I've had only one nanny over 11 years. I'm her 1st employer. She came when my 1st born was 4 days old. We had a mutual agreement on boundaries and very clear (written) expectations both ways. Signed a renewable contract. I give her an annual increment as well as an extra half salary as December bonus. We've had our run-ins but our boundaries, expectations and contract keep things in check.

I pray mine stays with me just as much. I don't have kids nor am I married. But since I moved out of my parents house, I got a help. She is a day bug. And so far it has been over 5 years together. The only issue we have had is when I wanted her to adapt the Konmari method of arranging clothes. That was last year. She has now adapted even the color coding. I am so appreciative of her.

One tip I'd add is that when they leave especially if its on bad terms, you can draft a kasmall document and make them sign saying they have received all their dues. Just in case they decide to frustrate you. Or every time you pay them, have them sign. You can also appreciate them by enrolling them into a short course like tailoring or beauty school especially if their schedule isn't crazy. Looking forward to more IssaMotherhood episodes.

Why would the nanny need to sign something to prove they've been paid though? Do Americans not pay their nanny's wages straight into their bank account? Money transfers from your account to theirs as evidenced by both parties' bank statements. I don't get it.
@brendahmurugi6948
@brendahmurugi6948 4 жыл бұрын
@@kerrytaylor1795 if you're talking Americans, most can't afford nannies and if they do, its hourly so you pay them in cash or bank transfer and you have to include that in your tax returns. If a family can afford a full time nanny they have pay slips and shit and are taxed. The system is very different

I love this!!!! Addition to being self sufficient and trusting your gut when it comes to your kids, my tip is to interrupt the routine. Like randomly offer to bathe the kids, ask questions, cook, wash your house randomly. You might learn something that's going on that you don't like.

My mum, being a theatre nurse, had a pretty tight and unpredictable schedule. One morning, my then nanny decides she wants to go home as my mum prepares to go to work. Mum begs her to stay for at least a day ajiorganize because the off was short notice. Mum goes to work, then later gets a hysterical call from her then Indian neighbor," Your maid is dangling the baby on the balcony!" You can imagine the panic mum had. She drops everything, rushes home and releases her immediately. I was left with a neighbor coz she was to be on duty in the operating theatre that afternoon. 😩✌ PS. that was 30 years ago😁 I'm well #maidchronicles

NSSF: S. 19 NSSF Act- duty of the employer to register herself and the employee. Keep records as per 19(7). Penalty for failure to register - 50k S. 20 mandatory contribution. 5% penalty for failure/shortfall pro-rata. Minimum wage: Labour Institutions Act. Depends on location and manner? Per month rates: NRB/KSM/MBS: 13572. Limuru, Ruiru, Mavoko: 12522. Others: 7240. Protected by same legal rights/labour rights as your workplace: 1 day of rest every 7 days. 21 days annual leave. Maternity (I think ) and sick Leave apply. Termination : Notice or salary in lieu. Service pay= 15 days for every full year of service. Termination should be in line with due process: hearing... Etc. To add on to the rewards, get NHIF . This covers them and their kids. She can register as self employed and you pay directly via Mpesa . Knowing her kids are covered is a motivation for her as well. Plus you don't need to give her cash for the small small illnesses. I waited 6 months till I offered her NHIF

I'm so late to the game here but I'm really glad I stumbled upon this. Mid 30s, no kids of my own but I've helped out family members and friends with various home management issues. I was really waiting for that "remember that this person is a human being". This is such a crucial thing to remember as an employer in any environment. Now here's someone who you're trusting with your home, kids... and then people still get petty about things like giving them your wifi password. Haiya! I've seen situations where a domestic worker has saved an emergency situation where they had run out of airtime but were able to make emergency calls via WhatsApp. And right now during Covid, the fact that my help can video call with their family means that they're not in and out of the compound, exposing themselves (and me!) unnecessarily.

