The problem is that we in the West have exported our ideal of the nation state into the Middle East and Africa where their social structures have historically been religious, tribal and nomadic. We have constructed countries with borders based on a model imposed and controlled by outside forces and hence there will always be issues. Why should we imagine that drawing an imaginary line on the earth and forcibly settling people on one side or the other, would work there? It's always struck me as incredibly patronising for Western historians, politicians and commentators to say that we in the West are civilised and that we civilised the world with our free market democratic model: we raped Asia, Africa and the Middle East; deposed their leaders and enslaved their populations. The only thing different in the 21st century is the optics; corporations do the work of governments and impose a leadership which they can control such as Gaddafi in Libya and Saddam in Iraq and whenever these leaders begin to develop a nascent nationalist identity, which goes beyond what the corporate West wants, they are unceremoniously removed. I just hope that our own youth will stop signing up for the armed forces because they are not protecting their homeland but instead forwarding the agenda of the Anglo American kleptocracy which now rules us.
