As I understand it, according to the Rambam, the idea of the Temple with sacrifices, etc was to wean the Jewish people away from the other peoples practicing idol worship, etc. That is the service, etc was for people to focus on Hashem only. I consider myself religious but I find the idea of animal sacrifice to be repugnant, and with many people connected with a new mind set on how to treat animal, I do not feel that red heifers, etc are needed.