This is so informative. I remember as a child, I had a nanny that was really nice but she left and we had a switch of several others before this one nanny came. My siblings and I didn't like her vibe from day 1 and we told mum but she ignored till one day she started insulting my sister and I talked back at her then she went to the kitchen and came back with a knife ready to stab me. I was so traumatized. Having a nanny can be so scary

I really enjoyed this episode. Please can you translate some of the Swahili or non-English words so those of us outside of Kenya can understand? 😌☺️ You both are amazing mothers and your daughters are blessed. One important thing I think that was omitted is medical checks. Every domestic or household staff should do so - let them understand this prior to employment and take them to your own chosen clinic/hospital instead of telling them to return with tests results. Again, as much as it's good to overlook certain 'little' things, it's important to show that you have 'zero tolerance' for some of those things as even these little things can become BIG things. This should be part of setting limits, expectations et al. Another way of empowerment is to encourage a skill - cooking, sewing, art or otherwise, encourage savings (it will shock you how many don't even operate a bank account or depend on money to be paid to a spouse's or relative's account instead), literacy (even if it's basic English and Maths - a lot are unable to read or do simple calculations). Take these as a form of 'individual social responsibility' - ISR like the CSR. And as you said as much as you don't get too attached, be tactical when checking up on their life outside of your home. Again, it's crucial to educate and sensitize them about health especially (esp. at this time of Coronavirus), basic first aid (whom to call in an emergency including alternative people), security (being vigilant about the environment, people and places whether around the home or even their areas) etc. I also think that confirming a guarantor before employment is crucial, preferably not a relative but someone who's willing to vouch for them. Even if an agent brought them, ensure that the agent puts it in paper that a guarantor was checked. Maybe not in Kenya but there are countries where kids have been kidnapped by even staff brought by 'credible' agents. This is also where I agree that lots of pictures of the staff (even with the kids) are important. I also love the part of remembering that they are human. Celebrate or appreciate them on their birthdays or successes. A little goes a long way... All in all, I think if you have a good heart and treat them well, a genuine staff will know this and also treat you the same. In trusting your guts and also paying attention to your kid's reactions (because kids can be angels and have a way of detecting negative vibes) and the reactions from trusted people, if in your heart with all these, you don't feel comfortable or stop feeling comfortable, let go! I look forward to more 'IssaMotherhood or in fact IssaParenthood (with the fathers from their perspective) videos. Cheers

The biggest is how are you treating your nanny. Most people cannot do half the work their nannies do and then you pay them crap... I am sorry, most of the fault lies with the employers of the nanny. Many employers of nannies, cannot be in their own home for a whole weekend without going crazy... None of us here works from at 7.30am to 6.00pm... that is an 11 hour work day.. for what, less than 10k.. I always challenge women to do the work your nanny does for 1 week, then truly see if you are a good boss.

Okay, finally watched to the end and I really like 2 more things: Know your home. Never be lost without your nanny. This is important on every single note but also on the negative - you don't want to feel lost without them around. Second thing is that the conversation is assuming that all nannies are women. Yoh! There's a market out there for male domestic workers (I don't know why people never speak about "houseboys" anymore but cos that conversation died in Kenya, even "manny" seems unnacceptable) who are actually trained in housekeeping, child care, early childhood education and there are also parents out there looking for the same! Or maybe just a different perspective.

And that thing of "Don't get so attached to them, my first nanny stayed with us for one year and when she left it was so hard to move on 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣(She went for chistmas and got married🤣🤣🤣🤣). I also think a review/Appraisal and motivation or rewards with bonuses and gifts are important. They are human beings... treat them right!! It is important to treat them the way you would wish to be treated in case you were working as a nanny... or whichever job.

Very insightful. I think one can also install CCTV cameras in the sitting area, hallway, kitchen basically all common areas. If one has a bedroom dedicated to one's child, one may also install a CCTV camera there. If one lives within a private compound, install CCTV cameras on strategic points too. If the compound is shared, install a CCTV camera at the entrance. That way, the domestic staff know that the space is "monitored". Others prefer to install secret cameras which I find very tricky because they don't prevent most of the actions that lead to domestic staff being fired, arrested etc. plus I feel people should know there are cameras capturing them when they are in one's home. Unfortunately some nannies abuse the WiFi access privilege hence most employers don't give them passwords to access WiFi. The internet can be addictive and some neglect their work because of the WiFi resources. Having boundaries is key. Those whose husbands are "players" and have cheated with nannies before have a tough time managing nannies. Some husbands or male partners can be very wicked when a nanny says NO to their advances and will creat all kinds of stories so that their wives fire the nannies and hire new ones who they can easily prey on. Nanny matters should be dealt with by the woman of the house. Personally, gossiping over fences, at the gate, with neighbouring nannies is forbidden. I believe all rules should be written in the contract, including the gossiping rule. Better still have a non disclosure agreement or secrecy agreement with all your domestic staff members the same way we sign one with our employers. Nannies should eat and be satisfied the same way we eat to our satisfaction. Hunger is painful and it's sad that so many women pay their nannies peanuts and expect them to buy their own food with the little they earn. A hungry man is an angry man. Shikie and Ivy, thanks for sharing.

