amazing really seen as everyone would already have that song after buying the album at this point. Sometimes record companies sacrifice singles for album sales which Sony did with Celine a lot.

Let's also remember Whitney's albums sold so massively that she didn't have to put a album out every ear, her releases were 2 to 8 years apart. Whitney is from a time when it was not about the fast bucks it's was about the music and the album and Whitney, MJ, Prince and other rock or white pop stars of that time knew to give a break between ur albums to not oversaturate the market with you, that why Arista turned down MJ duet request with Whitney, she was already being played 2 to 3 times an hour on all formats. This is why she don't have as many singles she had fewer albums and still out sold all of her peers per album to sale. So Mariah will be seen most on here as she put out album after album trying to pass Whitney in sales. Whitney has about 10 albums vs Mariah and Madonna who have 15 or mor each. The numbers don't lie! Whitney was Queen on so many levels. But I will give Mariah some credit for being able to use marketing and rappers to keep her career alive.
@superninja64812 жыл бұрын
What a backhanded compliment. Just because Mariah released more albums doesn't mean she was doing this to compete in sales... maybe she just wanted to make more because she loves music. You do not need to bring Mariah down just to bring Whitney up. They are both legends in their own right. And to insinuate that Mariah only used "marketing and rappers to keep her career alive" is grossly dismissive of the real reason why she made such a pivotal change in her music, which is that her true love is for RnB and Hip Hop, not adult contemporary pop. If anything, it might be more accurate to say that the first half of the 90s where her music was heavy in pop ballads was the least representative of her true artistry and was likely spearheaded by her record label because that was the style that was popular at the time. From as early as her Music Box album in 1993 - only 3 years into her career, Mariah's music was already gradually becoming more urban as she gained more creative control over her music - starting with just the remixes of her pop singles to appease her record label's more conservative tastes during the Music Box era, but then transitioning into true RnB with Hip Hop influences starting with Daydream and pretty much all of her subsequent albums, especially Butterfly, Rainbow, Charmbracelet, and The Emancipation of Mimi. Not everyone liked her shift in style. Not everyone likes her RnB/Hip Hop music because they aren't slow power ballads with a trillion sustained high belts and vocal gymnastics, and that's perfectly fine. But to attribute her shift in music to a ploy to remain relevant and as you put it, "to keep her career alive", completely negates her originality and artistic vision for a style of music that despite not being trendy, popular, and marketable at the time, was so groundbreaking that so many artists today emulate the RnB - Hip Hop collaboration that she pioneered in the mid-late 90s and early 2000s. And the gag is.... she did all this during a time when it wasn't the "trend" to deviate from pop ballads in the adult contemporary pop genre, which was capitalized at the time to cater to mainstream white listeners for sales, rather than artistry. If Mariah was so desperate to compete with Whitney in sales, so you claim, then she would have stayed in her adult contemporary pop lane and continued putting out slow pop ballads with a trillion runs and high notes like her peers. But she didn't want to play it safe because that's not the type of music she loves, so she took a risk and chose artistry over sales. Ultimately, Mariah's sales is proof of her popularity, but the true testament to her incredible artistry and originality is the undeniable impact she's had and continues to have on the music industry, setting trends for future pop/RnB artists who follow in her footsteps, not following them.

Or maybe Mariah released too many albums (music) coz she writes her own materials and didn't want to waste them so she decided to just releases them?? Though the real reason is that she had a contract to reach 10 Albums, and the time she started releasing more music is because she wanted to be out of that contract and house (sing sing), she signed her contract at the very young age, we can't blame her, as most people make mistakes at age 18,19 to 20,. So yeah, don't come here and say bull shits stuffs, read and know her history then maybe you can be a lil open minded to think maybe that's or this might be why she did this thing!! She has more talent than the other 2, and thats not me shading the other 2, its me saying they do have talents but Mariah has more talent. U can have your opinion based off likes or love to either of them I must say but facts and numbers dont lie, and I'm not saying selling more means talent, no all I'm saying is when its good then its good but when its good and it came from you personally creatively?? Then that's talent and we should praise that. Mariah the songbird supreme will always be that girl. Others will come to try to hit some notes here and there, and even scream head voices calling them whistles or even do real "weak" whistle notes and call themselves the next Mariah, but well, we all know who the real one is and always will be.

@@ezrakiiza8024 Saying Mariah had more talent is based solely on your opinion of a singer being able to write means they are more talented. From what I’ve seen in person and in videos…Whitney was a better live singer than Mariah. Whitney could change the rhythm and words of a song on the spot. She led more with her emotion in the moment. That is a gift just as Mariah was gifted the pen in songwriting. I enjoyed Whitney as an actress and was not impressed with Mariah’s acting talent so really your comment is pointless.

What do you mean “using rappers” to keep her career alive? Mariah has always been a fan of hip hop since and she showed it as early as 1995. The time she finally got out of control from her controlling husband thats when she eventually became herself and started doing hiphop records. At that time, R&B was also a hit. She is smart enough to reinvent herself. Don’t discredit other artists just because your favorite isnt achieving hits in a certain point of time
