It is the blue eye. If you look at the video on the grand bazaar you will see them for sale at many kiosks. The blue eye is thought to look out and keep away evil or bad things from happening to you, or your household. It is quite common in some countries, I'd never heard of it before going to Albania, where it exists as well to a lesser degree. In Turkiye, it is all over the place. Beliefs, superstitions, whatever it is.

Yes there are quite a few street cats. There are some dogs as well in the area we were in but they do seem to be fed by locals.

No, I would not stay long term in Istanbul. It is an interesting city to visit but it would not be for us.

Good God, no. I lived in Istanbul for four months during the pandemic and would only return for a week at most. If you go there as a tourist, keep a distance from the people and work upon the basis of the assumption that they are going to scam you or rip you off, because they usually are.

You must be alert to scams and tourist pricing. We cover how to avoid that. Only eat at locals places where prices are posted is one thing.
