My boss back in the day together with a group of his friends dropped out of school and fled South Africa between the ages of 15 and 16 as they refused to serve their compulsory military conscription in the "defense" force. To this day, I have not met anyone in person more nobler than him. Rest in peace Dearest of men. Young man, you brought tears to my eyes. Stand your ground. @@ravenblack7052 I went to a multiracial private school under the days of Apartheid. One of the stranger things one of the teachers told us was of 2 boys who matriculated and the White student was conscripted into the army and the Black went home to a township. They encountered each other at a political demonstration, with the White student in military riot squad gear, and stopped, greeted, and chatted to each other, in the middle of the protest, and then parted company. _Surreal._ I still remember that incident from about 30 years ago.

He's pretty amazing.. I've been following him since the beginning of the assault on Gaza. He did a lot of media to bring attention to the system inside of Israel - including the indoctrination of youth at school from a young age; the racism within the system and how it dictates whether you're placed safely in intelligence or sent to the front lines; the cost of refusing to serve. He's a brave young man. GenZ's anti war perspective is one of the hopes we have for a better future.

After October 7th I noticed a lot of young leftists in the uk and the us say “Well why aren’t these soldiers just objecting and refusing to fight?”. A lot of these people saying these things would never even dare to do something like that. In Israeli society this is a big deal. Refusing to serve endangers your life, your employment opportunities and important relationships with friends and family. This is a serious choice and should be properly commended. We as outsiders have a woefully limited understanding of the scope of indoctrination Israeli citizens experience I think.

But in the Vietnam era, many young Americans also faced harsh penalties for refusing to serve - although PM Pierre Trudeau opening the Canadian border and canadian citizenship to draft-refusers was really helpful. Many leftist Canadians today (like Naomi Klein) are the children of US draft refusers. I think the problem is that Israelis are a far more conservative and nationalist and racist than even Americans were in the 1960s. People who do not support ethnic cleansing of Palestinians are a tiny minority.

How can a reasonable person doesn’t come to the conclusion of returning Palestine to its righteous owners of Palestinians before there nakba 1948 ? Anything short of that is immoral

Very articulate young man. I wonder about one comment he has said several times. "Systems corrupt people ". But systems are created by people, they don't exist on their own. People are responsible.

It amazes me how this 18 year old has so much understanding and strength to stand up a agonist the IOF. In years to come when this is all over he will remembered as one of the heroes of this episode in history.

I hope no harm / punishment comes to this brave young man after candidly and courageously talking about what’s going on in Israel. I am sure there are a lot more Israelis who think like him but haven’t been able to tell anyone for fear of being shunned by their families and society. Thank you Owen for giving people like him a platform. ❤️