I raised my nephew a while back and after 3 helps leaving within a span of a month, i decided to hire them the same way i recruited people as a HR in the office. I asked for original IDs to look at then asked for a copy plus a passport photo. I drew up employment letters and stated the one month in lieu of notice clause and heard them sign it. I drew up a work schedule clearly defining daily tasks, weekly, bi-weekly and monthly tasks. I stipulated baby feeding times and the baby's food timetable. I stipulated the exact time they should be back home from off. I brought structure into an otherwise free flow system but with compassion and humanity. Sanity prevailed. I agree on trusting your gut it is how i got all the stuff a nanny stole

That one of nannies and the men in the house is best very high walls are set up. From when we were kids, us boys maintained our distance and my mom made it very clear to all parties.

Another way of uplifting and rewarding your nanny is, paying for their NHIF so they and their dependants have access to medical cover. Also, I have a nanny with toddlers so i helped her set up an education policy that will mature when her kids are going to highschool and is more than sufficient to cover fees even up to college. I have friends with older kids in school all day, they chose to empower their nannies by paying for them to learn an extra skill to earn them some side cash eg tailoring, hairdressing, pottery,knitting whatever their interest. This keeps them busy so they don't loiter in the hood learning bad behaviours. You are basically looking for ways to retain good help and reward in a sustainable manner that doesn't make them big headed. My thing is, i never correct nannies in the morning, as i am stepping out to head to work. Doesn't matter what they do, i usually just say "good day", go vent in the office and then come home and correct them when i am calmer and i can check their attitude. I've had a pal yell in the morning and then called back from the office after 30 minute ati she wants to leave come for your kids.

The way people treat their employees in Kenya especially housekeepers/nannies is disgusting. I pay my house keeper $200 USD a month for a house that I’m never at (holiday home) and I never reduce her pay. She works 2 days a week and 3 days a week when I’m there. She doesn’t work more than 5 hours, which includes a lunch break. I pay her 4 weeks annual leave, 10 sick days and paid leave during Christmas holiday/New Years. Treat people with kindness and they will respect you. Ask your employees how they are doing and if they are happy with their job. The well-being of your employees is your responsibility as an employer. Be kind and generous ❤️

It's not like we don't want to pay them more but 200USD is what graduates are paid at entry level jobs. Average wage is low, but on more leave dayd, that I agree.

This was interesting to watch...we are a family of 3 + Dog (Needs walking daily!); our toddler is 4 and high energy. We both work and live in UK with no Nanny----we thrive, Probably because the economy is set up as such there are facilities for childcare. I think key is organisation and team work! I clean, hubby cooks, child lives his best life!

love you too ladies and this was really nyc for you to talk about this coz i can relate.your points were well thought out and i have a point or a suggestion i can add...i think you shouldn't give your nanny your bedsheets to wash esp for those people who are married...coz thats where u get intimate with your man and i wouldn't want anybody washing our' juices' and also wash your towel and things like bikers i feel they are too personal for a nanny to do them.

First three minutes, I was ready with MY JUDGEMENT. Shame on me...Then the girl in stripes easily segues into the "TREAT YOUR NANNY AS A HUMAN BEING" and I wanted to give her the BIGGEST hug. It is ok to be tough. It is ok to yell if you have to if something goes awry. But one thing I know for sure is that if you treat her/him with respect. All in all, I love this. Quite informative. When I come back, I will have a nanny. Ah, the beauty of living in Kenya and afford a nanny. It seems like a lifetime ago.
