The Carrera GT has quite the widowmaker reputation - just like the original 911, which was known to call out inexperienced drivers in an explosion of oversteer. In this episode, Jason explores the origins of the CGT - and how its engine came from an ego-driven F1 flex from the company’s head of engine development proving to his boss that he could, in fact, build a Formula 1 engine. And how its chassis came from Porsche's Le Mans prototype, the LMP2000, that was cancelled so that its budget could instead be used to turn the Volkswagen Touareg into a Porsche Cayenne.
Is the Carerra GT dangerous? It’s hard to tell - all of the original road tests praised its neutral, forgiving handling. But then, Jay Leno spun one at nearly 190 mph; Walter Röhrl, who tuned the car’s suspension, is said to have crashed one at the Nürburgring. There have been other high-profile crashes, including the tragic one that killed actor Paul Walker.
Some theories think the original Michelin tires had an unusually short shelf life, but Michelin made an all-new tire for the car in 2013, and still there are reports that the car’s limit behavior is “diabolical.”
The McLaren F1, that other all-carbon 600-plus horsepower mid-engine, manual-transmission, no-driver-aid supercar, has also been accused of being difficult to manage. Elon Musk crashed his. Rowan Atkinson (Mr. Bean) crashed his twice. And there have been plenty of other reported crashes, but Porsche made twenty times as many CGTs as McLaren made F1s, so there’s far greater likelihood that we’ll hear about the Carrera GT crashes.
With (comedic) guest appearances from (fake) Hans Mezger, Horst Hachart, Herbert Ampferer, Wendelin Wiedeking, and voiceover by (fake) Arnold Schwarzenegger, we learn how the CGT really came to be. And how its clutch can survive 16,000 race starts. (Advisable only when the owner isn’t around.)

Having owned one for 15 years and had it on the track numerous times, I can say that it is an amazing car. The tires are the weak point and don't allow really pushing it as I'd like. The clutch must be let out at idle gently, or purposefully at 3,000 rpm. Best sound in the world of cars. Instant throttle response.

I agree, but the LFA uses resonance bodies to enhance the sound experience on the inside. I'm not talking about modern sound design played by the stereo btw but rather resonance chambers connected to the firewall enhancing the sound experience on the inside. The Golf V GTI did that as well, unfortunatly today manufacturers prefer using the strero system to achieve a better sound experience.

JOIHIINI rewatch the episode buddy. I think you should open your ears and listen. Where Cammisa said the CGT drove great then snap without warning spun out. Ya know LIKE THE VIPER. *facepalm*
@JOIHIINI
@JOIHIINI 3 жыл бұрын
The Gim Designer ah yes snap oversteer. You mean the problem that has always plagued mid engine vehicles forever as well? The mr2 is literally the poster boy for snap oversteer. Why don’t we just call the 911 the fast Taurus because it comes in red....like a taurus
@NXT_LVL
@NXT_LVL 3 жыл бұрын
JOIHIINI it’s called sarcasm. Like when you forget about my original point because you want to see like the cool kid. Yeah the MR2 except that didn’t come with a V10 like the Viper or the CGT. Even though the MR2 is mid but are you really going to compare a Toyota to a Porsche - pronounced correctly. But thanks for playing
@JOIHIINI
@JOIHIINI 3 жыл бұрын
The Gim Designer I feel like my first comment made it pretty clear I knew what sarcasm is, your response not so much. And considering their superior engineering and racing history I feel more comfortable comparing a Toyota to a Porsche than a dodge.

I remember years back one was parked outside a convention I was working at in the Hotels main circular driveway. Grabbed a lot of attention but the memorable part for us was to look inside and seeing the center ashtray overflowing with cigarette butts. I mean overflowing! The thing is truly a piece of functional art and to see such negligence was sad

This is my favorite car of all time. I got issue #98 of Excellence magazine (plus a subscription) for Christmas 2000. I was 14 and the Carrera GT concept was on the cover. I don't think I've ever read, re-read, and dog-eared one magazine so much in my entire life...I definitely carried it around with me for months straight.

There is no Porsche better at been a Porsche than the GT. This was the best version of the “rated R” idea of what a drivers car should be. None was better and none has been ever since. Perhaps the best car ever built by Porsche for customers.

Truly, one of the best automotive presenters. I will parrot other commenters regarding the wealth of knowledge that you present to the audience. Your videos convey, not just the knowledge, but also the magic of the cars that you are passionate about. Thank you, and please keep up the great work. P.S. didn't know it was you, but I remember laughing at your license plate on 280, while I was sitting in traffic one afternoon.
